The honors keep rolling on in...
Isaiah Crowell is voted SEC Fresh of the Year by the AP, Jarvis Jones is unanimously named to All-SEC First Team, and Drew Butler gets an honorable mention.
The nicest thing about this is that only one of these guys is a senior...the other two will both be back next year.
Say what you will about Crowell's attitude, but there's no doubt that the kid is talented, and this is a big award to win for him. Let's hope Keith Marshall comes in and challenges him to go out and do more next year.
Update: h/t honors go to Bard Parker, who beat me to the punch on this by about three minutes. Great minds think alike!

I’m hearing that Crowell was hurt during the announcement and may not return for the bowl game...
J/K…J/K…… that was for vineyarddawg …. ![]()
I appreciate the good-natured poke in the ribs (seriously)...
… but I really hold no malice or ill-will towards Crowell. I am happy for him that he received this honor, but my opinion of his performance vis a vis his potential has not changed.
Congratulations to him for being named Freshman of the Year. And I hope that he buckles down in the offseason and commits himself to becoming a stronger, more durable, mentally tougher running back.

Go Dawgs!
Congrats to all...
Marshall would be the best thing to happen to Crowell (in football terms).
Crowell’s whole life, he’s been handed the ball without question, for he’s always been the dominant RB. Even on an SEC team, he was the starter from Day One. Heck, now he’s named the SEC Freshman of the Year.
What Isaiah needs is a kick in the pants, and bringing in another talented back would do just that. Plus, we need more backs like Coastal Carolina needs more Dawgs.
GATA!
I couldn't agree with you more.
Assuming Keith Marshall commits to Georgia tomorrow, he’ll be on campus in January and on the field practicing this spring. At that point, what are the questions going to be from the beat writers? It won’t be “How did Isaiah look on the first day of spring ball today?”, rather, it’ll be “How did Keith Marshall look? Was he making people miss? Did he eat his eggs scrambled or over-medium?”. In my opinion, there’s no quicker way to get the attention of a prima donna running back (which our boy Zay may or may not be) than by having the spotlight turned off of him and to the next five star runningback less than a year after he stepped foot on campus.
To me (and I was talking to a co-worker about this earlier), this is the biggest travesty of losing the redshirt year. There are guys who can come in and are ready to contribute on day one. From a talent perspective, Isaiah Crowell was one of those guys (and honestly, our depth didn’t do us any favors if he weren’t). From a maturity perspective, though, the redshirt year can still be huge, and that’s why it’s a shame that it’s going to be a de facto thing of the past very soon. We’ve gotten a little spoiled by the recent success of our five star athletes as true freshmen, but we need to remember that for every Matthew Stafford, Malcolm Mitchell, A.J. Green, and Aaron Murray who didn’t need the redshirt, there are plenty of players who did, be that from a physical or mental perspective. Do you think Michael Bennett would’ve been as successful as he was this year without a redshirt year? How about Marlon Brown…it’d be nice to have his true freshman year of two catches for fifteen yards back, wouldn’t it? Football is a tough game on the body and the mind, and they both need to be right to ensure success…Crowell is halfway there, but he has some work to do on the mental maturity standpoint.

Actually (and this underscores, rather than undermines, your point), . . .
. . . Aaron Murray redshirted, as did David Greene.

Go 'Dawgs!
QBs redshirt the most (or certainly a high 5) out of the so called "skilled positions" (which is a dumb name)
due to learning a basically pro level of game calling and reads. Ball catchers and ball toters aren’t going to redshirt often if they are top picks, because they will just choose to go to another school.
Stafford was basically his own man, could throw the ball a mile and Bobo couldnt begin to coach him up much. Having Moreno and a slightly better O line didnt hurt.

Oy.
I knew that…but that’s what I get for trying to multi-task at work.

I like to say this often -
BSU’s touted D Line: Four 5th year seniors. Just saying.
And it was Podunkdawg, in fact, early in the year that said “The redshirt may be more for mental than physical reasons.” Which is a very good point.
The problem is if you are going after a top player in the nation, if you tell them they are going to redshirt, they are going to go somewhere else.

Is the tendency to redshirt
the reason we sometimes see depth issues? And is early enrollment a better solution than a redshirt?
Early enrollment is always the best
gets them a jumpstart on their credit hours, on adjusting to life in Athens, to the academic requirements they’ll have, to how we want things done, gets them on the practice fielder sooner, in the weight room sooner, etc.
Early enrollment is always a preferred option.
But then, so is redshirting. Some kids are just too good, and you’d waste a season ala Knowshon. Guys like AJ Green who just have the talent to be gone asap. Otherwise, redshirting is a great option and the preferred choice if possible. It lets them learn, get acclimated to the system, get adjusted to the speed of the game, get bigger, stronger, faster before taking the field. And, for guys who will be around through their senior year, trading their 18/19 yr old season for a 22/23 yr old season gives you a much better production in that season.

JJ easily deserves it.
I am surprised by Crowell, however, not that he was bad, but he missed a few games afterall. You could almost make Brad Wing freshman of the year to be honest. Either way, congrats to IC and JJ.

Recruiting Post
I don’t mean to be selfish here, but would someone be able to create a FanPost for our status on recruiting, and the positions that we’ve filled up or might be starting to fill for 2012? I’ve no knowledge on our recruits except for the names Theus, Marshall, and Gurley.

RIP Larry Munson. I hope there's a lot of hobnail boots for you to wear.
Macon Dawg covers recruiting pretty well come Jan, along with inputs from Mr Sanchez.
And anyone is free to create a fanpost. Marshall is only a topic right now because it looks like he will declare intent tomorrow.

Well our #1 recruit is going to declare tomorrow......
UPDATE: There are numerous reports on Monday that Clemson is making a strong push for Marshall, and is much bigger competition for UGA than most people think . Said Mansell on Monday: "All indications are that Clemson is a serious player. I felt like UGA had been the leader for a while and was the team to beat. But Clemson is definitely coming on strong, and it sounds like it will be Georgia or Clemson on Tuesday. Right now, I don’t think anybody will know for sure what Keith Marshall will do until he announces it." Also, there are unconfirmed reports that Clemson (not UGA) will get the last face-to-face meeting with Marshall on Monday.
Well if its the AJC
I’ll just go ahead and assume the opposite :-)
