Instantaneous Ill-Informed Roundball Wrapup: Georgia Bulldogs 78, Florida Gators 76

Whew!

When you're up 45-30 at halftime at home, you shouldn't have to win a nailbiter, but that's what we have come to expect from this team, and, to their credit, the Hoop Dogs managed to hang on for the win.

It shouldn't have been this close, but the Fox Hounds closed the deal, and the Georgia Bulldogs notched a victory over the Florida Gators in the process.

The rest, frankly, is just details.

Go 'Dawgs!

I think they ran out of gas in the second half after an OT game on Thursday night.

This game started in the afternoon, too, not at night. Fox played Williams and DeMario more than he normally does because of this. The turnovers in the second half, and the fact that Florida was trying to quicken the pace all game, point to this.

They shot 71% through the first 3/4 of the game and dominated the boards. It was an unbelievably impressive performance after a deflating loss against a team that had something to play for. Not only am I not disappointed by letting it get close at the end, I am near-amazed at Fox’s ability to get this team up to play—they are getting better on the road, too—when they could have packed it in a long while ago.

We have a top 25 team next year, while this year, the team nobody wants to draw in the SEC tournament. I would not be surprised at all if we win a few games there.

Agree on all points

This team could go a long way in the tourney without the aid of any weather phenomena. And with South Carolina losing (as of this writing), we might not finish in the SEC East cellar. Keep winning and hopefully we’ll get a favorable 1st round draw in the tourney.

Oh, and our bench was amazing today. We needed everything they had. That is a confidence builder for all.

A heartening win!

Our guys are getting the hang of closing the game. Now they just need to get the road monkey off their back. Great team effort, so close on the heels of a tough loss. They deserve huge credit, and Coach Fox is the Real Deal.

I just listened to Fox's post game presser

and he acknowledged that fatigue really began to catch up to the team…and this is why Ebuka and Mayfield saw extensive PT. He said our cuts weren’t real sharp and defending became an issue down the stretch. Good thing we had the lead we had before UF made their run. And make no mistake: Florida has a very good team.

Next Year: A better Trey. A stronger Price. An improved Barnes. Travis will improve (if he works on his mid-range jumper, look out). With Robinson coming on board, the pressure on Ware will be reduced. Ebuka has game and is really a good athlete. Mayfield obviously can come off the bench and help out. I’m feeling the same way about next year’s Hoops team as I did at the end of the ’01 Football season: Much better days are ahead.

I'm glad Ebuka and Mayfield saw the action they did...

they produced in it, and it was a big help. We’re really gonna need those two to be consistent rotation pieces next year. A returning Leslie and Thompkins would give us a great pair of F. And with this staff, I think we can see big strides in individual skills.

I like Barnes and Price, but still don’t trust them against more talented players or handling double teams. None of our bigs seems to handle a double team well. I’m looking forward to Lalanne, at a supposed 6’10 with ball skills, and hope we can add one more piece to add quality depth to the front court (if not, that’s a big onus on Zlovaric to show more than he has so far) and a shooter to replace what McPhee gives (great hustle, and a near automatic make if his feet are set and shoulders square). With Robinson, and everyone else we’ve got capable of returning, we’re just two more bench pieces away from being a potential top 20 team—an outside shooter and someone who can give quality minutes around the paint.
