New Year's Day College Football Game Day Open Comment Thread
Happy new year! By the time this posting appears, I will be in transit from Memphis to Atlanta, but the show must go on, and, even though the Bulldogs' season ended with a thud in the Liberty Bowl, college football season continues for another few days. Today is the traditional day for major bowl games in Division I-A, and 2011 dawns with the SEC owning an 0-3 mark in postseason play. Personally, I'm at the point where I want the conference to go 0-10 in bowl games so all of us can be miserable, but we shall see how the day progresses.
If you're not too hung-over, jet-lagged, or ticked off to take part, dive in and share your thoughts on the day's gridiron action.
Go 'Dawgs!

I was trying to watch the Rose Bowl
But Bielema just called a fake punt from their own 40 and picked up the first down…. then I got pissed off all over again. The 2010 Georgia Bulldogs football season/coaching/program/what-have-you has officially made it impossible for me to enjoy watching college football. This sucks.
I’m gonna go drink a six pack and watch Breaking Bad.

I had to work today...
which is fine by me. I’ve got no desire to watch anymore football this season. In fact, I’m glad Oprah has started her own Network. She’s looking for new talent, and since I can’t seem to get a better weather gig, I’m thinking about starting The Dave The Dawg Show. The focus will be on college football fans who care too much, and the people who love them. I predict big things. Dr. Phil can Suck It.
However, the Sun will shine again…sooner or later. I’m not about to suggest next year “we’ll turn it around”, but believe me: we are not the only ones who gives a damn about our Dawgs. Better days are ahead. When? That’s unknown.
And I’m off butter until things change.

I watched MSU beat the snot out of Michigan - I laughed. I cried.

Not So Big Ten
So Wisconsin loses to TCU, giving the Big Ten one of the worst single days of intersectional football ever. Ah, blessed schadenfreude!

And the Big 10 goes 0-4 today,
0-3 against the SEC and 0-1 against non-AQs. I would laugh, but then I would be a hyp…aw, screw it. BWAHAHAHAHA!
I forgot about Northwestern,
but I’m surely not the only one to ever make that mistake.

Is it just me...
… or did this thread not show up at 8:00 AM like the timestamp says? I swear I didn’t see this thread until just now when I visited the site.
which is why i was bs'n on the open mic thread

My bad, people.
I have no idea why that was the case. I was at the airport when this thread was scheduled to appear, and, other than signing on briefly to post on Facebook that I was home, I didn’t even turn on the computer yesterday. This is the first time I’ve checked the site since Friday night.
Once again, I apologize for whatever mishap occurred. 2011, apparently, is not off to an auspicious start. Sigh.
Go 'Dawgs!
If UCONN can win - I will believe in football again. Maybe.

My
Razorbacks will bring the wood Tuesday. Worst 10 soon to be 0-6 for bowls and 0-10 against the SEC.
Stay Classy San Diego.
iowa and illinois
Both notched victories against mizzou and baylor, I think

Thanks for the correction, jumping_jack_flash.
I hadn’t checked, and I wasn’t sure what the league’s record was overall. Do we get to count Nebraska’s loss against the Big Ten’s record now, too?
Ron, I hope you’re right. I’m sick of listening to the Big Ten, and an Ohio State win over an SEC team in a bowl game would be trumpeted disproportionately by everyone in the Midwest.
Go 'Dawgs!
I have to say this:
I am SO GLAD that Bielema lost! I cannot stand guys who run up the score (ala Evil Genius) and I am glad that the SEC rebounded after beginning the bowl season 0-3.
I LOVE the fact that the chick interviewing Urban after the UF game said, “we’ll see you soon.” -Good clue that no one is buying what he’s selling now. LET’S GO HUSKIES!
I don't think "we'll see you soon" meant "we'll see you back in coaching."
I think it meant “we’ll see you in Bristol when you’re officially announced as ESPN’s newest college football talking head.”
Go 'Dawgs!
TCU
Looked very well prepared today. This was my first time watching either team – wisconsins John clay runs like he is a wrecking ball. I would hate to have to tackle that guy.

