Florida Gators at Georgia Bulldogs Basketball Game Day Open Comment Thread
Florida Gators at Georgia Bulldogs, Feb 27, 2010 4:00 PM EST
This afternoon's outing at Stegeman Coliseum represents a winnable game for the Hoop Dogs, if only because any game in Stegeman Coliseum represents a winnable game for the Hoop Dogs, who are undefeated against SEC East squads in Athens.
This is an important game for a number of reasons, but I'm only concerned about two of them: (1) we're Georgia, and (2) they're Florida.
Feel free to follow the action and take part in the conversation in the comments below.

I've heard some discussion
about our guys having “tired legs.” I hope this is not the case after a tough OT game. For what it’s worth…Vandy is on the road and leading by 10 at the half against Arky…so there’s that.
A win over Florida is a win for America.

Someone just said any game at the Stege is a winnable game. When was the last time any of us said that?

BTW, Kyle...
I just found out that Harry Crews attended and later taught at the University of Florida, retiring in 1997. But I’ll forgive this transgression and am looking forward to reading the book you suggested ;-)
"If we score, we may win. If they never score, we'll never lose."
-Erk Russell
D'oh!
I had totally forgotten that about Crews . . . he grew up in South Georgia (and wrote a memoir of growing up there), but he spent much of his adult life in the Sunshine State. That somehow slipped my mind.
Still, James Dickey had ties to umpteen Georgia rivals, but he was still a great poet and novelist, so I guess we can forgive a writer’s poor taste in places to live.

Kinda' like Bill Dance.
I love to fish…and other than his ugly-ass ballcap, he’s alright in my book.

Which Crews book did you suggest?
I’m in the middle of The Gospel Singer now and am looking for another one of his to pick up when I’m done.

-Erk Russell
By the way . . .
. . . speaking of Floridians named Crews, Stetson’s Robert Crews is killing the Diamond Dogs right now. We’re in the top of the fifth in a close game and he has two home runs and a single.
Go 'Dawgs!
I'm really having a tough time
getting in my baseball mood. I guess it’s because even down here in south Florida it’s been a cold winter…or maybe I’m just so intrigued by our hoops team I really haven’t had any other focus. Anyway, runs are going to be at a premium again this season.

It reall irks me
to see all the empty, primo season ticket holder seats. Where/Who are these people?

I think they should institute a rule
If you aren’t in your seat by 5 minutes into the game, people from the upper level will be allowed to move down and take it.

No we do not.
Also, Florida is in this cause of threes. Regression to the mean, my friend. They will hit a dry spell and then we go for the throat. Just gotta keep it tight until then.

This would be a good poll question:
Who do you think will have the most success next year?
1. UGA Hoops
2. UGA Football
"If we score, we may win. If they never score, we'll never lose."
-Erk Russell
I'd say football probably
But the question is definitely complicated by the what the definition of success for both would be.
Winning 3/4 of the games would be wildly successful for the Hoop Dawgs. In football, people would be calling for Richt’s head.

that Stegeman would be a heckuva lot better if the high-rent non-showin’ douches would show up for such an important tilt. Like, is there a snowstorm/8.8 Magnitude quake/Tsunami/plague of locusts movin’ out of Oconee county heading towards Baxter street right now. SHOW UP, PEOPLE.

Rearrangement?
Maybe they can make some room up near the ceiling for some semi-fancy-pants, near-luxury box-type things (hyphen-out-of-bounds!), and transport those ticketholders up there, freeing up some space for schmoes like me who would make sure there’s a butt in the seat.
My dad had great seats for years...
as he was faculty up until about 2000. But he gave ‘em up a few years ago when you, I, and just about everyone else figured the Georgia Basketball Bulldogs would never rise above mediocrity. When he asked my opinion, I certainly didn’t try to talk him out of it. I bet he wishes he had those seats back now. This is an entertaining team. I just don’t understand why there are so many vacancies. Maybe some of the folks who have season tickets forgot they had ’em?

