Live by the Worldwide Leader, Die by the Worldwide Leader
Craig James has made official his intention to run for the U.S. Senate . . . and, the instant the Pony ceased to be an ESPN employee, the Worldwide Leader turned on him in a heartbeat. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy, but, man, the boys in Bristol are cold-blooded. (Hat tip: Senator Blutarsky.)

You know,
I heard a lot of rumors that CRAIG JAMES KILLED 5 HOOKERS AT SMU on the internet. While I don’t think it’s true that CRAIG JAMES KILLED 5 HOOKERS AT SMU, it would seem like even a rumor like that might ruin your election pretty quickly. After all, it would be pretty bad if people associated a candidate with even a purely ridiculous internet rumor like CRAIG JAMES KILLED 5 HOOKERS AT SMU.

I'm sorry I may not be reading that right
Did you say CRAIG JAMES KILLED 5 HOOKERS AT SMU, or that it would be incorrect to believe CRAIG JAMES KILLED 5 HOOKERS AT SMU?

Try Googling Craig James.
The auto-complete will, in fact, give you “Craig James killed 5 hookers” as an option.
For the record, he did not, but it just shows you the power of Spencer Hall to start a meme.
Also for the record, there’s no need to invent ersatz wrongs done by Craig James; the SMU scandal and the Texas Tech scandal are quite enough, in my opinion.

For the record,
Craig James was not convicted of killing five hookers while at SMU.

Given their relative levels of leadership experience and political qualifications....
should Craig James win a United States Senate seat, I’m officially announcing my endorsement of Bobo for President 2012.

I will only support this if
Bobo relinquishes his role of Offensive Coordinator during his campaign.

Lord help me, I'm about to defend the WWL
Well, maybe. There’s an election rule that states (effectively, not verbatim) if a media outlet gives a declared candidate air (or print, I guess) time, that media outlet has to give the candidate’s opponents the same amount of time. This doesn’t apply to ads that have been bought, obviously.
So in effect, allowing Craig James to do the color commentary for 4 hours of bowl game – even if he doesn’t say a single word about politics – would open the door for his opponents to get that same 4 hours. I’m not sure if it would be worse for ABC: having to give up the revenue from 4 hours X the number of opponents of free air time or to hear the Lt. Gov of Texas doing color for the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl….
I can't defend the fact they kept his POS butt around.

Clearly, letting the lieutenant governor of Texas do color for the Poulan Weed Eater Bowl . . .
. . . would be worthwhile, but it’s not like Craig James was fired; he quit to pursue a career in politics, which is all well and good, but ESPN didn’t take him off the air, he took himself off the air.
What’s noteworthy to me is that, before the ink was dry on James’s resignation, the Worldwide Leader posted a story which was, frankly, icy at best and catty at worst. The hypocrisy of keeping him on the air and defending him as one of their own, then turning on him the instant he quit, is what I believe ESPN deserves criticism for doing.
