What if Lindsay Scott hadn't scored against UF in 1980
Just caught the end of a segment on College Football Live on ESPN 2 where they were doing a "What if" discussion. This particular one was "What if Boise State hadn't beat Oklahoma". Won't really discuss it because I didn't catch any of the discussion and it isn't as important as the "What if" for next week..."What if Lindsay Scott hadn't scored against Florida in 1980?"
I don't know how deep these discussions go, and I haven't ever really thought about this "What if" scenario because I don't believe we should question God's will. I don't have much of an idea on what they'll talk about. I imagine it has to be more than "They would have lost the game." It seems they talk about the long-term effects on a program/conference or even the sport itself.
I'd like to hear any ideas from those of you that were lucky enough to be alive at the time. Quick idea popped in my head - maybe Herschel stays all four years?
Anyway, I don't get a chance to watch College Football Live that often, but it looks like it comes on at 8 PM Eastern, so it might be worth a watch for yall. I'll be watching, setting a reminder in my phone. I'd also like to take this time to apologize for jinxing the UGA/Florida game last year. I proclaimed on here that we would definitely win. Sorry yall, I'm a cursed sports fan. Maybe I'll grow a beard this year.

The whole thing is
about 5 minutes of hypothetical suppostion. Nothing really deep, might discuss it a bit with a local beat writer. You won’t miss a lot if you miss it, but it should still be interesting. Not sure when the first CF “Live” comes on for the day, but it’s on ESPNU starting early in the morning and continuing until around 10 I think, then replayed again later in the afternoon.
Now, on to the what ifs:
Maybe Herschel does stay. More likely, down the road, Herschel isn’t traded from the Cowboys to the Vikings for the entire team, or whatever the ridiculous trade was. Vince Dooley doesn’t win a National Championship in 80 (or 81 if you want to look at it that way), Buck Belue is little known today, Lindsay Scott isn’t a revered name in the Dawg Nation, there’s very litlte property damage done in St. Simons and all those places, and the steel chair is still being used by radio play by play guys.
alternate history
Lindsey Scott leaves the team after
crazed fans offer to ship him back
to Jesup the hard way. Herschel
decides to leave earlier, because
he knows that Carnie Norris will
be spelling him more often. Buck
Belue throws five picks in the Cotton
Bowl, and we all go home to nurse
the sick headaches we had since that
day in Jacksonville. Larry Munson then
decides to take that less stressful job
at the post office. Happy Howard vanishes,
and there are sightings in Eatonton.
Loren Smith then utters those fateful,
life-changing words: “Larry, I got nothin’.”

Here's another interesting one....
WHAT IF Herschel had signed with Clemson instead of UGA??
Clemson already finished 12-0 and won the 1981 national title without Herschel. I think with him, they might have won 3 straight.
Similar question for my crew would be WHAT IF Tebow had signed with Alabama?
The Tide fared pretty well without him, but I think they win 2 titles with him.
Better yet
Is Mike Shula still the HC at Alabama if Tebow signed with them?

What would have happened to UF?
Would Florida have lost another game in 2006 and condemned us to a UM-tOSU rematch in the 2006 title game? Would Brantley have started as a true freshman? Would Aaron Murry have gone to Florida instead? Does Florida win it all in 2008 without him?
Leaving insightful football commentary and analysis to other people since 2006.
If Florida had lost another game in 2006 . . .
. . . would it have been to South Carolina, against whom the Gators needed multiple blocked kicks to get the win?
If that had been the game the Saurians lost, would Urban Meyer (who then would have been 0-2 against Steve Spurrier) have entered 2007 on the hot seat as a Mountain West coach who was promoted beyond his competence?
If that had been the case, would defensive lapses leading to four embarrassing losses in 2007 (including high-scoring defeats at the hands of the Bulldogs and the Wolverines) have led to Corch Meyers being fired after three seasons a la Ron Zook?
If that had been the case, who would have taken over as Florida’s head coach in 2008?
Go 'Dawgs!
Then Dooley
would have been sacked by the end of the 1984 season after 6 consecutive mediocre/losing seasons. I have no idea who would have been coach after that, but maybe Ray Goff never comes back at the end of the decade.

Somebody on FTRS caught one of those about the 1990 season.
“What if Colorado hadn’t gotten their famous Fifth Down?”
It ended up with 9-3 Notre Dame winning the National Championship. Huh?
