Women's College World Series Open Comment Thread (Game One): Georgia Bulldogs v. Washington Huskies
First things first: I have absolutely no idea whether the Pac-10 really intends to invite six Big 12 teams to join the league. I am quite certain, though, that one current Pac-10 team (Washington) will be sending its softball team into action against the Georgia Bulldogs in the Women's College World Series tonight.
I previewed this evening's game earlier today, so, once you get home from your Zumba class, you should be fully prepared to settle in, turn on ESPN2, cheer on the Red and Black, and join in the conversation in the comments below.

I have no quarrel with that whatsoever.
By the way, for those of you scoring at home (or even if you’re alone), Tennessee leads Arizona 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning. We’re not yet at the point of the Wildcats getting run-ruled, so it could be a while.

The game just went final.
Tennessee run-rules Arizona 9-0 in five frames.
Georgia-Washington up next. Winner faces the Lady Vols in the second round.

Um...I'm watching the Ump the screwed Galarraga over here.

Ah, thanks.
I feel for Joyce. Too bad Selig wouldn’t help the poor guy out.
I’m also feeling quite a bit of remorse, myself, for dropping Galarraga from my keeper’s league team last year.

I agree, Feathered Warrior.
Jim Joyce made an honest mistake on a bang-bang play, admitted his error, and displayed heartfelt remorse.
Bud Selig is a gutless tool whose only correct decision (halting a meaningless exhibition game during extra innings to avoid the risk of injury) was followed by an idiotic overcorrection in response to a senseless backlash (allowing the all-star game to determine home field advantage for the World Series).

Nice Start for UGA bats
Although they didn’t get any hits, they made a lot of contact with 0 K’s. I’m used to seeing Lawrie blow hitters away. A nice start on their part.

Don’t worry, I have to go to work in a bit.
Thanks for the kind words T
Fun fact: I went to high school with Heather Tarr….she was a year ahead of me. I didn’t know her at all.
There was no such thing as fast pitch softball around here back in the early 90’s….so I have no idea how she went from playing slo-pitch in high school to being all-Pac-10 in a span of like 3 years.

3-0 already.
We might get run-ruled here, folks.
If we do, at least we won’t have to play Tennessee tomorrow night!

Not a good start for the Bulldogs.
Georgia came a little unglued in the first.
Coming back from an early three-run deficit against this team is going to be tough.

Our freshman pitcher Bailey was a bit lackluster in her starts this year. We supposedly have good incoming freshmen pitcher from Portland, OR for next year.

Well, the picture fit there, but to be honest...
… I’ve always thought it was just a cheap gimmick designed to make a mediocre band look special. They might call themselves “TBDBITL” (The Best Damn Band In The Land), but they’re not close to the size of the Redcoats, and it’s an all-brass band! The more full sound of the Redcoats in unbeatable.

Wow... that was the most useless explanation I've ever heard offered by someone not named Loran.
“Well, you see, some hitters like to just focus on hitting the inside or the outside. Georgia, however, splits the ball into quadrants. (Player x), for example, looks for quadrant 1 and 3… so she’s trying to hit the inside of the ball.”
So, in other words, you just explained that Georgia’s different because they do it just like everybody else, but in a completely different way.

This is completely random...
… but since we don’t have tie game to talk about or anything…
When Mrs. Vineyarddawg and I went to the super regional in Athens, one of the things that struck me most was the small size of the women’s softball field. It’s amazing how much smaller it is than a baseball field… it makes me think of Little League.
Nothing against the softball teams, mind you, but in Athens the wall in center field is at 220 feet, and the alleys are 150! That’s barely more than half the size of a baseball diamond. It takes some getting used to.

Don't tell that to our players
Those girls are some of the most physically intimidating folks you’ll ever run into.

like they do in baseball?

They do.
The home-plate official working on Friday of the super regional was virtually OCD about sweeping home plate. The ump on Saturday was much more tolerating of the amount of dirt on home plate, however.
I think they always swept it between innings, and apparently just whenever they felt like it otherwise.

At least the counting
of balls & strikes is the same.

This has absolutely nothing to do with anything . . .
. . . but my niece graduated from high school last Friday night, and we celebrated her achievement at a family get-together at my house on Memorial Day. My brother-in-law brought a double-decker chocolate chip cookie cake with icing and filling. They left the remains of it here afterward, and I just ate a piece of it a few minutes ago. I am now officially bone-tired and on a sugar high.
Did we win or lose the basketball game last year during which I was on a milkshake-induced sugar high in the comment thread?
Go 'Dawgs!
Oblig.

Congrats on your niece’s graduation, though!

If we make it through
I may have to take off work next week…they’ll kill me, but…..

Bases loaded, two outs.
Go-ahead run at the plate.
This is very likely your ballgame, right here.
Go 'Dawgs!
Wow, there are apparently enough fans in the stands to do the "Georgia... Bulldogs" cheer.
I had no idea Georgia softball fans traveled that well.
I feel kinda bad
about not being there……
"Never refuse to do a kindness unless the act would work great injury to yourself, and never refuse to take a drink- under any circumstances." Mark Twain
plus, we have fans all over
they may not have to travel to be there
this is the one chance for our okc fans to see our dawgs live
Once a Dawg, Always a Dawg. How Sweet it is!
not sure why we pulled our pitcher
she seemed to be doing fine
and from what i understand, softball pitchers arent under pitch count kinda outings
Once a Dawg, Always a Dawg. How Sweet it is!
That's always struck me as odd, too.
They seem to have no trouble making consecutive starts on back-to-back days.
I know the pitching motion is different, but I’d still think there was some torque and some wear-and-tear on the arms.
Go 'Dawgs!
even moreso i would think
with all that rotation
rotater(sp?) cuff anyone?
Once a Dawg, Always a Dawg. How Sweet it is!
my dogdawg is used to me yelling at sports
she barely even looks up anymore
Once a Dawg, Always a Dawg. How Sweet it is!
We just need to get three outs before giving up three runs.
In the meantime, I’m pretty sure we’ve gone over 200 comments in a softball thread.
And that’s another Bulldog point of pride!
Go 'Dawgs!
not bad considering out opponent doesnt even have a gamethread...and they are defending champs
Once a Dawg, Always a Dawg. How Sweet it is!
And to top it all off, you can still be pessimistic and abandon all hope if we win.
For we can win this battle, and still yet lose the war. Didn’t we play these same Huskies 3 times last year… winning once?
I don't even have to go that far back.
Didn’t Tennessee eliminate us from the SEC tournament?
And doesn’t the winner of this game face Tennessee?
Well, O.K., then.
Go 'Dawgs!
Ya gotta support the team

