Around SBN: Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant's Post-Game 5 Outfits

Save the Date - October 2nd

The run-off poll results are in with October 2nd receing a solid 65% of the vote vs. 35% of the vote October 30th received.  Apparently a large majority of Dawgsports readers have a great deal of concern about whether or not they can behave appropriately in public when Georgia is playing Florida.  Sadly not all readers expect to join us in person, but of course we have mobile commenting!

Now on to the 2nd phase of our party planning - where oh where shall we meet?

Star-divide

Here's the criteria in order of importance (at least in my opinion):

1.  In/Around Athens

2.  Big televisions airing the game

3.  Enough room for a whole big bunch of us

4.  Alcohol allowed - either BYO or available for purchase

5.   Food allowed - available for purchase is good, but they must be willing to let us BYO or we won't be having any Triple Chocolate Gooey Cake or brownies.  Seems BBQ is the favorite of the food options, and I do love me some BBQ

6.  It would be awful nice if it were a family friendly sort of place where those who have 'em still at home can feel free to bring children.

Feel free to add to/reorganize the criteria list.  So folks, where shall we go?

Just an idea. I won’t be hurt if we don’t do it there, but I think it covers all the criteria pretty well. I know it covers 1-4. I’m sure they’d be fine with 5, but we’d obviously need to check. I’m not too sure about 6, so someone who has been there more recently than I have would have to comment on family-friendliness.

most places wouldnt care if a large group brought in a cake or something - i doubt that is an issue

bring your own booz is illegal in most places – although there are the rare spots that have that (the one that game to mind was actually in West Point, MS).

Food, booze and TVs are all critical. Places like Buffalo WIld wings come to mind, but that isnt really athens. ’

It is likely to be a quiet weekend in Athens with the team traveling so far – I would think there would be several good places….need a scout in Athens. And what about numbers? 10-20 folks?

I'll be there,

not sure if there will be any additionals or not.

by EricBDawg on Jun 12, 2010 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Totally agree....

on all counts. We definitely need a scout, I’ve got some contacts out there but not a whole lot that are reasonably close to Athens. We’ll need a headcount. For now I’m thinking if most of the regulars show up with spouses/significant others we’ll need room for 20 – 30. Perhaps that will be the subject of a poll.

RSVP

Actually, a Facebook “event” would be a handy way to tally participants. Or even an evite.

by NCT on Jun 12, 2010 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

That's a great suggestion, NCT.

Thanks for thinking of it . . . and thanks, podunkdawg, for taking the lead in arranging this. I’m looking forward to it.

I had thought about both

a FB event and the Evites – but I do not have contact info for folks in the group. We’ve got some options there, we’ll just have to figure that part out. But I’ll happily take the lead on getting all that done.

Knowing most folks by their screen names complicates matters . . .

. . . but, if you set up a Facebook group and posted the link here, everyone should be able to follow through and join to indicate attendance, right?

Obviously, the SB Nation privacy policy prevents me from sharing real names, contact information, etc., with someone else, but I am able to access that information, so I could e-mail folks individually, though that seems by far the less efficient way of going about it, and not everyone may find that method welcome. (That was some interesting grammar there.)

We could but,

it would then be a public event and that makes it more difficult to keep out the riff-raff.

I put it on the other thread....

But I don’t use Facebook. I used to but once my mother learned how to use it I was getting 3-4 calls a night asking if I’d seen what she posted on my wall. So I got out.

This is me RSVP’ing – Unless of course I am the riff raff to which you were referring.

I'm pretty sure

Cali and Tito’s is the only place in Athens that’ll let you bring your own booze (and even then just beer and you have to pay a fee). Plus they have tiny Tube TV’s.

I hate that its a chain, but the only place I can think of that would meet all the requirements would be the bar area of Buffalo’s at Beechwood (Although the children would have to stay in the foyer area attached to the bar I believe). TV’s in the restaurant are crummy but those in the bar and foyer are of the nice, large, HD variety.

It would probably have to be a chain

The only places I can think of would be Wild Wings on the Eastside, Buffalos, or places similar to those. Maybe the Blind Pig, also.

Well scratch them, then

I only went there once in what is going on six years in Athens. With repeat business like that, I can see why they are gone.