Good times in the Classic City
Despite getting Wernered (it’s a verb in Gainesville now), we had a great time in Athens Saturday. Although the game was particularly great from either team’s perspective, it was surely exciting.
I am not sure about the UGA students dressed in the full body stockings though (behind the basket in the suits that covered them from head to toe, including faces….it was very creepy) and the kid dressed as Rocky in Rocky III. and the other costumes. It seemed like a Halloween game or something.
After the game, we walked through south campus and then by the stadium on the way to town (my friend had never toured the campus before). It was windy and freezing out, but we ended up at Copper Creek Brewing Company for dinner and a couple beers. It is on Washington Street near the old Uptown (now 80eeeez?). The food was surprisingly excellent and the beers were tasty and a bargain at $3/pint. We met a Phi Mu there with her parents for parents weekend. I am guessing Phi Mu is a very good sorority at UGA. We asked the bartender where a good place was to go out and she wasn’t much help. She tried to direct us away from anyplace where Greeks go because she said they were full of “chicks with mini-skirts and high heels.” I am not sure what she thought we were looking for, but when we asked her where those type of places were, she wasn’t much good at knowing those either.
After that we walked around town and it was still too early for much action, so we ducked into Wexbys to grab some obscure tunes. Good stuff.
We noticed (and were disappointed) that the most crowded places in town were Mellow Mushroom, Doc Cheys, and Transmetropolitan. We opted for the only non-chain with people and the line was out the door. Pizza smelled good but we just ate so we went to the upstairs bar for another beer. It was fine, but more expensive ($5 pint) for a college town.
After that we headed across the street to the Loft. It took me a while to figure out that it was the former Lowry’s and while they did not have nickle night, they did have $1 wells, $1 shots and $1.50 beers until 11….which caused us to stay even though we were literally the only 2 people in the entire place. (plus, the bartender was the type of girl that you wouldn’t mind hanging out with for a while until the crowd showed up). She told us that it gets really crowded later and while we didn’t really believe her, we stayed for the cheap drinks, and she was really cool, even going to get new T-shirts for us “so that we didn’t have to wear those Gator shirts around all night.” After the team’s performance on the court, she had a point.
Amazingly, after several beers and a bunch of shots (mostly taken with the bartender since my buddy was driving), the place really did fill up. Around 11:50 we ran back across the street to the Transmetropolitan (because the line finally died down) to try to the pizza. It was okay, but I didn’t thnk it was anything special. My friend really like it though and got a second slice. We then returned to the Loft for another hour or so until 1am – when it was really packed, and decided to call it a night.
Does anyone know what the Transmetropolitan used to be in the 90s? I can’t remember for the live of me!
'90s is after my time (barely)
Can’t help you with what the Transmetropolitan used to be. In fact, every single place you mentioned did not exist in Athens when I was in school from ‘84-’91, although toward the end of my time there, a joint called the Loft opened on Broad Street.
And I think you mean Wuxtry? Quality of sororities comes and goes, I guess, but Phi Mu traditionally has been very strong (founded, along with ADPi, at Wesleyan College in Macon, GA; both were founded as chicks’ literary societies (Philomathean and Adelphean) and adopted Greek-letter names later; they’re older as organizations go, but my fraternity’s sister sorority – and my mother’s sorority – Kappa Alpha Theta, was founded as the first Greek-letter fraternity known among women).
Anyhoo. Thanks for the report. Glad you had a good time.
by NCT on Mar 2, 2010 9:55 PM EST up reply actions
Wuxtry
You are right – I flubbed the name, badly!
Sororities are an interesting study. At UF, Delta Gamma had the best looking girls (it wasn’t even close), but they are weak nationally. I believe Phi Mu is back at UF, but they were on hiatus when I was in school, actually leasing their house to Pi Beta Phi (which I am been told is tied to both the Wrigley’s gum and Parker Pens creator, accounting for the prominant arrows in each company’s logo.
In undergrad, I worked as a bus boy at Chi-Omega. Great job. We were paid in food, plus whenever any of the girls didn’t have a date for a function, they would just ask a bus boy.
