Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Torn Between Two Rivals

The College World Series game between the Clemson Tigers and the South Carolina Gamecocks is underway, and I am torn. Obviously, the Fort Hill Felines and the Palmetto State Poultry are rivals of one another, but they also are rivals of the Georgia Bulldogs.

On the one hand, I brought the Gamecocks good luck last night. On the other hand, I said I'd support the Country Gentlemen in Omaha (which I have, so far). On the one hand, I don't want an ACC team breaking that conference's title drought. On the other hand, I don't want an SEC team other than the Classic City Canines winning the national championship, either.

You know what? I'm just going to hope for a good game . . . and then root for the UCLA Bruins or the TCU Horned Frogs in the finals.

For those so inclined, the comment threads are here and here. Please represent the Red and Black faithful well if you pay either side a visit.

Go 'Dawgs!

That's harsh, Kyle. You can't root against us if we make the final series.

I would be rooting for you guys if you were in our place, and I hate Georgia as much as the next guy.

Not that I don't understand your reasoning. :-)

And I certainly agree that it would be a shame to see the ACC break the drought.

It's nothing personal, and I certainly could live with y'all winning it . . .

. . . a lot more than I could live with Florida winning it. (With the Gators, it certainly would be personal.)

I like the fact that Georgia and LSU are the only SEC teams to have won the College World Series, just as I like the fact that Georgia and Alabama are the only SEC teams to have won the NCAA gymnastics championship.

I’ll put it this way: if South Carolina wins the College World Series this year, I’ll be rooting for the Gamecocks the next time they make the finals (assuming they aren’t playing Georgia, of course), because, then, it will only add to South Carolina’s total rather than allow the ’Cocks to make an unprecedented breakthrough.

That, to me, is the difference; had Georgia beaten Fresno State in 2008, Georgia still would have been one of only two SEC teams to have won a College World Series, which wouldn’t have changed anything in the grand scheme of things. Consequently, LSU winning it all in Omaha doesn’t bother me at all. For the same reason, Florida’s 1996 national championship in football bothered me far, far more than the Gators’ 2006 and 2008 national championships.

TCU or UCLA winning stuff, though? That costs me nothing.

All that said, though, good luck this evening, and congratulations on your season so far. Win or lose, y’all certainly have a lot to feel good about in 2010, which is more than I can say for certain SEC East rivals of yours.

Yeah, it's official.

I have absolutely nothing against UCLA, and I’m grateful to the Bruins for denying Alabama and Florida the national championship in gymnastics when the Gym Dogs fell apart.

I’ll be rooting for the Bruins to win it all in Omaha.

Fair enough.

I can understand where you’re coming from. Well, actually, I can’t, because the Gamecocks don’t know what it’s like to be in the shoes of the team with a championship history, but I can see your position. Hopefully we’ll just get it over with, make you swallow the pill, and you can root for us next time we play in the finals.

For the record

I predict a third SEC team will win the gymnastics national title next season….we were very young this season and it showed in the finals, but our 2 top gymnasts were both freshmen.

Also for the record, I always pull for SEC teams against OOC opponents.

Go Cocks!!

I usually root for SEC teams against non-SEC opponents...

… unless that team’s name begins with “Flor” and ends with “ida.”

Have I mentioned how I feel about Florida?
