Women's College World Series Open Comment Thread (Game Three): Georgia Bulldogs v. Florida Gators
The big news around the blogosphere today was, of course, Blogs With Balls 3, the sports bloggers convention held in Chicago. I spent more of my day than I would care to admit tracking the event on Twitter, which is where I learned who was on Twitter and how I found out that Spencer Hall got iced. You could even watch the event on television.
Here in Bulldog Nation, though, our televisions are tuned in to the Women's College World Series. The Georgia Bulldogs' first two games have generated a pair of quality comment threads, and I expect tonight will be no exception. (Well, you know, except for the fact that it will be the Red and Black's third evening game in as many nights, and I am worn out from staying up to the very end of both of the first two, and I have a busy day ahead of me tomorrow, what with church and helping my sister-in-law and her family move, but, really, that is neither here nor there.)
Come one, come all, to root on the Bulldogs as they attempt to advance through the loser's bracket and remain alive in the NCAA softball tournament. Join in the conversation in the comments below.

Nice job in the top of the first for the Dawgs.
Now we just need to get something going at the plate early. Take the Gators out of it.
I hate Florida.
Poor coaching vs UCLA
I am appalled that the Georgia coaches could not tell their players how to adjust against the pitcher for UCLA, FOUL BALL,FOUL BALL, FOUL BALL. and to think they get paid to coach
very upsetting in my mind

oh good...i showed up and there was no gamethread
i was a little bummed
but all is good now
Once a Dawg, Always a Dawg. How Sweet it is!
You can thank vineyarddawg for that.
I checked my DirecTV program guide, and it said “Hawaii v. TBD” at 7:00 and “Georgia v. TBD” at 9:30, so I set the comment thread to pop up at 9:00.
I guess it has something to do with that business with reversing the brackets, but, until I saw vineyarddawg’s fanpost, I didn’t know the game was underway.
Totally my bad . . . although, in my defense, I’ve been up way late the last two nights.
Go 'Dawgs!
excused
i didnt even show up yesterday…then again i get a free pass there, i was fired yesterday for no reason(literally, they didnt give me a reason since ga is an “at will” state) its been a rough weekend
ga beating florida would make it much better tho

Dawgs on the board!

Florida delenda est! (Sorry, Kyle)
Not a problem.
The Gators, too, must be destroyed, and, at the moment, the need for their destruction is more immediate.
Go 'Dawgs!
Yeah...

I don't like to think it...
… but it looks like it’s worse than that. She landed really awkwardly on that leg, and they didn’t even let her try to put weight on it.
Good sportsmanship by the Gators, though.
Oh yeah...
I just meant that even in the best case scenario she’d likely be out for a tournment of this length.

I hate to say it about a Gator . . .
. . . but you’re right. That was a classy gesture by the Florida coach.

Surprisingly, yes.
The Huskies lost to Arizona today. So we’re the only canines left in the tournament.

True . . .
. . . but I like the decision to go with Owen at the outset. Two scoreless innings is a lot better than we’ve gotten from our starter in the Series so far.

Well I just showed up

Here’s the recipe for the best brownies you’ve ever eaten (besides podunkdawg’s of course), and it’s from Georgia alumnus Alton Brown, no less.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything.
Bill Gates has spoken at college graduations, and he never received a college degree. Many famous actors and actresses didn’t graduate, too, but get invites to speak at schools.
The Athens Banner-Herald says he received his drama degree in 2004.
I was pretty sure he didn't finish before becoming famous.

It occurs to me, oneloyaldawg . . .
. . . that, in the game one comment thread, when you mentioned Gordo, I may have written something gender-specific like “a fellow has to have his priorities.”
Mea culpa for the erroneous (if implicit) assumption. I certainly would never intentionally levy the ultimate insult against a woman by mistaking her for a man, even on the internet. Truly my bad.

