Congratulations to UCLA on the 2010 NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championship!
The five-time defending national champion Gym Dogs were not even present for the NCAA Championships in women's gymnastics, which qualifies this season as an unmitigated disaster, but UCLA took home the title. This is good news, because it means third-place Alabama and fifth-place Florida didn't win the title.
Georgia, Alabama, UCLA, and Utah remain the only four teams ever to have won national championships in collegiate women's gymnastics.
In the individual competition, Georgia's Courtney McCool finished tied for second place on the balance beam.

Congrats to Courtney
Who has the most awesome last name in the history of ever.
This guy has a pretty happening name as well:

I think I would have been much more popular in high school if my last name was McCool.

Oh, yeah, McCool is definitely a great name
It speaks well of Courtney that she became a gymnast instead of a cartoon pitchman for a cigarette company.

Unmitigated disaster indeed...
… and I didn’t get the feeling like missing the championships was just a fluke, either. I’m afraid the glory days of UGA womens gymnastics are over, ala Alabama post-Bear.
I'm afraid you're right
I just don’t understand the philosophy of hiring from within in this instance. Suzanne Yoculan could not more totally have gone out on top; she had just won a fifth straight national championship. Other than Sarah Patterson, what college gymnastics coach wouldn’t have been on the next plane to Athens if Damon Evans had called? We could have gone out and gotten a proven commodity, but it looks like we went with a Johnny Griffith/Ray Goff/Ron Jirsa hire, instead.

Just tap me on the shoulder when our new coach is hired.
I’ll be in this position until then:

Suzanne is a smart lady
I think she realized that with Kupets graduating, UGA gymnastics was going to take a big step back (of course “big step back” for UGA gymnastics means just missing the NCAA Championships on a tie-breaker!)
I think UF is a year away – our two best gymnasts were both freshmen and one of them (Marissa King) crumbled under the pressure in the NCAA finals (her score was dropped in 3 of the 4 events, crushing any Gator dreams of a national title early, as her fall from the bars in the first rotation killed our chances). But hopefully she’ll be less nervous next season with some more experience. Our top gymnast (Ashanee Dickerson) apparently has nerves of steel, and was not affected by the pressure, tying for the 2nd best overall score across all events.
