If It Weren't for Good Luck, We'd Have No Luck at All: Gloom, Despair, and Agony on the 'Dawgs?
Don’t look now, but things may be looking up for the Georgia Bulldogs. The BlogPoll has the Red and Black ranked, Georgia is favored over Florida on Saturday, Mark Richt’s hot seat has cooled, Mark Fox’s Hoop Hounds are getting respect from Kentucky basketball fans, and Kit just posted the best "Dawg Gone Podcast" ever. (Seriously, if you haven’t listened to "The Dawg Gone Podcast" yet, stop what you’re doing and listen to it right now. You’ll be glad you did.)
With this much positive energy extant in Bulldog Nation . . . yeah, we’re doomed, aren’t we?
Go ‘Dawgs!

Mitchell's gimpy...
So there’s that…
It’s not all good news.

Depends on who you ask though
Murray seems to think it’s just being cautious.

I know it's not original
but special teams is the great equalizer. We can dominate them in many categories and lose that and the game. That is my feeling at this point. We’ll be up 14 points and then give up a long return for a TD or close to it, then they’re back in the game. If I felt good about our special teams, I might actually feel good about this game (if I could forget about the last 20 years).. As it is, the good news is just to make me feel good going into the game, and I’m not falling for it.
I’m hoping my pessimism is enough to prepare me for our loss, and leave me surprised if we do actually win.
Well...
Richt doesn’t plan to change his usage of Walsh, which also concerns me:
"As a head coach, it really hasn’t phased me. I’m sad for him that he has struggled and maybe didn’t have the type of season statistically that he had hoped he’d have at this point. But I really do have full confidence in him. I’m not going to go into this game saying I’m not going to attempt that 52-yarder or 47-yarder. I’ll have the same mindset with him that I had in game one in regard to that. I know how hard he has prepared, and I know how good he is. When it’s your senior year and you’re wanting great things to happen and he knows it is a team sport, but he also knew he had a really good shot at some national awards at that position. Those things are not very likely now but he still wants to help Georgia win and finish strong, and I believe he will."
While this may be Richt defending his player and not an actual glimpse into his gameplan, I absolutely think attempting a 47-yard FG, would be the wrong decision in this game (unless long yardage is needed for a first down, at which point punting may make more sense).

I think Richt's right to stick with Walsh.
He’s missed a bunch this year, but I think you kick for points if it’s less than 45 yards. If it’s more, depends on how far you have to go to get the first down. That’d be my call.

Didn't we sign Bogotay
Because he had a leg which was supposed to be the solution to our directional kicking woes at the time? I heard a lot about his leg, but not about accuracy and I don’t remember him being mentioned in relation to field goal duties. I always had the impression the staff got him to shut people up about leg strength being the issue with directional kicking.
But its entirely possible that I’m remembering it wrong.

No, I recall the same...
and then we realize how stupid directional kicking is PLUS let Blair Walsh handle kickoffs. No offense to Bogotay, who probably would be a solid kicker if he was at a school that didn’t have one of the most talented kickers in the country, but that may be the worst signing Richt ever made. Again, not trying to imply anything about Bogotay, just that we basically got a backup for a position that doesn’t use backups, and because the starter was as great as he is, he’s never been used and likely never will be.

Yeah
It does seem like a waste of a scholly. Like I said… seemed to me like it was a “Hey! If we get this kid with the monster leg, people will stop asking us about the directional kicking thing” move.

Different question.
I’m saying Richt should kick field goals inside of 45 yards, and I said “stick with Walsh” because Walsh does the kicking.
As to why we signed Bogotay, you never need a backup kicker until you really need a backup kicker. There’s a reason that kickers score the most points, and I won’t fault a team for carrying two guys at that position.

Exactly.
It looks like a wasted scholarship until Blair Walsh gets his leg snapped in half by some neanderthal Auburn defensive lineman who wants to be the next Nick Fairley.

Focus the hate, vineyarddawg.
Search your feelings. Sharpen your mind to know the proper object of your hatred. Waste no time on the others. Hear the choir, starting softly but building to a terrible crescendo, say….

At which point we turn to Drew Butler, or a walk on
we’ve had some success with walk ons-Coutu, Ely-Kelso, Bennett, etc.

This is a very solid point.
Florida’s starting placekicker was injured toward the end of the Auburn game, and so they had to go for it on at least one 4th down on which they otherwise would have gone for the field goal. They failed to convert. I’m not saying that cost them the game, but it certainly didn’t help.
Oh, just FYI, UF’s kicker will be 100% for the Cocktail Party.
USA Today has UF as 1.5 point favorites
as of yesterday. Still early but I would imagine the odds are either way in most places with the spread negligible.
Isaiah Crowell for Heisman!!
Only want to see a few things on Saturday
1 The Dawgs controlling the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball
2. Murray not forcing anything, and playing smart i.e. (forced INTs or hangin onto the ball too long)
2 Crowell rushing for at least 100 yds min + no fumbles= at least 2 TDs
3. A lot of 3 and outs for UF at the hand of our defense
4. No points or big plays allowed by the special teams
Basically what we all have been clamoring for all year… 1 good, complete game, from the gents in silver britches
GATA DAWGS !!!
Actually, you can't edit comments, anyway, . . .
. . . but it’s all right, because those really are the same thing: Isaiah Crowell has to have a good game in order for the pressure to be taken off of Aaron Murray, which I agree is critical to preventing him from making the fatal mistakes he made in the 2010 Florida game, the 2010 Liberty Bowl, and the 2011 South Carolina game, without which we arguably would have won all three games.
Go 'Dawgs!
Ain't gonna be close Dawgs
too much Dawg, too little reptile. 45-23. Walsh kcks a 45 yarder, because he can and Murray lites it up with lazers.
I will root for Alabama or Ohio State if they play the Chinese...maybe.
I will root for Auburn if they play Al Qaida, Hamas or the Phillies
