A. J. Green suspended for four games

Per Kyle, NCAA has suspended A. J. Green for four games.  First game back will be Colorado on October 2.  More to follow when Kyle gets back to his computer.  He actually found out about this while in downtown Atlanta pursuing his day job.

I might throw up.

This better be a sick joke. How does Marcell Dareus get off with a 2 game suspension after receiving more than $2000 in improper benefits but AJ gets 4 games for selling a jersey for less than $1000??? I’m going to try and not destroy my office furniture until I receive confirmation on this.

Brutal

If this is, in fact, true, it’s a brutal consequence. I smell a rat though. Chambers of the Supreme Court? If that’s the case, I don’t think TKK would want you revealing this source.

For what it's worth, . . .

. . . that’s where I was when I received word. I tried calling MaconDawg first, and, when I couldn’t get him, I called College Buddy, who typed it while I was on the phone with him. Any criticisms are applicable to me, not to him.

No criticism

I just thought this meant that perhaps Justice Carley pulled you aside between oral arguments. It was actually a funny picture in my head — thus it seemed relatively implausible. Makes more sense that you got the call while at the court.

Thanks.

Your question was a fair one; I just wanted to clarify it. Had I had fifteen minutes and access to the internet, the story would have been clearer from the get-go, but I didn’t want other folks taking the fall for my ambiguity (or my subsequent attempt to clear up that ambiguity).

No worries here

You beat ESPN and AJC by about 5-10 minutes, and it turned out to be true so I don’t understand why people are up in arms about it..

According to AJC and Mcgarity, they’re appealing the length of the suspension. Any chance that that will be upheld, and timeframe? Are they going to take several weeks to review and rule or is that something that they have a turnaround time on of several days?

by andycapps on Sep 8, 2010 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

My source tells me that the University will appeal the length of the suspension.

The prospects for getting it shortened didn’t sound good to me, based on what my source said, but it’s not impossible.

This is my opinion, and is not based on anything my source said, but I don’t see any way it’s shortened in time for the South Carolina game.

As I figured

It doesn’t sound like it would affect his status for SCAR, regardless. It does seem very harsh to mete out a 4 game suspension, maybe UGA’s lawyers can make an effective enough case. This definitely sets a pretty harsh precedent for future suspensions regarding agent contact.

It is definitely time for Durham and Tavarres King to step up Saturday. Need a big game from Ealey and C. King as well to take pressure off Murray and the receivers. Then need the OL to really step up and make those holes for the RB’s and provide good protection for Murray. I would imagine SCAR’s game plan will be to stack the box to stop the run and force Murray to make throws.

Sounds like he was doing his day job...

… which might have included being in and around the Supreme Court, and got a text or a call with the news. Remember, he knows Green’s family.

Of course, this also sounds like blind speculation on my part.

by vineyarddawg on Sep 8, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

That's a fair point, WindCityDawg.

The sequence was this: I was there when I received word, but I couldn’t do anything with it because of where I was. My main point in mentioning it was to demonstrate why I didn’t get the word out sooner, but that didn’t come through because my mind was running a mile a minute and I was dictating on a cell phone.

When I got outside the building, I called MaconDawg, who was out of pocket. I then called College Buddy, to whom I relayed the information. He basically typed what I dictated; he read it to me before posting it, and I approved it. When I later got through to MaconDawg to ask him to promote the post to the front page, MaconDawg wisely suggested that I might not want to include such extraneous information relating to my day job, which only could have confused the issue (which, obviously, it did). At his suggestion, but at my instruction, MaconDawg redacted that information.

Where I was when the source contacted me ultimately wasn’t germane, but my mind was on other things at the time, and my point (e.g., why I didn’t break the story sooner) did not get through as I intended. This was my fault; College Buddy and MaconDawg were helping me out, but the decisions (and, therefore, the mistakes) were mine. I apologize for creating confusion when what I really was trying to do was break news based on a good source.

A report on georgiascout.com by Dean Legge exclaims that Green will play this Saturday.

