Postgame/General College Football Game Day Open Comment Thread

The nice thing about an early kickoff is that you know the result of the Georgia Bulldogs' game by mid-afternoon, and you have the whole rest of your day to do other things, including (i) talking about the result of the Georgia Bulldogs' game, (ii) watching other college football games, and (iii) talking about those other college football games.

By all means, feel free to do (i) and (iii) in the comments below while you do (ii).

Go 'Dawgs!

So far

this “weekend” has seen Iowa State shock Okie State, Florida and Auburn struggle and Alabama giving up more points to Georgia Southern than LSU did.

I’m just glad we won, are champs and can settle in to watch Vandy whip Tennessee later. Or not.

How about the 2006 UAB game...

Where we had a shutout? We were tight this game, but that’s what happens when you are without your top three running backs. I don’t care what the score was. We’re going to the Dome and we have a puncher’s chance of going to the Sugar Bowl. At least we’re not looking bad against 1-AA teams….errr…FCS teams (see Florida, Auburn, and the mighty Bama today).

Go Dawgs!

by SoGaDawg on Nov 19, 2011 4:56 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Our Sugar hopes are weak

If we lose to LSU Alabama will probably get the nod. If there is a rematch between LSU and Alabama, we still do not go to the Sugar…2 BCS teams from the same conference rule. SO we have to DESTROY LSU and no SEC team advances to the MNCG…SOUNDS GOOD TO ME

Actually there is a clause that allows 3 teams in the BCS

if two from the same conference play for the MNC. The caveat is that they both have to be non-conference champs (which seems dumb to me). Theoretically we could beat LSU in the SECCG but have them not drop far enough to be out of the MNC game and play against Bama.

by RocketDawg on Nov 19, 2011 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

The reason we played poorly on O...

Is because we didn’t have our top running backs, Murray was off AND this was the classic trap game. Come on guys. Quit complaining and enjoy this win. Its GREAT to be a GEORGIA BULLDOG!

I know that I am talking to a brick wall here...

but the offensive performance wasn’t all on Bobo today. He had nothing to work with. Our Oline wasn’t blocking for anyone to run the ball, Harton and Malcome can’t hold on to the damn thing when they do get a hole, and Murray was off today. What would you have him do? He played conservative so as not to let UK back in the game and let the defense win it for us.

I would have utlized my TEs, FBs, outs, slants, drags, dink and dunk, wing passes

I would not throw the ball repeatedly then run play action when we had no run. I would have maybe dialed in some trickeration. I would have not run the same “jet sweep” or “toss sweep” play 3 or 4 times in a row. I would have gotten AM on the phone and provided leadership and mentorship to instill confidence.

Not sure if you saw this during the game

But UK was doing a great job of disguising coverages. They would show man and then check out of it into a 2 deep or quarters coverage. AM was reading it correctly pre-snap but not trusting what he saw post snap. They had the TE’s and the flats covered for the most part. Orson and Aron both had a couple of nice catches but were pretty much bracketed by LB’s and a Safety all day. You have to give the UK defense and DC some credit as well, they played very fast today so there weren’t a lot of opportunities for swing or screen passes to work. O line blocked horribly in the first half and a bit better in the second half.

The turnovers were key, how do you call a run play when you can’t trust your RB’s to hold on to the football?

by RocketDawg on Nov 19, 2011 6:53 PM EST up reply actions

This is where we needed Bobo to talk with AM - I saw open TEs and he locked on the deep pass numerous times.

The “GNB” also showed with 2 long passes and a draw. The GNB combined with AM’s changes in pocket presence combined with Bobo’s interviews to not lead me to believe he is an effective leader as OC. He may can out X box someone, but he doesnt strike me as a leader of young men.

FWIW, I have said multiple times now that the TOs were critical, however

UK gave up 24 to Louisville, 48 to UF, 35 to LSU, 54 to SC (I mean, SC!), 28 to MSU, 38 to VANDY.

So, although our execution was pathetic, our preparation and play calling also was. We need leadership beyond CMR. He doesnt interact with the QB nearly as much.

No doubt we would have done better with Isaiah Crowell or Carlton Thomas than without...

Going forward, like into next year, the biggest thing I hope to see is better run blocking and Crowell with a full year in a college conditioning program.

The running makes it all work (or at least makes it all work better).

No question the fumbles were tough today.

IMHO, next week is HUGE

We cannot, cannot, CANNOT, go into the SEC title game off a loss to the nerds. I’m not saying we can beat LSU if we beat the nerds, but I am saying that there’s no way we’ll have what it takes to beat LSU having lost to them.

