I am writing to enthusiastically recommend William Gregory McGarity ("Greg") to the position of Athletic Director at the University of Georgia. I have known Greg since childhood, as he and I went to school together in Athens.

First and foremost, although he has spent the last 18 years at the University of Florida, Greg is indeed a bulldog. From 1973-1992, Greg worked his way up from a student assistant to the facilities and event management for the UGA Athletic Association. . . . Unfortunately for the Dawgs, the University of Florida recognized his talent and hard work ethic and he was off to Gainesville in the summer of 1992.

Greg has excelled at UF during his time there. As much as you and I hate to admit it, Florida is an athletic powerhouse. I believe Greg has a lot to do with the teams’ success. . . .

. . . Greg’s 37 years of work at two of the strongest athletic associations in the country make him the best candidate for the AD job. He has learned what it takes to run the entire department; whether it be managing events, searching for coaches, scheduling, or managing the budget, he knows and has executed it all. He is ready to get back to his hometown and to serve his alma mater in this distinguished position. I hope you will give him the fullest consideration possible.

Congressman Jack Kingston, a great American.

NCT, don't hold it against him that he's a Republican . . . or that he split an infinitive. :)

At least he didn't say he was enthused.

There are some back-formations I simply will not accept.

I kind of like Kingston, party affiliation notwithstanding. I don’t agree with everything he does, but he’s definitely a personable fellow, judging by his appearances on Maher’s show and elsewhere. And I’d never question his Bulldog credentials.

Also, NCT, don't hold it against him...

… that he’s an alumnus of “my” literary society.

Hey, I'm literary-society neutral.

Perhaps I should have participated, but I did not. I had a few friends who were Demosthenians, and Phi Kappa had not yet been reestablished when I was in school. (The first floor of its hall was a computer lab (in those days, little if anything more than a place to go print papers from floppy discs that were actually floppy). The Student Association (and other things I can’t talk about — rumors of rumors, perhaps) held meetings upstairs.) But, try is I might have, I couldn’t do it all.

I don't know McGarity

But looking at resume, background and ties to UGA, he’s a no-brainer. I’m not sure why they’re conducting a search.

I am writing to enthusiastically recommend Mr. Georgia Football Returns to the position of Athletic Director at the University of Georgia. As Athletic Director I would 1) immediately fire Coach Mark Richt. 2) Set a policy that no coach could suggest 10 wins or 10 win average is acceptable in a 14 game season. 3) Set a policy that would eliminate any chance of a head coach becoming a “Figurehead” like Bowden or Paterno and pocket large sums on the Dawg Nation’s cash riding in a powerchair. 4) Set performance metrics for the new Head Coach which includes Championships Plural within the terms of the contract. 5) Immediately and actively pursue applications from Kirby Smart , Will Muschamp and Brian Van Gorder. 6) Give Mark Richt his own powerchair to be like Bowden. 7) Immediately direct the Richt Apologists to leave and go to the Mark Richt Shrine Website at www.markricht.com. 8)Tell President Adams that if he didn’t cooperate that he too would be next. 9)Tell Siler in Savannah that if he can’t do a better job of producing a “meaner UGA” on time, then we will begin the search for another supplier!

Sincerely yours,

Mr. Georgia Football Returns

I hope that's satire, Habanero.

Otherwise, you lost me at “14 game season.” The Bulldogs played eleven-game regular seasons in three of Mark Richt’s first nine years as head coach (2001, 2004, and 2005) and twelve-game regular seasons in the other six seasons. The only way Georgia can play a fourteen-game season is if the ’Dawgs attend the SEC championship game and a bowl game. Anyone who quarrels with ten-win seasons in which Georgia at least wins the Eastern Division is someone with whom it is beyond my capacity to reason.

I’m pretty sure this comment was satire, though, because no one would seriously suggest offering Brian VanGorder a college head coaching job, given his last two stints in the NCAA ranks (at Georgia Southern and at South Carolina). I am grateful to Coach VanGorder for the job he did as defensive coordinator, but his career choices since he left Athens have been Quincy Carter-like in their foolhardiness.

For what it's worth, by the way, . . .

. . . the only fourteen-game seasons in Georgia history came in 2002 and 2003, when the Bulldogs went 13-1 and 11-3, respectively. Accordingly, Mark Richt averages twelve wins per year in fourteen-game seasons. Also, a comparison of Mark Richt’s record to Harry Mehre’s, Wally Butts’s, and Vince Dooley’s records reveals that, on average, Mark Richt is winning more games in the longer regular season, but he isn’t losing more games.

Once again, Habanero, I’m pretty sure you’re mocking the fans who find Mark Richt’s record lacking, but, lest the wacky BuLLdawg wing of the message board crowd gain a toehold among sensible Georgia fans, I wanted to make it clear that this position is a joke, irrespective of whether it was intended that way.
