Around SBN: Where Do The Lakers Go From Here?

Six schools being invited by Pac-10 - TX, A&M, Tech, OU, Ok State and Colo - expected to accept invitations, begin play in Pac-16 in 2012.

Chip Brown breaks the latest news, while Fox Sports reports that Nebraska will accept an invitation to join the Big Ten.

My aforementioned posting---which has already been written and is set to appear shortly after midnight---may already be out of date, but my point still stands, so we'll forge ahead.

I'll admit I'm starting to get concerned

My initial take on the Pac-10’s move was Mike Slive was outmaneuvered. I still feel that way. If 16 team conferences are the wave of the future, the Big 12 South was home to most of the logical SEC targets who would both fit in SEC culture, and expand the geographic footprint.

The best school out there now is UNC, and they are not about to leave the ACC. Like Texas, the Heels are used to being THE decision maker in their conference. In the SEC, they would rate even lower than Texas, as the sources of UNC influence (basketball and history) would not help them in the SEC.

I don’t see any other candidates who are logical fits and would bring more money to the conference than they would remove with their revenue share.

Really?

The ACC gets the money it does because of FSU and Miami. They wouldn’t be A1A additions to the SEC, but they’re eyeball teams, and would bring a good value to the SEC. As for 2 more teams to make 16, we’ve got plenty of reasonable choices that are within the footprint, or logical extensions. Add UVA and VaTech and you’ve got a real “southern” conference, or ask UNC and NCState, and you’re good. Getting either Virginia (with DC) or North Carolina would be a great get in the long run. Either is doable.

I would love

to see UNC, NC State, UVa, and VT. I just don’t see them leaving the ACC. VT probably would, but they won’t be given the option to go alone because of Virginia politics.

Really?

I mean, their choice is to play in the SEC championship game in Atlanta, or in the rotating apparition-filled game they call a championship. Plus, there are plenty of affinities between the state legislatures. Why would UVA and Tech be kept out by their governments, when we do still offer more money (even if it’s not MUCH more).

You think so?

I mean, it seems to me that VT really likes the ACC. They’re always the consensus favorite to win the conference title in football (at least, after the annual preseason hype for FSU dies), have improved basketball tremendously in the ACC, and everyone else in their neighborhood is there. They’d been trying to get into the ACC for decades, and now that they are, I don’t see them leaving any time soon unless the ACC seems doomed (which it’s not, because the NC and VA schools won’t go anywhere unless the ACC is doomed, and with those six, it’s got enough to be decent even if everyone else bolted; they’d grumble a lot if they had to take ECU and a few Big East leftovers to survive, but they could do it).