Family friendly

Do we know kids are coming? I have nothing against the idea at all (notwithstanding my personal disinclination from procreating — I myself am family-friendly, if not actual family-type), and welcome the prospect of fellow readers with kids and in no way want to discourage participation among those who don’t want to dump their kids off somewhere for a jaunt to Athens. (Is that enough? I really mean it.) But if we know for a fact that kids aren’t coming, I say find a bar (chains are not my favorite, but I’ll manage) that either serves food or would let a decent-sized group prepared to spend money bring our own. Just a thought.

I should have a good recommendation...

… what with living about 5 minutes away from the Athens-Clarke County line and all. Unfortunately, I just don’t go to that many gatherings in Athens that require TV access, as well.

Buffalo’s Southwest Grille at Beechwood seems to have a lot of options… they have a video tour on their website. So, that might be an option.

I’ve been to the Hilltop Grille (next to Applebees on Atlanta Highway) many times, but I don’t know if their meeting room has a TV in it. They might be able to arrange it, though, if you ask. (I know the owner, and he’s a pretty amenable guy… and a huge Georgia fan.)

Hopefully, we can make this an annual affair . . .

. . . so that vineyarddawg’s regrettable absence from the 2010 get-together (we have to come up with a name for this thing, preferably followed by a Roman numeral) won’t prevent us from enjoying his fellowship in 2011 and in future years.

eep.

I knew I shouldn’t have opened my mouth. :-)

One thing I’m definitely not is an event planner… but I am willing to make a few calls and see what’s available on the weekend in question.

I’m 100% in favor of doing it again next year! I don’t have any ideas for a name, though I would like to pre-emptively vote against “Dawgapalooza (roman numeral).” Been done before, and kind of played out IMO.

Seems that popular opinion has tilted away from having a room and more towards just hanging out in a bar area...

… but I did talk to my friend who owns Hilltop Grille, and they can definitely set up a TV in the back room with the game on it. There’s a required spending minimum, but no reservation fee other than that.

by vineyarddawg on Jun 16, 2010 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I suspect for a group of this size

and we’re talking 30 or so we’re going to have to have a reserved area. Whether that’s a whole bunch of tables or our own room is up for grabs. But I would be surprised if any place doesn’t say use our reserved room for a group of this size.

i would easily knock off 15% of the number - people tend to last minute no show - especially those of us flying cross country

i would bet on around 20 folks, maybe 25, but until mid Sept, the number is still a WAG for sure.

I'm not big on the idea of Buffalo's.

The atmosphere to me is just a little dull, plus I think it would be better to find somewhere downtown. If we could get there early enough, what about Mellow Mushroom downtown? They have a huge beer selection, they serve liquor, they’re family friendly, we should be able to get the space if we contact them ahead of time, and everyone likes pizza, right?

by hailtogeorgia on Jun 14, 2010 5:08 PM EDT reply actions

Mellow Mushroom

That would be a great place for this event. It has a fairly large bar area although the restaruant narrows as you go more toward the back of the building. I haven’t been there in a year or so but if I remember correctly they have several large TV’s around the bar.

Someone needs to open a Twisted Taco in Athens….that place would make a killing up there.

does it have a full bar

or just beer? and does it matter to us?

I like Tin Lizzy's better.

I felt like they aren’t quite as soggy and have more flavor. Also, Twisted Taco really is an Auburn bar…not just somewhere that Auburn people hang out. The owner went to Auburn, and on Saturdays in the fall, they are completely decked out with Auburn gear.

Current Standing

We have 16 folks who are planning to attend at this time, plus 10 that might attend. The FB event doesn’t allow an option to indicate if you are bringing someone with you. Apparently FB assumes each attendee will respond individually. I’ve sent a message through the event to the guests asking everyone to indicate if they are bringing a guest in the comments section. I just wanted to reiterate the request here so we can have an accurate headcount. Of course the purpose is to know how much space we need so we can choose an appropriate venue.

so I’m covered in that department.

That definitely helps

but between people not realizing that part, guests not being on FB etc, I was getting worried about headcount.
With guests, we are currently at 20 confirmed plus 10 or so maybe’s.