To say nothing of the fact that it is unacceptable to lose to the nerds. Just … unacceptable. To me, most rivalries need both teams to win on a fairly balanced basis. This is the exception that proves that rule. We could beat Tech by 1,000 points for the next 1,000 years and I’d still want more.

Without knowing the full rules

I guess if the whistle was blown (which it quite clearly was), the play was dead and couldn’t be returned for a TD. So, the call on the field was obviously blown. However, with the whistle, it couldn’t be overturned to be a TD. At least, with the announcers going on about the whistle, that’s the only thing I can assume that would reasonably make Franklin mad.

Still though. A call blown that badly? Yeah. Let it be overturned. None of the Vandy players let up at the sound of the whistle.

An official? Dooley? He had bad intentions on his mind. Franklin hasn’t paid his dues enough to get the benefit, just like Muschamp. These guys just show up, say they’re SEC ready and feel like they can scream at officials with no repercussions?

I heard a whistle, but the replay clearly showed the Vol defender wasn’t down. I guess Franklin wanted to this explained…but he’s dealing with a Marc Curles crew which might be the dregs on the SEC officiating food chain. Anyway, good for Dooley. It’s about time he caught a break.

He clearly pushed one of his players out of the way. I don’t care if you’re angry, you’re the head coach; you don’t shove your players. The only time that’s appropriate, I think, is when it’s situations like Richt shoving all of his players out of the way to keep them from dancing on Vandy’s star. I know what you mean TT

I live in Louisiana and am surrounded by hoards of LSU fans, but I openly want LSU to lose ;)

I have said since week 1, and on the podcasts, what on earth does he need to do?

Does he need a sports psychologist? Is his g/f giving him a hard time? Are classes rough? Does he need a good nights sleep? I don’t know, but please fix it. He obviously has skills, but their are games it’s just ridiculous. And thanks to CMB, he lost his mobility.

I don't know that that is coachable at this point, other than giving him confidence.

He missed passes with time and no pressure today (some, not a majority). How can you be the leading TD thrower at UGA in a season with Fran T, Buck B, David G, Matt S, and not be able to complete a 5 yard pass wide open, no pressure?

It hurts my head.

Oh wow

Jimbo Fisher lesmiles’d that final drive.

And now under review

Catch likely wasn’t a catch. So they’ll get time for a game winning FG.

Okay, so that was an absurdly hilarious end

FSU needs FG to win. They’re in range. Jimbo Fisher uses his last timeout with 20 seconds left. He then tries going for more yards. An out is thrown with about 6 seconds left and is ruled a catch. Time expires. Review, after like five minutes, shows it was incomplete. FSU lines up for a FG. Movement on the line and a flag. Ref says UVA was mimicking the cadence or whatever to cause a false start. Penalty, FSU moves up five more yards or whatever. Kick goes wide left.

HILARIOUS.

I can't believe USC

fumbled that ball down there. Sometimes I think college football looks a lot like professional wrestling. You can’t script this stuff any better. Oregon is going tie this thing up

Grantham needs to drill assignment football this week. We need to start out fast and furious

against the bees. I know he can scheme for them. I just remember sitting in the stands and watching that beautiful play on the pitch man last year and Houston taking it in for the TD.

What do you want more....

1) A few more crazy upsets to put UGA in the national title game.

2) A Sugar Bowl rematch against Boise State.

Feel free to factor in which is more realistic in making your choice.

by Keltaric on Nov 20, 2011 12:08 AM EST reply actions

UGA will not be in the NC game. Rematches never happen.

BSU was #10 in the BCS before 4 teams above them lost. Assume that raises them to #6. There are also 2 teams above them scheduled to play (LSU/ARK) and 2 teams right below them scheduled to play (OK/OKst). Assuming they win out hard to imagine they are lower than 6-8 in the BCS.

Pretty hard to exclude them from a BCS bowl game at that point.

Granted the BCS doesn’t like rematches.

But this is hypothetical. Which would you prefer?

by Keltaric on Nov 20, 2011 12:36 AM EST up reply actions

I prefer to beat Tech soundly.

I’d take a win against tech over either of those 2 scenarios. Yes.

But for anyone else interested in playing the ‘what if?’ game, the question stands. :)

by Keltaric on Nov 20, 2011 12:44 AM EST up reply actions

3) Ruining Tennessee for a few years.

For anyone that wants a playoff...

please name a single day with as much fun during the regular season as today in any sport with a playoff. I can think of plenty of others in college football. The first that comes to mind is 2007 conference championship day where several teams at the top of the rankings fell. For my part I’ll take the way it is right now any day of the week.
