Bulldogs' 3:30 Kickoff Time Raises Interesting Question for Georgia Fans
As anticipated, as DavetheDawg noted, and much to my chagrin, CBS has set a 3:30 p.m. Eastern kickoff time for next Saturday’s renewal of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Auburn Tigers.
Frankly, 3:30 was my last choice, as I believe the Bulldogs would have benefited either from a noon start (which would have begun at 11:00 a.m. body standard time for the visitors from the SEC West) or from a night game (in the hope of replicating something akin to the 2007 "blackout" game atmosphere). Nevertheless, the ‘Dawgs must play the hand they have been dealt, which creates an interesting conundrum.
At noon on Saturday, CBS will air the contest in Columbia pitting the Florida Gators against the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Palmetto State Poultry presently trail the Classic City Canines by a half-game in the SEC East standings, so a South Carolina win this weekend would require the Red and Black to win both of their remaining conference games to claim the division, while a loss by the Garnet and Black to the Orange and Blue would give the Athenians a one-game margin for error.
Given that state of affairs, which way will you be rooting on Saturday? Vote in the poll and offer your thoughts in the comments.
Go ‘Dawgs!

I also voted for UGA to TCOB, cause that’s all that matters right now – beating AU to heck.

I'm absolutely thrilled with the timeslot.
I managed to get time off, a flight and my Dad has a ticket for me. Plus, I’ll hopefully get to meet up with some of the fine folks who partake in this blog in person.
There’s no way I’m coming all the up in here to see us lose. No way.

Understood, UGAVike.
It also was the original blackout game, which could not be replicated, even if we scheduled a blackout for this weekend, which we shouldn’t. I simply believe a true night game would be more conducive to recreating that atmosphere this year. As always, reasonable Georgia fans may disagree.

Blackout...
I hoped at the time that UGA would save the Blackouts for home game’s against Auburn. It seemed like a good tradition to start after that game. Instead we got drunk with it.
I know everyone hates the alt uniforms (myself included), but I wouldn’t mind using them at home against Auburn going forward.

I like red jerseys, silver pants, fans that show up on time and loud, and shoving the ball down their throat.

Had the 2007 Auburn and 2008 Sugar Bowl blackouts been the last two times the Bulldogs wore alternate uniforms, I would be 100 per cent in favor of breaking out the blackout jerseys this weekend, but, after the 2008 Alabama game, the 2009 Florida game, and the 2011 Boise State game, I want us to stick to our regular uniforms for the foreseeable future.

deviation of our unis I want to ever see is red pants on the road. We’ve discussed this a while back, and this alternative is actually not a deviation at all. It’s part of our look and it’s what Herschel was wearing when we took down the Vols in ‘80. Plus, it’s a great look.

I wouldn't mind a Homecoming game one year throwback in the style of celebrating the 1942 team
Next year would be the 70th anniversary. It would be a fitting time to do it. So yeah, just a throwback uniform not meant as a motivational gimmick but just as a way of honoring past success.

I project our homecoming opponent to be Vandy or Georgia Southern
Vandy was our last two homecoming losses, so after this season and the boiling animosity, maybe we should avoid uniform mojo. If it’s Georgia Southern, we better not lose that game, uniform mojo be damned.
The 984 Has Spoken!
I voted for "none of the above"...
Because I want Carolina to lose (notice that I didn’t say I wanted Florida to win, because nobody with self-respect should want that). I want the Gamecocksto lose so that UGA can clinch an SEC Championship berth by 7 PM Saturday night, and so that we can plan on tinkering with a few things and getting guys healthy the next weekend against Kentucky. It would allow us to maybe sneak a peak at Tech’s offense a bit early too. I know that coaches say they never look ahead, but Kentucky is a special brand of terrible. Regardless, it’d be fun to have clenched by Saturday evening.

they always do the top CBS game
Usually at 3:30, sometimes at 8pm like last night or the UF/Bama game earlier this season. This coming weekend is a rare CBS doubleheader where they have 2 games – one at noon and one at 3:30. So a night game wasn’t really an option unless ESPN got to pick in betweem the 2 CBS selections. I really don’t know the order of selection for the doubleheader.

The fourth quarter cut in to a blacked out Sanford Stadium in the darkness crankin' dat to Soulja Boy will stay with me forever.
a) It was the Uncle Verne dancin’ scene.
b) I was there in person, and it was possibly even more awesome in person than it was to watch on TV.
c) It’s virtually the only single game (as opposed to season review DVD’s) that I still watch the replay of to this day.
The atmosphere of that fateful night in 2007 was unique and will probably never be replicated. It was incredible both for its hipness and the fact that the stadium was rocking and rolling in a way that has rarely happened from the first appearance of the black jerseys until the final whistle.

