And UGA VIII has cancer.
So, today, we found out that UGA VIII has lymphoma. I'm now taking this as incontrovertible proof that God hates Georgia, and will continue pour down smitings upon our program until Sanford Stadium is destroyed and torn down such that no stone is left standing upon another.
You know, Zeke Bratkowski worked with Tim Tebow to get him to a place where he could be drafted in the first round... do you think we could call in a solid on this one and get His Holiness to make a humble request upon the Almighty?
I mean, you can destroy our stadium, you can cause our football team to have losing records... but could please just stop killing our dogs?

Seriously...
Horrible news. I mean, as a breed English Bulldogs don’t have a great track record, but this seems a bit much.
Get well, Uga!
I am a fan of the Dawgs, Falcons, and Braves...oh...and tacos, but I like the other three more.
terrible news, Mike 6 and I pray you get well soon!

All right, who's gotta goat farm?
we’ve got a lotta sacrifices to be making.

It may come to that.
Is it possible there was a typographical error in the Ten Commandments? Maybe we’re committing idolatry by inadvertently violating the rule, “Thou shalt have no other dogs before Me.”

That rule was on the tablet that Moses dropped

I hate to be "That Guy", but Edgar/Maynard II wasn’t close to the best fight I’ve ever seen…

For the record, I trace the beginning of the bad stuff back to . . .
. . . the second game of the 2008 College World Series finals. If you’d like, I’m sure I could trace it back to a particular inning, and probably to a particular at-bat, but, honestly, I don’t have the heart to do it on my own initiative without some prompting.

Could I possibly persuade you to do a post tracing our current woes back to the 2008 College World Series?

I'll do what I can (although mdhenshaw appears to have done it for me).
Do you mind if I wait ‘til I’m over what I’m ill with, though? Thanks.
Man, I’ll be glad when whatever I’m fighting gets out of my system!
Go 'Dawgs!
Bottom of the 3rd - Game 2
Georgia is up 5-0 and gives up 6 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. We never lead again.
Oh BTW… 2 SEC teams have won baseball national championships after that collapse.
Wow!
I made exactly that point in the other thread: Georgia is the last team to win an SEC championship in football that did not also win a national championship on the gridiron, and Georgia is the last SEC team to reach the College World Series finals and not win the national championship.
We’re cursed.
Go 'Dawgs!
Larry Munson
Retired on September 22, 2008.
The Dawgs were 4-0 at that time. On Saturday, September 27, 2008, the Dawgs lost handily to Alabama. Nothing good has happened since.

+100000
I’ve been saying the exact same thing for a couple years now. It’s the Larry Munson Curse.
Don’t get me wrong, there had been deep-seated issues on our team (specifically the Defense) for a couple of years before his retirement… But it’s simple. Larry had PARTIALLY retired before the Bama game. He only did home games. We struggled in all of our 2007 away games and even lost at UT. without that loss, we win the NC.
Larry Munson Curse. I have no idea how we recover. Is Larry’s son doing any broadcasting?

Man
I’m not going to hate on Cox. He was a decent stopgap starter, and the offense wasn’t particularly horrible under him. He had a bad case of the INT’s, but he was decent for a guy not a lot of people expected much from. Let’s stop hating on the guy for doing his best, alright?

Wow.
The proposition that the Seiler family should be allowed to continue breeding UGAs can no longer be defended. Fire Sonny Seiler!

Seiler's heart's in the right place, and I'll think he'll get it turned around.
His breeding coordinator, though, is toast.
Get well, Uga VIII.

Fire Uga! He’s been in decline for 5 years now! There’s no way he can turn this thing around, and now there’s yet another off-the-field issue he has to deal with! I don’t see other schools dealing with lymphoma! [sidebar: cancer’s no joke, get well soon Uga.]
Hire Buster Bronco! Hire Super Frog! Hire Stanford Tree! Hell, hire the Masked Rider! They’ve all done more with their programs than Uga’s ever done with ours! They do more with less talent and Uga does less with more talent! I read all about it on the AJC!

Maybe I'm just being optimistic because I love dogs...
But is there a treatment for dog cancer? Like dog-chemo or surgery? Or do they just take him out back like Old Yeller? This really sucks. He’s just a puppy.

I couldn’t get it to pull up on my phone. Glad to hear he’s doing well.