Sure, today proved the upper echelon SEC programs are better than their counterparts in the Big 10, but where does that leave us? I guess we’ll find out if/when we get out of the loser’s bracket . I set aside my letdown over the Dawgs’ loss and pulled for the Badgers today in their loss. Had to do it: My buddy, a native Cheesehead and lifelong Badgerian, donned a Georgia hat for me and brought along two tourists from Japan to help fill my four seats in the UGA rooting section at the Liberty Bowl. The Tokyo residents didn’t speak much English, but they caught on quickly to cheering for our guys at appropriate times, however few those moments might have been.
Did Wisconsin lose because of the bad karma they created by putting lopsided whuppins on a couple hapless patsies in the regular season? I doubt it. TCU was just better on both side of the ball. Lakepoets might want to consider that running up scores seems more offensive when it’s someone else’s team or conference doing so. A beat-down’s okay, but just not too much of a beat-down, and not if Urban Meyer or Darth Visor are delivering it.. Check the ALA-Mich. State and Miss. St.-Mich. games today. I hope Hawgs beat Buckeyes in equally convincing fashion. But if you ask me where I stand on running up the score, I’m against it. It’s morally wrong and repugnant to all people of good will.
I admire your principles, memphisdawg, . . .
. . . but I agree with Lakepoets: Bret Bielema is the most obnoxious Division I-A college head football coach not named Lane Kiffin. Try watching the guy smirk and smarm his way through an interview and I promise you you’ll have to resist the urge to throw something through the television. I don’t care for running up the score, but Tom Osborne did it, too, and I didn’t dislike him for that; I dislike Bret Bielema because he comes across as a complete tool, partly through word and partly through deed (e.g., going for two when up by umpteen, then blaming it on “the card”; taking advantage of a loophole in the rules by having his guys repeatedly deliberately line up offsides on a kickoff to avoid having to give the ball back before halftime).
Go 'Dawgs!
Yes I agree in principle
with both of you guys. TKK, Bielema has left a bad taste with me ever since the Minnesota game. I selfishly enjoyed seeing his team outplayed by what I believe to be the most fundamentally sound team (top to bottom) in pads currently. While I do not always “cheer for the conference” I did take some pride in seeing the SEC well represented on New Year’s Day and I hope to see UGA join the party very soon. Also, hats off to Jimbo Fisher. Not bad for a first year head coach.
GO DAWGS!
I wish ESPN would give Mississippi a little credit already - MIchigan went to a big bowl afterall - State beat the tar out of them.

My sources in the Big10 tell me...
…in addition to a new logo and divisions, the Big10 has created a new slogan. “The Big 10: We are what they thought we were.”
Really would like to see our guys ...
… playing with the heart, fire, and fun that TCU showed against Wisconsin.
It's a gas, gas, gas.
TCU also had a ton of confidence.
When was the last time we saw our guys play that way? Was it “The Blackout” in ’07 against Auburn? The Sugar Bowl against Hawaii?
Maybe it was @ Tech last season? Otherwise, I really can’t think of a game since the ‘07 season where we took the field with a swagger and, for lack of a better word, fun since. We’ve had heart at times, a bit of fire here ‘n there, maybe a little fun now and then. But it’s been a long time since we’ve seen all of that in a game that mattered for 60 full minutes. Am I wrong?

Definitely Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl
Also the last time we were a legitimate Top 5 team. Coincidence?

Dave, I agree
at the same time, I wonder. I wonder if Coach Richt has already been attempting the “Urban Meyer let coaches coach” approach to the team. It seems like perhaps he’s been a little detached from the coaching part of the game and maybe that has come around to bite him. I just don’t think the guy has lost it, at least not the Xs and Os of it and I still believe he can coach kids up and design great game plans. I just think he’s turned over too much responsibility and it’s hurt. Maybe that’s the change for next year. Maybe he takes over more of the coaching of the guys and designing the offense and game planning. If he does, I think we will see significant improvement. If not, well, then I guess we will have more of the same.
Although the only game I go to watch this season was a loss,
Go Falcons!