I also want the coaching staff to lock up all the players at Lake Lanier or wherever they go the night before the game. I want all electronic communication devices confiscated. I want the various score trackers in the stadium to exclude mentioning the game. I want the announcer to stay silent on it until after we win.
Basically, I want SC to lose but the players to have no clue whatsoever so that they don’t get any feeling of “Oh, well SC lost, so we don’t absolutely have to win no matter what.”

What bonehead made that decision, instead of this past weekend when they could have had a pair of top 10 matchups.

From what has been going around, CBS had to negotiate with ESPN to move the Bama/LSU game to 8:00...

Herbie is just full of crap, IMO.
He practically ran a single-man campaign to create an Ohio State/Michigan rematch (unsuccessfully) in 2006, then turned around and campaigned against Georgia making the MNC game in 2007 because “they didn’t even play in their conference championship game.”
Then, tonight, he said that pollsters shouldn’t consider external factors like “who they want” in the final BCS polls… just who the best two teams are. DUMBASS IF THEY DID THAT IN 2007 THEY WOULD HAVE VOTED FOR GEORGIA.

I have never found him knowledgable
Therefore it scares me when he predicts good things for the Dawgs. I would rather have him off the bandwagon.
It's all about the "fly in the ointment" narrative.
ESPN wants some playoff system so badly because it means money for them. Same thing every year, there is a “small” chance of a “fly in the ointment” and Tim Brando says that ( realize different network) about 100 times.
The crazy thing is the BCS system has made more money for the networks than anything else in any other sport, yet it’s not enough. Bastages.
Editor, "Dawgsports"
"The ball ain't heavy." Herschel Walker
Really?
It’s almost like you’re projecting your own feelings of wanting to have a playoff onto ESPN.
If ESPN really wanted a playoff, it would have it. They own 6 or 7 bowl games outright, TV rights to all but one of the major bowls for the next several years, and had the ability to trigger Conference Musical Chairs when they setup the Longhorn Network, pushing TX A&M into the SEC’s arms.
Any playoff would devalue the overall regular season. Would Bama/LSU have received so much hype over the weekend if they were merely fighting over playoff seeding instead of an “in-or-out” position for the Nat’l Championship??
As you can tell, I’m not a fan of the playoff system. It’s an inevitable game of dominoes, with an option to keep expanding it year after year (more wild cards, moves like the NCAA Basketball tournament considered in going from 65 to 96). A Plus-One is the only real thing that could prevent a massive devaluation of the regular season while also preventing an ever-expanding playoff format.
Uh - dude, how am I projecting my own feelings?
This “fly in the ointment?” meme gets started every year. That’s not a statement of my desires, but an observation of what I see.
If I wanted to project my own feelings, it would be very clear, not something ambiguous.
Editor, "Dawgsports"
"The ball ain't heavy." Herschel Walker
I find it interesting
I haven’t heard any of the major sports media outlets use the term “BCS busters” this season. I suspect some strange combination of (a) Boise State’s having gained a sufficient degree of respect, so an appearance in a non-championship BCS bowl just isn’t a big deal any more and (b) the general sentiment that there will be an ample number of BCS AQ teams ahead of BSU to stave off the Broncos’ appearance in the title game.
And by the way, nothing would please me more than to fulfill the “fly in the ointment” role: we’d be the last and next SEC champion not to play for the BCS Championship.
by NCT on Nov 7, 2011 8:07 AM EST via iPhone app up reply actions

might make that talk end, for at least a while

The Oklahoma – OK State game is going to be a huge season ender.
Stanford still has Oregon and ND.
So, OK beats Ok State, and Stanford loses, and UGA loses to LSU. Then it’s possible.
I would prefer UGA beat LSU of course, which would mean no SEC team in the NC.

Can't believe we are a double digit favorite.
At this juncture Auburn’s resume seems superior to ours. My since of foreboding of the Auburn game was born my freshman year (1979) when we were awful yet still had a shot at the Sugar Bowl if we could beat Auburn at home. We didn’t, they tore up the hedges and took pieces as souvenirs and I have disliked them ever since. Our recent domination had taken the edge off of that dislike until last year, now I am back to dislike and dread of the “high stakes home game” with Auburn.
No matter what time it is, we need USC to keep losing.

