Georgia inside linebacker Marcus Dowtin will transfer to another school.
Dowtin, a junior from Upper Marlboro, Md., has been granted an unconditional release from his scholarship, UGA said Tuesday without further comment.
Reports surfaced last week that Dowtin had faced a second-degree assault charge stemming from a Maryland bar fight last May. The case was resolved in December, but Georgia coach Mark Richt did not learn of the incident until last week.
Dowtin, who appeared in 11 games and started two this past season, didn’t play in the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31 because of what was described a coach’s decision unrelated to the Maryland matter. He was Georgia’s fourth leading tackler for the season with 57.
I for one hope this is a case of Coach Richt saying "You can transfer, or be booted". He needs to be tough this year, the players need to know if they cross the line, they're gone. Time to up the discipline, and for the leaders on the team to start cracking heads if someone thinks about getting out of line.
