Vanderbilt Commodores at Georgia Bulldogs Basketball Game Night Open Comment Thread

Vanderbilt Commodores at Georgia Bulldogs, Feb 6, 2010 8:00 PM EST

Admittedly, I pretty much ignored the midweek men's basketball game because it fell on national signing day and, frankly, I didn't think anyone would care.

Now, though, it's the weekend, the Fox Hounds are back in action at the Stegosaurus, and it's time to figure out if the Hoop Dogs can close the deal against an SEC opponent.

Should you be so inclined, you are welcome to comment on the evening's roundball action below.

Go 'Dawgs!

Defensively, we look so much better tonight...

Still gotta work on the turnovers.

Also… Kyle, do you know if the SEC TV contract is going to mean more televised baseball games this year? If so, I look forward to baseball gameday open comment threads where we can further discuss the many virtues of Steve Detweiler and his magic thumb tendons.

Liotta is certainly very masculine...

Then again so is Turner.

I’m tempted to give her a pass because of “Body Heat,”.but she has aged almost as well as Al Pacino and has a deeper voice.

Yeah… I’m gonna go with Turner.

Good call.

Somewhere between “The War of the Roses” and “V.I. Warshawski”, something happened to that woman. She’d make a good ESPN 2 Big Ten noon start play-by-play man announcer, though.

You have absolutely nailed the time-frame

She was still somewhat hot in “V.I. Warshawski” (as evidenced by the fact that anyone saw “V.I. Warshawski”), but she has not been hot since.

It’s sad, really, because she was smokin’ in her “Body Heat”/“Crimes of Passion” days. Heck, she was something else in “The Man With Two Brains,” “Romancing the Stone,” and “A Breed Apart.”

Fair enough, RedCrake

I know ESPN has the rights to the SEC tournament in Hoover, so we should be able to do open comment threads for those, at least.

At this point, I figure postseason baseball games deserve open comment threads, but I’m not sure about others. What do y’all think about doing open comment threads for regular-season weekend baseball series of particular significance?

Ummmmm

Coach Fox, when there is a 1 (on offense) on 2 (on defense) break, ususally one of the defenders takes the offensive player and the other drops low in the lane to prevent a pass. What happened?

Just my thoughts on halftime adjustments

1. We need to make shots with more regularity. If that means getting the ball inside and letting Trey go to work, then so be it. He’s got to play bigger and stronger in the post so that he can power over and through that Ogilvie kid. We need the shots to fall so that we can set up our D.

2. I think it’s time to adjust the defense a bit too. Haven’t seen any evidence that Vandy can handle pressure. I think a half court trap of some variety is in order. Hey, go with a junk defense and play box and 1 and don’t let that kid have the ball!!!

3. I think the Dawgs need to get out on the run and let Mr. Leslie get the crowd involved and get a little momentum going for us. It’s amazing how a dunk affects kids of that age. Me, I’ve been dunked on so many times, it doesn’t bother me.

4. We are taking shots from awkward positions. Not position on the floor, but body position. We are trying to score around the Ogilvie kid on the inside, we need to go through him when we get him moving, get the defensive blocking call. Not sure that we are getting everybody moving without the ball. If you don’t have the ball, move to a location so that you become a threat to get the ball and make something happen.

by EricBDawg on Feb 6, 2010 9:01 PM EST reply actions

I've seen

some instances where Vandy’s getting an absolute clear shot without a bulldog defender anywhere near them. We shouldn’t be letting that happen right? It looks to me like a missed assignment on defense?

by podunkdawg on Feb 6, 2010 9:04 PM EST reply actions

Correct.

There has to be a breakdown in the D somewhere. Either someone is out of position because they are lost either in the defense itself or they lost track of their man. Could be due to a screen that has picked them off of the player they are supposed to be defending, but before that happens, the other guys should be letting him know the screen is coming and he should be able to get over the top of it, or the guy defending the screener usually will hedge (get side by side with the screener so that the player having the pick set to free them has to go around the hedge allowing the defender time to go underneath the screen and recover to his man) and recover. (This is all easier to draw on a markerboard with a court superimposed on it than to type in words)

I'd probably understand it

Crowd is trying to get the Dawgs into it.

If the Dawgs can get a little something going to work them back up into a bit of a frenzy, maybe they can feed off of their energy a bit.

Giving up easy baskets doesn’t help, but getting a dunk and a foul does.

I like that play a lot.

I don’t care what Mr. Color Guy says, taking the ball to the inside and getting the D out of position is a great way for the Dawgs to get back in this thing.

If we’re going to call handchecks, let’s call them all game long. I watched about 50 of them in the first half that were not called. I’ll practically guarantee you that the officials mentioned that before the game in the captain’s meeting.

Georgia has not yet won a true road game

All the wins, impressive or otherwise, have come in Stegeman Coliseum or at a neutral site (in Duluth against Illinois).

Wins against ranked teams are always significant.

Doing it in a neutral site is even better because most NCAA tourney games are neutral site games.

by EricBDawg on Feb 7, 2010 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

True . . .

. . . but I’m guessing the Bulldog faithful are much more likely to be outnumbered at a neutral-site tournament game than they are at a neutral-side regular-season game in the Atlanta area against Illinois.

The Fox Hounds have yet to prove that they can beat a team, ranked or not, in a hostile environment. Given our dearth of roundball tradition, I doubt seriously whether we’d have the crowd on our side at a tourney game.

Good point.

However, your argument holds water if we are talking about tourney wins. Invitations, on the other hand, are not known for taking the location of the neutral site into consideration.

Travis Leslie

is a scorer. He was off at times, but continued to attack the basket when perhaps some lesser mortals might become timid because they were fouling him hard. In fact, Vandy set the tone on Leslie’s very first dunk attempt when the game began. He was great from the F/T line and made some deuces late. That is what a scorer does. Given the opportunity, they produce. Now, we’ve got to cure the turnover thing…

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Feb 6, 2010 11:40 PM EST up reply actions

Turnovers, just like in football,

are usually a product of not being completely focused. It could be from pressure of the other team, pressure of the situation, or just plain “what do I do now” (i.e. learning a new system and having second thoughts when you’re in the real game.) Things to be expected with a new staff and adjustments players have to make. It’s not like Coach Fox did the Calipari thing and brought in a whole team of new guys and kicked the ones who were there to the curb. By the end of the season, things should look A LOT better. For those that think we’re close enough to the end of the season for that statement to be bogus, well, let me ask you to take a look at the UNC basketball team. They’ll get the ship righted too, but it takes a little time.

by EricBDawg on Feb 7, 2010 9:26 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed

I think we got the guy who will lead this program out of utter and absolute national insignificance, though it remains to be seen whether he can carry us beyond that point.

It’s just frustrating seeing similar problems in multiple Georgia sports programs, even though I grant that Mark Fox has many, many more legitimate reasons for his difficulties than Willie Martinez ever did for his.