Wonder if we're going to get some of those illegal pitch calls
The Florida pitcher’s foot sure is slidin’ a good bit.
This is the same pitcher that got something like 400 illegal pitch calls against UCLA.
Ok, maybe it wasn’t 400… but it was enough to rattle her and get them to take her out very early.
I'd prefer it if we could keep scoring.
Two runs isn’t going to be enough to win this game.
Go 'Dawgs!
I don't watch a lot of softball
I don’t watch any softball, really, except for last year’s and this year’s postseasons. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to batters running at the ball when they swing.
It's too girly.
If baseball players did that, fights would break out every inning. They’re already a third of the way to the mound by the end of the pitch.
that might be fun

Come-from-ahead loss?
I don’t care if I have to cause a rupture in the fabric of space-time itself, stop time, travel to OKC, dress like a girl, get into a softball uniform, and pose as Alisa Goler to win the game myself…
We are not losing to Florida on this day.
I hate Florida.
I'm with you . . .
. . . which is why I’m doing my part.
You know as well as I do that, the minute I begin to believe, all will be lost.
If I remain completely pessimistic at all times and tankertoad stays locked in a lead-lined room with no access to television, radio, or internet, we have a chance.
Go 'Dawgs!
I'm, um, only assuming tankertoad is locked in a lead-lined room.
I am, however, able to account for my whereabouts at all times today, including the time at which tankertoad allegedly went missing. Assuming, of course, he did. Which I by no means assume.
Go 'Dawgs!
True.
I hate Florida too much to concede defeat, though I am still as pessimistic as possible during the game.
That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it…
… right up until the third out in the bottom of the 7th inning (if you know what I mean).

I really liked this Landon Donovan SportsCenter "yellow/red card" commercial...
… the first 35 times they showed it. It was very clever. Now, it’s just getting a little old.
I like the contrast in our pitching staff.
Owen is always upbeat, Arevalo is always focused and intense, both convey confidence in entirely different ways.
Also, neither of them looks creepy like that spooky-looking Ivy Renfroe.

What is up with the baserunning errors tonight?
I agree with the announcer, that had to be a squeeze/hit-and-run, but still… all of these errors at third are costly.
It's my wife's fault that we didn't get more.
After Wiggins scored, my wife said, “I don’t want to jinx it by saying something positive . . .” and I interrupted her to say, “Then don’t.”
Then the runner on third was picked off. I said, “See? Don’t express positive thoughts, and, if possible, don’t even think them.”
Then the batter popped up, and my wife said, “I’m going downstairs.” I said, “Stay there.”
I’ll apologize later, but, damn it, this is Georgia playing Florida.

As long as tankertoad doesn’t turn on a television, radio, or computer, of course. Then we’re totally screwed.

… must conclude that we’re going to lose again tomorrow to the Vols, but I’m going to have a celebratory beer on this one tonight.
(Did I mention how I feel about Florida?)
This switched bracket thing is confusing me...
… I’ve only got a business degree after all.
Georgia will be playing UCLA tomorrow, not Tennessee. Of course, this increases our chances of losing to 100%, since the Bruins will be pushed to victory by the memory, and possibly supernatural intervention, of John Wooden.
I choose to believe that UCLA will throw both games...

I appreciate the positive attitude of samxrm and oneloyaldawg. I appreciate the pessimism of tankertoad and RedCrake. I appreciate the cognitive dissonance of vineyarddawg, which turned out to be right this evening.

Glad to do my part.
Sometimes, it’s a team effort… glad to be able to help tonight.
Just to add a little more cognitive dissonance, I really hope that Georgia advances to the WCWS final to play Hawai’i, and then loses horribly in two straight games, thereby breaking the bad mojo Georgia athletics has been under ever since the Dawgs did the football equivalent of beating up the poor little kid that lives at the end of the street in the 2008 Sugar Bowl.
Although vineyarddawg already noted this above . . .
. . . it bears repeating that, according to the bracket, we play UCLA at 1:00 tomorrow, then again tomorrow night if we win the first game.
As I mentioned in the main posting, I’m helping family move tomorrow, so I won’t be here for the comment thread for the afternoon game, and I may miss part of the nightcap if that proves to be necessary.
Carry on without me, and, as always . . . go ’Dawgs!
