ESPN's Way Too Early 2012 SEC Heisman Contenders
Before the first snap of the 2012 season (heck, before the last snap of the 2011 season), Chris Low taps the following as his 2012 SEC Heisman Trophy Contenders: Honey Badger DGAS, Marcus Lattimore, Aaron Murray, Tyler Wilson (emphasis mine).
I've contacted Mark May for a comment, but I still don't have confirmation on whether or not Georgia plays anyone next year.

Didn't realize Tyler Wilson would be back next year
I suppose that is good for us since Ark. will likely be playing Florida.

I have heard rumors that UF would be playing at aTm
I imagine with the scheduling and Arky pushing so heavily to have their cross-divisional rival changed to Mizzou that the Razorbacks would get Mizzou on their schedule next year.

There's a myriad of reasons they want to switch cross divisional rivals to Mizzou
They think that Mizzou is a natural rival for them given the whole border war element. Just don’t mention to them that two teams have played only five times, the last two meetings being in bowl games and the last regular season meeting being in 1963. So yeah. Natural rivalry there. Which has never been played.
Sinister minds think Arkansas pushing to always play Mizzou is meant to kill the ShowMeTigers’ recruiting base in Texas. While in the Big 12, Missouri could get Texas recruits, the theory goes, because they regularly played in Texas and against Texas schools. By keeping aTm as their cross rival, Missouri can keep making that claim. One of (THE?) Arkansas’ biggest states to recruit is Texas. If Arkansas can shove Missouri out of Texas by killing the annual aTm/Mizzou series, Arkansas would then have less of a threat when trying to poach Texas recruits.

Whoops, one more reason
Some people think Arkansas just doesn’t like having to travel to SCAR every other year. Yeah. Well no one does. And aTm would like it even less. So whatev.

I project us travelling to Mizzou for 2012
I think they would want to try and keep as many games in the current rotation as possible. With six East games, we should be home for three and away for three. If the rotation stays the same, we would be the home team for Tenn, Vandy, and Florida and away for SCAR and UK. That would make Mizzou away also. Unknown which weekend though.
The 984 Has Spoken!
The AD is committed to 7 home games.
It seems all the talk has Mizzou in the East, which means we would have to play them. So, either they are coming, or we are going. We got Tech at home, so maybe that is part of us traveling.
Editor, "Dawgsports"
"The ball ain't heavy." Herschel Walker
We'll have 7 home games
Next year, Tenn, Vandy, and our rotating West opponent (I think we will keep Ole Miss) should all be in Athens. We’ll also host Buffalo, Florida Atlantic, Georgia Southern, and Georgia Tech. That puts us at 7. In 2013 though, we’ll likely only have 6 home games (four true SEC home games, two OOC home).
The 984 Has Spoken!
This make complete sense. And paves the way to Atlanta.
Next year, they are going to say “we didn’t play anybody” – I dont care. I will take 12-0 and on to Atlanta. And Auburn is no gimmie, Vandy may improve, UT can only improve, who knows about UF, and SC away next year is a BIG game. I will take Buffalo then stomping Mizzou to start for sure. Greg McGarity is a genius.

SC may move, I think a cupcake, then Mizzou would be a very good start.

Honey badger? It completely ruined what I thought was a hilarious youtube video. It’s along the lines of calling Tebow Superman. The media takes a nickname and runs with it because it’s something to talk about. I say just let the guy play. I guess what bothers me about the Honey Badger moniker is that I feel like if it weren’t for his nickname, the media wouldn’t be as in love with him. While I feel like he’s an amazing football player, I just can’t help but think that they only included him in the Heisman finalists because of the notoriety of the whole Honey Badger epidemic instead of his football abilities.

Or Aaron Murray is wearing that shirt because it was a fairly well known meme that's been around for close to a year
And fairly well known memes, especially at the height of their popularity, now tend to get co-opted by stores like Hot Topic and branded all over clothing. If anything, this shirt is just another example that the internet is leaking, same as Mathieu’s nickname.
Personally, I’m waiting for a player to revive, and subsequently steal, a Mr. T Ate My Balls nickname.