Forgive my ignorance but...
we do play 9 innings in softball?
"Never refuse to do a kindness unless the act would work great injury to yourself, and never refuse to take a drink- under any circumstances." Mark Twain
so this is it...
one last inning to go…and thanks for telling me you googled, i don’t feel so alone in my obvious ignorance of the sport.

and my best friend played softball for like 10 years. so dont feel bad

I just found out this year . . .
. . . from covering a couple of softball games for the blog.
It really makes a box score look weird.
Go 'Dawgs!
Oooooooooooo
if we win tonight, we play Tenn tomorrow night, I might have to drive over to the big city and watch in person like….
"Never refuse to do a kindness unless the act would work great injury to yourself, and never refuse to take a drink- under any circumstances." Mark Twain
Since I live outside Tulsa,
it’s only about a 2 hr drive to OKC for me….I’ll just have to decide what to watch from home and what to go see.
"Never refuse to do a kindness unless the act would work great injury to yourself, and never refuse to take a drink- under any circumstances." Mark Twain
Speaking of Tulsa . . .
. . . it just occurred to me that tankertoad hasn’t commented in a while.
Maybe he left, and our luck turned around when he went.
Maybe tankertoad’s been the problem all along.
Totally surprised.
Go 'Dawgs!
do you mean
toad-ally surprised?
Yeah I know, LAME joke….but it was there.
"Never refuse to do a kindness unless the act would work great injury to yourself, and never refuse to take a drink- under any circumstances." Mark Twain
Here we go.
Headed to the bottom of the seventh up by three.
Come on, ’Dawgs. Get three outs before you give up three runs.
Go 'Dawgs!
I think i heard
the announcers say we operate pitching by committee (kinda like our running back by committee philosophy.)
"Never refuse to do a kindness unless the act would work great injury to yourself, and never refuse to take a drink- under any circumstances." Mark Twain
Anything is a committee approach compared to what Washington does. Last year Danielle Laurie was the only pitcher they had to step into the circle from the month of April until the end of the WCWS.

. . . you’re going to owe me a box of brownies.

fair enough....

Pretty impressive
the Pac-10 always dominates the WCWS to the extent that (I think) Michigan may be the only team east of the Mississippi to ever win the championship.

Thanks a bunch, everyone.
This has been a lot of fun. Let’s keep the good times rolling through the weekend.
I’m now eating Cheez-Its to cut this sugar rush, then I’m going to bed.
See y’all tomorrow night, everyone . . . well, everyone except tankertoad, that is. If he shows up, he’s banned! (Not really, but the dude’s bad luck.)
Go 'Dawgs!
Guess I'm going to have to
look into where this stadium is, and possibly tickets for some part of this series…..

From a UW perspective
UGA played exceptionally well and soundly beat us.
I am just a casual softball fan; here are some random thoughts:
1. I was actually concerned after the top of the 1st; even though UGA didn’t get a hit, they were making solid contact. I’m so used to Lawrie make the opposing team to flail helplessly, pitch after pitch. If they kept that up all night, enough batted balls would translate into hits, and hits into runs. Of course, the ultimate outcome was much better than that as the UGA gals progressively started to get more solid contact/line drives.
2. Our offense is better than what was displayed tonight, but is not as good as UGA. UW is capable of scoring 6+ runs in any given game, against solid pitching. Husky batters need to try something different to get more productive outcomes (I don’t know what that would be).
3. Not to diminish the hitting talent of your team (because without talent, you have nothing but luck), but whatever preparation and game plan the coaching staff and players put together was top notch. The up-and-down the lineup hitting was impressive and was a more dominating performance than the Oklahoma, 5-hr outing against Lawrie last week.
4. Harris-Champer pulling McCloud and Arevalo when she did was just plain smart, smart decision making.
5. Lawrie has a history of blowout losses (which are very infrequent) immediately followed with total domination. Gawd, I hope that trend continues.
It was a fun game to watch, even though we lost. If there is another UW-UGA matchup this WCWS, I hope your ’dawgs fall on their faces. :)
I’m so glad I found this blog to read/post live during the game. It was really enjoyable.
Go Huskies!
Classy.
Great to have you as part of the dialogue, allcomers.
The Huskies certainly fought hard and well. It’s hard to tell how both of the teams stack up to the rest of the WCWS field, however, because most of the games earlier in the day were inordinately affected by the (apparently sudden) crackdown on the illegal pitch call. It seemed to single-handedly unhinge the Gators earlier in the day (boo-freakin’-hoo), and Tennessee’s game against Arizona was colored by 3 illegal pitch calls against the first batter, and 8 overall against the Wildcats in the game. (Both Florida and Arizona ultimately got mercy-ruled in their games against UCLA and Tennessee, respectively.)
Commend the coaching staffs of both U-Dub and Georgia, though, for obviously discussing this with their pitchers. I don’t recall an illegal pitch being called once in this game.