I agree that CSL has been an axing addition to the coaching staff and there has been serious improvement. True re anonymity of good DBs.
DEs and LBs get glory for sacks (and deservedly so), but sacks are often possible only because the DBs are doing their jobs well. It’s something one rarely gets to see on TV and takes practice to see in person.
by NCT on Nov 7, 2011 12:49 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Good point.
Saturday was a good example of it, as well. The New Mexico State quarterback frequently had what felt like a maddening amount of time to throw, but, when he did, he invariably went to his safety valve receiver, for a minimal gain. For all the visceral satisfaction of the quarterback sack (and it is a thing of beauty; there is a reason why Deacon Jones is my favorite non-Georgia football player), a three-man rush that maintains containment, backed by an effective secondary, on a play that ends in a completion for a one-yard gain is an effective defense.
Manager, Dawg Sports, SB Nation's Georgia Bulldogs weblog.
Go 'Dawgs!
It's not an easy thing to isolate the performance of any one DB....
but the Georgia pass defense as a whole has been improving pretty steadily.
Opposing teams’ passer ratings and Georgia’s related rank in efficiency defense:
2009 – 132.31 (73rd Nationally)
2010 – 121.55 (44th Nationally)
2011 – 101.96 (6th nationally)
It’s been pretty drastic since Coaches Gratham and Lakatos took over. Still a ways to go to get to Alabama territory (83.07), but hanging right with LSU (96.74). The secondary as a whole has done a lot better over the last few years and Smith has been on the field an lot. I don’t know enough to evaluate those guys individually so I’m going to just say that the unit as a whole has really improved.

Sometimes we are in a 3-4 but we have 4 guys on the line
There are the 3 linemen and an OLB either with his hand on the ground with a 9 technique (with the real DE in a 7). The other OLB is standing up like he’s going to rush or standing up off the line like he’s going into coverage. it’s still a 3-4, but it looks like we have 4 down linemen.
we’ve also played a lot of 2-4-5 nickel. we line up two down linemen, and have two OLBs in a 9 or standing up and rushing the passer. i think i’ve seen one in a 7 before, or even right over the tackle, but i haven’t paid a TON of attention to things like that. just… more than maybe i should.
may go rewatch the florida game (for many reasons), but i’ve seen us in the 3-4 and 2-4-5 nickel quite a bit. lots of 3-4 teams run the nickel like that. and since we’ve seen quite a few pass-heavy teams, that’s what we’ve been running. looks like 4 linemen, but it’s a typical nickel for the 3-4.

Now that we are in the proverbial drivers seat, we just win the rest of our games and not worry about what everybody else is doing? Crazy to me that this answer is barely winning the poll at 39%. I truly hope that a Gator win has no place in CMR’s game plan. Does the fact that a good portion of our fan base seems to be hoping for a flordia win indicate a lack of confidence in out coaching staff’s game prep? If we win out I’ll be proud of the Dawgs focus and effort after the first 2 losses. We will truly deserve a shot at teh SEC ahampionship under that scenario. Cant say i’d feel the same way if we backed into the game under the scenario of a Georgia loss to Auburn coupled with a SC loss to Florida. That is a depressing thought. See you guys at the family reunion!

Are you willing to pay to park?
Want to be in the midst of tailgating?

Yes
and not necessarily. Since it’s an early game, might stick around for a while after.

Depending on how early you get there ...
There are parking lots and decks downtown.

There’s a parking deck on the west side of College Avenue between Clayton and Washington. There’s another that takes up half the block between Hancock, Washington, Thomas, and Jackson; the vehicle entrance is on Hancock, but if you park there, exit on foot onto Washington.
There are surface lots along W Hancock and W Washington where the owners charge a fee, but those will fill up very early. There’s a surface lot behind the First Baptist Church on Pulaski Street (entrance to the lot is on Washington), and another lot a block back to the west from that one (also entered from Washington).
My preference is to park in one of the downtown decks, and I check down to the two lots behind FBC.
There is awkward but free street parking in the residential neighborhood in the blocks further west of downtown, and it’s not nearly as sketchy as it used to be. I’ve found myself parking out there from time to time over the last several years and have never run into any problems, other than the hike.
Of course, there was this one time several years ago when I parked out there and, after the game, my friend and I decided to hang out in Athens for the evening with him as the designated driver home. Before I started drinking heavily, I went and collected the car and brought it into downtown proper to save us the late-night steps. When it was time to leave, I couldn’t remember where I’d parked the car, and we had to spend quite some time walking around every downtown block to find it. It was not my proudest moment and, in fact, may have been one of my most shameful, since the chances are pretty good that “before I started drinking heavily” still was “after I’d drunk too much”.

The portion of that URL that got translated as a link will not be very useful.
Try this one. The stadium isn’t on this map, but is reached by heading south past Herty Field. You can’t miss it.

DAMMIT PROOFREADING SUCKS
The lots behind the church on Pulaski are reached from Hancock, not Washington.

Thanks
for the info, NCT. I’ll put those streets into my GPS and see where it gets us. As many times as I’ve been to Athens over the years, I’ve developed zero proficiency in navigating the area.
Yea, I might as well have been drunk in 2009. Although we remembered the name of the parking deck, no one on foot seemed to know where it was on the way back—and I was with Georgia fans.

What?
No option to have a meteor hit the stadium? How about severe weather ending it 0-0 (for you non-Armageddon types)?

I am ashamed for forgetting that option.
Mea culpa.

Who Cares?
Who cares what time the game starts? Auburn is going down no matter what time they choose to kick the ball off!
