I've got a fever! And the only prescription is more Grantham : Supplementary 2010 College Signing Day Coverage

As promised, I have pulled myself out of bed on one of my hard earned vacation days because I am a sick, sick man.

Blue_velvet_movie_image_dennis_hopper_01_medium

Not this sick, mind you, but obsessed nonetheless.

As I said in my announcement FanPost, I don't know any more about this stuff than any of you (and realistically I probably know significantly less than many of you), but I have something you don't have.... an insatiable drive to pick apart every little event in an increasingly negative way (come to think of it, some of you have that too, but I digress).

So here it is, supplementary college signing day coverage.

I'll keep it updated as fast as I can watch and type although I can't promise I won't doze off for awhile as the day goes on....

(Player status after the jump)

Star-divide

Signed/Enrolled (In order of signing):

Jakar Hamilton - S - 4 Star: #2 rated JUCO player in the country

Kolton Houston - OL - 3 Star - #23 OG Nationally

Michael Bennett- WR - 3 Star - #55 WR Nationally

Brandon Burrows - DE - 3 Star - #28 DE Nationally

Demetre Baker - LB - 3 Star - #25 OLB Nationally

T. J.  "Crazy Eyes" Stripling - DE - 4 Star - #4 DE Nationally

Kenarious Gates - OL - 3 Star

Marc Deas - DB - 3 Star - #51 Safety Nationally

Hutson Mason - QB - 3 Star

Alec Ogletree - DB - 4 Star - #3 Safety Nationally

Alexander Ogletree - RB - 3 Star

Jalen Fields - DE - 4 Star - #14 DE Nationally

Ken Malcome - RB - 4 Star - #24 RB Nationally

Mike Thornton - DT - 4 Star - #15 DT Nationally

Derek Owens - DB - 3 Star - #27 CB Nationally

Brent Benedict - OL - 4 Star - #12 OT Nationally

Dexter Morant - DE - 4 Star - #15 DE Nationally

Garrison Smith - DT - 4 Star - #3 DT Nationally

Lonnie Outlaw - WR - 2 Star - a 6'7" mystery.

(Note: All rankings based on Rivals.... some higher, some lower on Scout and ESPN, but I'm entirely too lazy to list them all so we'll just assume it balances out. )

The Commitments:

None left.

The Possibilities:

Mike Thornton - 9:00 - He's coming baby! /Dick Vitale

Da'Rick Rogers - CREAMSICLE!!! Spawn of Vince Dooley are now my sworn enemy. Also... Moneyhats?

Christian Green - 3:30 - FSU

Adrian Coxson - Florida.... enjoy living in the armpit of the Universe.

Kadron Boone- LSU

(Note.... my comments on non-signers are not directed at the character or quality of the players themselves, rather it is directed at their obvious lack of judgment.)

To be honest, I'm most excited about Garrison Smith and TJ Stripling.  Both have the potential to be great in the 3-4.  And Stripling has that crazy look in his eye that I really like in a DE/LB.

We may lose out on some guys, but it looks like Grantham is getting some really good players to work with on the defensive side of the ball.  Let the defence help us win some more games and the future offensive recruits will take care of itself.

RedCrake, you're a four-star . . .

. . . for working in a David Lynch reference. Nice.

It's tricky to find a way to relate any of them to any kind of real life situation...

But when (not if) Rogers signs with Dooley, Part Deux…. Images of severed ears and writhing oozing miniature chickens may temporarily flash through my mind.

RedCrake, you are so suave

The first thing I ever received payment for writing was a 1997 piece for Wrapped in Plastic (a “Twin Peaks” reference, by the way; it wasn’t a girlie magazine) entitled “David Lynch and the Happy Ending,” which explained why “Blue Velvet” had a happy ending, answered points raised by David Foster Wallace in his Premiere article on “Lost Highway” (which later was collected in A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again), and argued for a second “Twin Peaks” feature film to close out the story arc left danging (and how!) in the series finale.

Ah, good times, good times. . . .

My favorite David Lynch moment has to be watching Eraserhead with my mom...

She got it for me for Christmas and wanted to watch it with me. I told her she wouldn’t like it but she wouldn’t listen. Ooof.