Right now, I don’t know who to believe. One says Green will play. The other says that he is suspended 4 games. This whole NCAA conundrum is all about bureaucracy. No wonder nothing got done during the past month. If Green had done something extremely wrong, they would’ve known about it first and declared something right away instead of having this drag on and on and on.

A story this big I would normally think Kyle would post himself, and do so after lots of validation. Him or MD. This seems out of character for the blog in general – but anything is possible. Remember, we just heard abou the jersey and waiting to be cleared. 4 games doesnt make sense on what we know.

Sorry about all the confusion and delay.

For the record, if y’all will take up a collection and pay me what I make practicing law, I’ll be happy to do this full-time! :)

Seriously, I’m sorry for the way this went down, and for the confusion it created. College Buddy is a longtime friend I know I can trust. If you hear from him that he’s heard from me, it means I can’t get to a computer and my first call (to MaconDawg) didn’t get through (for the record, because MaconDawg also has professional responsibilities, which he was fulfilling).

It was good information, just bad timing. Oh, and bad news, too, of course, but we’ll get to that later.

by blackertai on Sep 8, 2010 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions

No wonder UGA's got lawyers on this

This is a travesty! What are they thinking?

Last year, they punished Dez Bryant for being untruthful and generally a scum-bag-like character in his dealings with the NCAA during questioning. This year, they’ve got a rash of players in contact with agents (allegedly), and they’ve already cost some of the players involved a game if they were innocent. Now, we find out after over a month of speculation that AJ Green’s indiscretion was to sell a game-worn jersey to a fan. That fan turned out to be connected to an agent (possibly), which seems to have been unknown to AJ at the time. AJ has already repaid the money to charity (according to reports), and has been completely truthful with the NCAA the entire time (again, according to reports).

How, then, does the NCAA justify sitting him 4 games when they only fined Darius at Alabama 2 games for what most people are calling deliberate agent contact. Green didn’t know he was selling to a runner, AFAIK, and he’s been truthful the entire time. Why punish him so severely? This makes no sense. I feel like I’m reading the first reports about Mettenberger being kicked off the team all over again. There has to be SOMETHING more to this story to justify 4 games. The NCAA can’t be this malicious in it’s prosecution.

by Gamecockrock on Sep 8, 2010 5:03 PM EDT reply actions

Every indication is that he has been truthful the whole time.

Mark Schlabach’s report emphasized that Green had been fully forthcoming with the NCAA. His initial unqualified statement that he not only didn’t go to the party, but had never even been to Miami, has never been refuted. He’s never gotten into any legal trouble, and I’ve seen nothing to indicate that he’s ever been untruthful. We know from Mark Richt’s punishment of Zach Mettenberger that he treats it as a very big deal when a player lies to him, so Coach Richt’s demeanor on the whole thing suggests that he believes A.J. Nothing seems to indicate any dishonesty on A.J.’s part; even the sale of the jersey to someone connected with an agent appears to have been innocuous (the connection with the agent, I mean; the sale, obviously, was deliberate).

Seems to me, but I'm no NCAA insider, attorney, or anything like that

but there has to be something more. I can’t imagine the NCAA handing down such a harsh punishment for simply selling a uni especially when the comments were about how forthcoming AJ was and how he was working with the investigators and how he had already repaid the money. It doesn’t make sense, not even by NCAA standards.

by EricBDawg on Sep 8, 2010 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know if it was considered. . .

But remember that the groundbreaking case on this issue was the sale, en masse, of 2003 SEC Championship rings by several Georgia players (Kedric Golston and Fred Gibson spring to mind). I could see the NCAA saying “Your compliance staff assured us that they now educate you guys about that. So we know that you knew it was wrong.”

by MaconDawg on Sep 8, 2010 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

But surely

other compliance staffs assured the NCAA that they would educate players regarding taking trips paid for by agents to clients of said agents homes and partying with client and agent.

And surely, other compliance staffs have assured the NCAA that they have spoken with their players about how stealing is wrong, using illegal drugs is wrong, putting anyone in the hospital by using your fists on them is wrong, etc. etc. etc….