Russ should get a title - like Chancellor or something.
and maybe, if Uga VIII isnt ever that healthy, Russ could be the full time mascot and we will have a break in the Uga’s. It would be kinda historic.

Too late.
I posted a mention of Uga’s illness on Facebook. It took 13 minutes before a Georgia Tech fan left an insulting comment (which I will not reproduce here).
I should hasten to add that they’re not all that way (I’m sure Jason Kirk will handle it tastefully at SB Nation Atlanta, for instance), but anyone who’d celebrate a pet getting sick because he doesn’t like the college loyalty of the pet owner seriously needs to reconsider his priorities.
Go 'Dawgs!
saw that on FB

Me, too. I would say it was disgusting...
… but unfortunately I’ve come to expect that from most Tech fans.
Jeez....
There wasn’t anything even infinitesimally humorous in that comment.
"If we score, we may win. If they never score, we'll never lose."

What I particularly don’t understand about that is that, while he went to GT, he also spent the last 3 years at Georgia. Even if you’re the type of person generally inclined to make such comments (a quality for which my wife came up with an interesting epithet), you’d think that those years would at least weaken the venom towards a year and a half old puppy.
I’m just glad that most non-Georgia folks on here lately seem to be the rare breed that read the blogs of other teams without being complete echidnas.
"It'll only be reviewed because the guys up in the booth want to watch it a few times too." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf16_mw0nxs
I already got a text informing me of the illness from a Tech fan
Made a derogatory Venture Bros. reference quote regarding cancer. I am not amused.
This is really sad, and it isn't the fault of anyone really.
Jman781 started it off with a correct statement, the breed just doesn’t have a great track record. And this is a bit much. At least Uga VIII will receive the best of care.

before PETA or someone weighs in on this…you know, Uga’s illness being our our fault and all.

they did start that mess about live mascots last year, right?

Science, not God or a curse
Okay, perhaps I’m going to sound like a WindyCity liberal here, but I’ve never been a fan of the strict requirements placed on Ugas, including the requirement they be all white. These requirements indicate that the Ugas we are getting are the result of the purest of purebreeding (and inbreeding) and inbred, purebred dogs have health problems. That’s the bottom line. Genetic variation in a species/breed is a good thing for the survivability of a species and I think we should embrace at least a little variation here.
There’s always been something somewhat disturbing to me about a breed of dog so artificially purebred that 95% of the time the breed cannot give birth naturally. This is not a criticism of the mascot, nor of the Seilers — I love both the Uga tradition and have heard nothing but amazing things about the Seilers. However, I do think some changes are in order in terms of the requirements we place on our beloved Uga, especially in light of the rough patch we’re going through.
Good points, WindyCityDawg.
If you look at pictures of all eight Ugas arrayed sequentially, you can see how much larger the dogs have become in succession. As you say, the results speak for themselves: after years of mascots with substantial longevity, we have had a string of short-lived Ugas.
I agree that a little variety can only help. Just as we did better by looking outside the program to hire Todd Grantham than we did by promoting Willie Martinez from within, we should add some fresh blood (in this case, literally rather than metaphorically) to the Uga line. I suspect most of us wouldn’t mind an Uga who spent ten good years on the Sanford Stadium sideline just because he happened to have a brown spot somewhere upon his person canine.
Also, I’m glad to hear it’s not my fault.

I'm not disagreeing the with "fresh blood" argument...
… but I would also like to point out that UGA VIII has a prominent brown spot on his right ear, so that’s at least one tradition that was quietly broken.

that's Russ but Uga VIII wasnt as pure white. And I was under the impression with Uga VIII that they had tried to get other blood lines in.
"One thing I will never do as long as I’m at Georgia is lose to Florida." - Herschel Walker
I don't think the brown spots are real.
I think it’s like the fake brown spot Krypto the Superdog put on his back when in his secret identity as Skippy, the Kent family dog, which he burned off with his heat vision before donning his cape and going off to fight animal crime in Smallville.
Go 'Dawgs!
I'm glad someone said it.

Don't Hate Me...
I was born and raised in TN, but I live in TN now. Because of this, I don’t get to come to as many games as I’d like.
The past 2 games my wife and I have been to were the inaugural games for both UGA VII and UGA VIII.
I promise I will not go back to the next game that an UGA will be crowned as our glorious mascot.
Get well UGA.
