1. It’s nice watching a game between two teams that evoke such pleasant memories for me from the last time the Bulldogs played them both.

I don’t have a problem with Boise State. The Broncos are what Alabama was in the early ‘20s, what Georgia was in the late ’20s, what Arizona State was in the late ’60s, what Florida State was in the early ’70s, what Miami was in the late ’70s, etc. They’re just the latest step in the history of college football.

That was a HIT by Boise on that kickoff.
They sure didn’t bring that kind of hitting in 2005 to Athens.
This isn't the same program it was then.
Confusing Boise State 2005 with Boise State 2010 is like confusing Florida 2004 with Florida 2009.

Why the disdain for Boise State?
With Virginia Tech, Oregon State, and Fresno State on their schedule, the Broncos play a three-game slate . . . just like Texas, Southern Cal, and Ohio State during most of their national championship game runs.

I think it is more about the preseason polls.
It’s unfair for any team to start #3 with a weak schedule and manage to eat a bunch of cupcakes on the way to a 3 game season and a possible NC bid.
And I wouldn’t put Fresno State on a pedestal just yet, but we’ll have to look back after the season to tell. Without looking at any of the schedules, I’d guess that Texas/USC/OSU played really bad to middle of the pack bad teams while Boise just looks to be scraping the bottom of the barrell.
And just like that...
… Boise up by 10.
Nice way to quiet that VT crowd down pretty quickly.
My guess is they’ve still got to get about 30-35 points to win, though.

Boise is playing the part of a team that can kick the ball to the back of the endzone, and Va. Tech is playing the part of a team that has Jon Fabris as its Special Teams coach.

Teams that did what they were expected to do are going to stay put or move only incrementally. Pending the outcome of tonight’s game, of course, Alabama, Ohio State, and Nebraska will keep their same rankings.
Teams like Oregon and South Carolina, who exceeded expectations, are likely to rise. Teams like Florida, Iowa, Texas, Oklahoma, and Auburn, which failed to impress, will drop.
Pitt, North Carolina, LSU, Washington, Clemson, and Southern Miss will drop out of my top 25.
Georgia, BYU, and Utah will make it into my top 25. Florida State, Oklahoma State, Fresno State, and Arkansas will receive consideration.
My decision not to rank USC or Wisconsin was completely justified.

After Week 1, it’s still mostly guesswork, anyway. Hard to fault anybody for pretty much anything, unless you rank Ole Miss or Kansas.
TCU got a good win over an Oregon State team that looks good (which is to say, better than mediocre, but not great).

I don’t think TCU is as good as people think, but I think Oregon State is better than everyone gives them credit for this year.
USC is a fraud and will get exposed. I agree with the teams that will drop lower and drop out.
I guess you can't move up Southern Cal, though I guess I would've had 'em in my preseason Top 25.
I’m guessing you’re not considering adding Oregon State to the Top 25 coming after a loss (unless you had them ranked already).
Oregon State is a pretty good team and my darkhorse for the Pac10, for what its worth. TCU around #15 right now would be fair to me.

My BBQ place messed up my order this past Saturday. For future games where I’m home do I need to order what they gave me, order what I originally wanted, or order what I want and hope they give me the wrong order again?
I'm weird about that kind of thing.
I go to unusual lengths to get exactly what I ordered. (With the exception of steak, that is… if you send back a steak, it’s gettin’ spit on.)
I would have gone back and told them I didn’t get what I ordered and asked for them to make it right. I even do that when going through drive-throughs. I could get all the way home and see something wrong, and I’ll get out and go back just to get what I originally ordered.
Well, that was an entertaining first half.
Some first-game-of-the-season mistakes, but there’s been some give and take both ways… it’ll be a pleasant surprise if the second half is this entertaining, too.

I think it was a bit of both
Jones and Glenn missed substantial practice time one with knee surgery and the other with mono. I think it might take a few games to get them in a rhythm. Hopefully they shore it up during practice this week.

I am somewhat intrigued though that a man like Urban Meyer (who is about the biggest anal retentive control freak I can imagine) would have those issues in the first place. I know everyone is poo-pooing them as no big deal, but if I’d told someone that would happen to an Urban Meyer coached team a couple weeks before the season, they would’ve looked at me like I was crazy.

I realize we’ve piled on Willie quite a bit the last few days and some of it’s good comedic relief, but overall he’s a really good guy. His players loved him and would run through a wall from him (at least that’s what my friends on the football team told me), but he was just in over his head. I hope he does well in Norman, but hope he stays far away from the sidelines in Athens.

I miss the hell out of Larry. Scott Howard does a great job, don’t get me wrong. But it makes me sad…like missing my Grandaddy…when I listen to any of Larry’s calls. It’s just not the same. I mean, I’d flip my stuff to get the radio tuned in to 106.1 in time to hear “Alright, get the picture…” THAT was when the game officially started for me.
We were spoiled with Larry for a long time.
Gotta love the announcer that says exactly what should be said. There will never be another in any sport.

Personally, I'm now pulling for VPI to run the table and win the ACC.
I’m much more interested in delegitimizing the ACC than I am in delegitimizing mid-majors.

That was a badly coached end to that game. Why is Tyrod Taylor airing the ball out every play when they basically need 25 yards for a shot? Also, perhaps when you run a 4.4. 40 and they’re rushing 3 guys, maybe run for the first down?

Sorry, I went to bed without announcing it after the game last night...
… but if nobody else starts the thread, I’d be glad to.
2nd to last drive:
- Refs fail to call illegal block in the back. Bogus. That’s 30+ yards right there.
- The "late hit"… Um, the receiver was dancing in and out of bounds and nobody was blowing the damn whistle. Look at the reply: the guy had already stepped out of bounds once and gone back in, and the refs just let it. These late hit calls when WRs are toying with the sideline are BS. How the heck is a player supposed to pull up when they have no idea when the receiver is actually going to step out.
Final drive:
- Total pass interference on the last play.

Other thoughts:
- WOW am I glad we didn’t get Bud Foster. His defense was really nothing special. It looked like a classic Willie Martinez defense. If your front 4 don’t manage to deliver all the pressure, the opponents QB has a lifetime to find a receiver. It works fine if you have a dominant front 4, but if the OL stops them at all, its near automatic first downs.
- This whole situation illustrates even more why there has to be a playoff. Across college football, the variance in strength of schedule is just way too huge for someone to potentially cruise to the title game having only played 1 (or sometimes no) hard games.
USC for most of its run played against an abysmally inept Pac 10.
The ACC is a joke and has been for many years.
Boise State plays nobody. Va Tech will probably lose 2-3 more games this season, and this "big win" will eventually be regarded properly as a "decent win" only.
The Big 10 has one, maybe two good teams (OSU and Iowa). Whoever comes out of that conference will have played 1 or 0 hard games.
Basically the Big 12 and the SEC are the only conferences right now where most of the teams play 3+ tough games per year. So they reach the post season beat up and worn out compared to everyone else. And yet the SEC still wins 6 of the last 7 titles (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009… yes, Auburn is the 2004 champ if you’re behing honest).
The only way to remedy this is an 8, or at least 4 team playoff. Then at least everyone has to win 2 or 3 "real games" at the end to get a title.