Nothing personal, LSU Jonno; I respect the kid’s talent immensely, and, while he wasn’t the difference between Louisiana State winning and losing the SEC Championship Game, he certainly provided the spark that swung the momentum decisively from one side to the other.
Aaron Murray certainly isn’t wearing a Tyrann Mathieu shirt there. The YouTube video is funny; the nickname based on the YouTube video is dumb.

"has there ever been a candid photograph of Aaron Murray that wasn't embarrassing"
Embarrassing is subjective. I actively enjoy, and not in a laughing at him manner, his goofball personality. It’s heartening to see someone care so little about what others are saying that he can just do what he wants. Unless he’s doing this all ironically; that would make him a hipster and cause me to unironically hate him.
Then again, this is coming from the guy that does wear a Three Keyboard Cat Moon shirt. And a community college shirt (albeit one for the show Community). And a free law school shirt he got from a law school he didn’t even attend. So maybe I’m not the best judge.

I believe Murray’s candidacy depends perhpas far to much on the viability of Malcom Mitchell as a true #1 receiver. Mitchell’s talent has never been in question, but we’ve yet to see that AJ Green-dependability from him. I know that’s asking a lot, but I know the kid has that kind of ability.

I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist,
but I don’t think a Georgia player will get the sort of media attention required to win a Heisman unless we literally see a Herschel Walker type player again. Call it PWG, Mark May syndrome, or plain old anti-Georgia bias, but the media (read “ESPN”) really likes to sink its teeth into who it want to win early on and not let go. Andrew Luck still got 2nd place in the voting, ahead of Richardson and Montee Ball – two much more deserving candidates for this very reason.
On a more specific note, with Aaron Murray I just don’t think he’s a flashy enough player to generate the kind of talk he would need. I hope I’m proven wrong, but Murray has a tendency to quietly lead the conference in a lot of categories and therefore goes unnoticed among certain media-types.
by Swarles_Barkley on Dec 13, 2011 1:03 AM EST up reply actions
I dunno, how flashy is Andrew Luck?
I haven’t watched a ton of Stanford games, but he just seems like he goes about his business, albeit better than just about anybody else does. I think you’re very right about the narrative becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy in a lot of cases, but let’s see AM have a truly outstanding season—on a truly outstanding team—and see if he doesn’t get some talk. And remember, he’s got two years left (potentially).
Andrew Luck completed 70% of his passes this year for 8.5 yards a toss, with 35 TDs to 9 picks, on an 11-1 team; Murray was 58.8, 7.7, 33/12 in almost the same number of attempts. If Murray’s completing 2/3 of his passes next year and we go 11-1 (which, hey, 70% completions would help…), he’s absolutely in the conversation for ‘12 and would be a strong favorite for ’13. But that’s a big if.
I guess my argument is that putting up those numbers doesn't generate talk.
It only validates preseason talk. Someone with no preseason hype has to do RGIII types of things to win. But yes, we’ll see. I’d like to see Murray get some Heisman talk this year or next. He works hard enough for it.

We do better if our players aren’t praised the whole off season. Yet, at the same time, as a fan I like seeing Georgia get its due credit for its success in the media.

Personally, I'm fine with being denied the Heisman Trophy.
It’s the most overrated award in all of sports. It rarely goes to the right player, and it’s given out before the bowl games are played. That made sense when bowl games were viewed as glorified exhibitions and didn’t count either statistically or in the determination of a national champion, but now they do. Honoring the best player of the season before the season is even over is dumb.
Beyond that, John Heisman was an offensive innovator who ran up scores and insulted his opponents after beating them. He coached at Auburn, Clemson, and Georgia Tech. Wanting to see a Georgia player win the Heisman Trophy is like wanting to see a Georgia player win the Spurrier Trophy.

Oh, I agree 100%.
We argue so much about how to find the best team in college football and whether the BCS or playoffs can do it. Yet somehow we think it’s perfectly logical to eyeball test choosing the best player in all of college football.
Teamspeedkills did a great poll a while back posting stats of QB’s and RB’s without telling you their name. It listed yards/%’s/overall records/records vs top 25 teams, among others. The results spoke volumes. RGIII ran away with the QB votes despite all the talk at the time being about Luck (at this point in the season, RGIII was just barely getting attention, but Luck was still the heavy favorite).
And that doesn’t even touch on how they neglect to consider defensive players. The only ones who come close or actually do win are ones that play on special teams and/or offensive along with their defensive role.
