It is all but official, based on talking to someone with knowledge of the schedule talks, that Georgia will not play Alabama next year. A trip to Missouri early in the season (probably Sept. 8, the second week) will replace the previously-scheduled trip to South Carolina, which will be moved to midseason (probably Oct. 5, the sixth week).
And it's not expected that much if anything will change with the rest of Georgia's original 2012 schedule. The four non-conference games are expected to stay where they were.

Seems about right...
This is what we’ve been expecting for quite some time now.
I’ll be blown away if the official schedule varies from the one in the link.
Let the “UGA doesn’t play anyone” mantra begin.
GATA!
I was thinking about starting the "Alabama doesn't play anyone" mantra...
…but to-MAY-to, to-MAH-to.

Also...
I’m tired of reading how the West is far superior to the East. I read from Mizzou blogger they are happier to be in the East, for they won’t have to play Arkansas, LSU, Alabama, etc. every season…
Did people start watching football circa 2009? Do they not know that in the 1990s Florida and UT were the dominant schools? Do they not remember the 2001-2005 period where UGA and Florida were better than Bama, Arky, etc. and at least on par with LSU?
Seriously. It’s annoying.
GATA!
What gets me...
What really gets me is when people discredit our accomplishments from 2002-2008 because we played in the east.

Especially when...
Our record against teams like Bama, Arkansas, Auburn, and LSU is solid…There’s only one team we’ve struggled to beat consistently, and we’re 3-5 in our last eight against them…
But I’m preaching to the choir.
GATA!
Before the East was considered weak
Our accomplishments were discredited because Tennessee and Florida were down.
The 984 Has Spoken!
In the early part of the decade, they said the east was the hardest division in the hardest conference.
Completely forgotten now.

Yep.
These things are cyclical. The likelihood of Florida and Tennessee being good long-term has always been higher than the likelihood of Arkansas and Auburn being good long-term; odds are, the Hogs and the Plainsmen recently have experienced atypical highs, while the Gators and the Vols recently have experienced atypical lows.

It's like anything...
where there are natural cycles involved. Alabama will probably drop off some next year. LSU could be even better, but how often does a team “exceed” expectations placed on it (see: Alabama 2010)? Florida is rebuilding, and that is something that hasn’t happened in 20 years. And if it were as easy as just signing great recruits (see: Georgia, 1990s), I believe the Gators would rebound quickly. But they won’t. Tennessee, I believe, is in the nadir of their entire history. This is an extreme that everyone saw coming as soon as Lane Kiffin’s only recruiting class blew up, and Kiffin blew town.
South Carolina has been in a definite upswing, but have they peaked? I think this depends on how Lattimore recovers from a significant knee injury, and how they adjust with the departure of Ellis Johnson who was a formidable foe.
Vandy is improved, but James Franklin is just one B1G phone call away from mediocrity. Kentucky has good bourbon whiskey and bouncey ball.

This may be short term good for us
But I’d wager it will be long term bad. We need to keep the preception that we’re at least in the ballpark of the Alabama’s and LSU’s alive, so that recruits will continue coming here. If we fall back to where South Carolina is, it’ll be a decade before we pull ourselves back up to the top tier again.
How do we do that? We play the top teams. I don’t want the schedule from hell or anything, but having Alabama on next year’s schedule was a nice challenge mid-season that would have validated a successful year with a win, and given us a barometer to see how far away we are with a loss. Now, our best games are likely against USCe and Mizzou again. Maybe Georgia Tech, if their fans are right about how great they’re going to be (see: my sarcastic face).

If we want to see how the Bulldogs measure up against Alabama or LSU, . . .
. . . we can find out by playing one of those two teams in Atlanta on December 1.

I'm with you on the concept...
but if it had been Alabama instead of Ole Miss in the 2012 schedule, we would have had a three-week gauntlet at the end of the season consisting of Florida in Jax (who knows if they’ll be any good, but they’re still Florida), Alabama in Athens, and Auburn in Auburn. Instead, replace Alabama in that previous slate with Ole Miss and it looks a lot less daunting.
We’ll have a few significant road trips (Mizzou, South Carolina, Auburn) on that schedule. If we manage to win the East, we’ll get the best of whatever the West has to offer in Atlanta. That should be more than enough for whatever we need to prove.
And if we get thumped by the West champ in Atlanta once again, well, we probably deserved to be discredited some for our weak schedule, just as we did this year (along with losing to a mid-major in a “home” game).

It's cyclical
We’ll play LSU, Arkansas, and Bama soon enough (probably in 2013). At some point, every team in the East will get Ole Miss or Miss. State. And at some point, the West schools will get Kentucky or Tennessee (zing!).

This next year is as good as any to get Alabama.
That’s quite a farm system they got down there, but they’re losing basically an entire NFL defense, plus some guy who runs the football good. I’m not saying it’d be easy, but I’d rather have them in 2012-13 than 2013-14.
I dunno
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the league cracking down on over signing helps even the playing field as far as Bama and LSU are concerned. I believe they have maybe two more years to thrive on their questionable methods before they have to deal with depth issues like everyone else. For this reason, I’m not so sure Bama in 2014 will be so scary.