Has a similar build to Rennie and could be another compact, gym rat type at LB.

A suggestion:

In addition to adding comments when players sign, you may want to edit the posting every so often to indicate status changes, either by putting “signed with Georgia”/“signed with _” next to the players’ names or by boldfacing or italicizing the names of Bulldog signees and striking through the names of guys who went elsewhere.

Just a thought. Thanks for doing this, though.

Ditto

Also, I posted it in the main thread, but I just got a call: Lonnie Outlaw signed with Georgia. Florida State pushed hard for the 6’7" wide receiver, too. He’s likely a redshirt or GMC-bound, but losing Da’Rick opened the door for us to sign Outlaw, who is out of Wilcox County and Nick Marshall’s best friend. This may give us a leg up on Marshall next year. This is a good thing, which salves the pain of losing other wide receiver prospects considerably.

Of course, they signed 31 kids — some of them will be told they don’t qualify or that their services are no longer required.

Their avg. star score is only five hundredths of a point hire than ours.

They have the #3 class in the country.

Average star rating is a much better metric

I’m not saying Auburn didn’t have a good day—-they did—-but, if your team signed 25 one-stars and my team signed five five-stars, we both had a 25-star recruiting class . . . and my team’s going to kick the crap out of your team next September.

As Brian Cook and Matt Hinton regularly remind us, you mustn’t forget to divide!

Been thinking on this for an hour or so

Auburn may find itself in a situation we are familiar with – some great stars, but no depth, no bench, no team. UGA has plenty of stars and it is looking to me like CMR and CTG are rounding out the “team”. We don’t really need a 5 star QB or RB. We need more linemen in general, some stronger folks across the board on D, and perhaps a couple of receivers, and it seems that is what we went after and what we are getting. UGA has been top in recruiting many years now and all it took was some downed linemen or piss poor secondary or bad tackling to change top recruiting to lack luster years.

Somehow, I think CMR is silently smiling, seeing his roster fill out nicely. Next year, I bet he goes after the 5 star playmakers once again to build the QB/RB roster.

Christian Green FINALLY makes an official announcement on ESPNU at 3:30

If he choosesUGA: tis that he sees Da’Rick headed to the VOLS and see’s his oppertunity to come to UGA in his place. At least that’s what I’m hoping his flip flop back and forth nature all morning has been about.

But if he Sticks with FSU: then God hates us and is trying to ruin our days that we were lazy and took off work and ignored responsibilities for some stupid day dedicated to the soap opera of fickle teenagers.

by RedCrake on Feb 3, 2010 3:40 PM EST reply actions

If your national signing day postmortem is at all optimistic, it's overly optimistic

I’ll pose here the questions I just posed in the main thread, viz.:

1. Does anyone dispute that Mark Richt is one of the ten best coaches in college football?
2. Does anyone dispute that Georgia is one of the ten most talented teams in college football?
3. Does anyone dispute that Urban Meyer is the best coach in college football?
4. Does anyone dispute that Florida is the most talented team in college football?
5. Does anyone dispute that Georgia and Florida both play in the same division?
6. If you concede the points made in the foregoing five questions (and I cannot see how you could deny any of them), what possible basis could you have for believing Georgia will not be to the 2010s what Tennessee was to the 1990s . . . namely, perennially between the fifth- and tenth-best team in the country, but perennially the second-best team in the SEC East?

Thanks for taking the lead on this, though, RedCrake. Except for the unrewarded angst and the borderline-suicidal depression, it’s been fun!

On that "Tennessee of the '90's" thing...

… who would have thought that the phrase “You can’t spell ‘Sugar’ without ‘UGA’” could have ever been looked at as a mocking remark? (Since, as we all know, the 2nd team from the SEC now goes to the Sugar pretty much every year.)

Gotta love the BCS.

1. No
2. No
3. I do, strongly…. his comeuppance is on its way
4. I do… and so does Alabama…. and this was before half their starters left.
5. Obviously no
6. Didn’t Tennessee win the National Championship in the 1990’s? Sounds ok to me…

But I take your point. As I’ve always said, at least your pessimism came about through reason.
