Instantaneous Ill-Informed Roundball Wrapup: Georgia Bulldogs 66, South Carolina Gamecocks 61
Sigh. Same story, different day. A Georgia athlete gets arrested on an outstanding warrant over something stupid involving a slow-moving vehicle. The Fox Hounds have the game tied at the half. The Hoop Dogs get behind after intermission. In a close men's basketball game, the Bulldogs . . .
Wait. What?
We won?!?!
No way!
Well, I'll be danged.
Good job, guys.
Of course, this guarantees a loss in Knoxville on Wednesday. I mean, we all know we're not winning on the road or winning two in a row.
Go 'Dawgs!

Couple of good things from today...
Turnover problem much better. Only 10. Is this a season low?
J. Price. 33 minutes, 16 points, 6 for 8 at the line, 7 rebounds. Nice work.

See?
I start thinking even the slightest of good thoughts about Georgia, and it jumps up and bites me like Uga going after an Auburn wideout.

Upsetting...
the Gymdogs get a legit recap. Men’s hoops are treated like a joke. Hopefully that will change within 12-24 months as Fox establishes his program.
As I have indicated on numerous occasions, my basketball knowledge is minimal . . .
. . . and, therefore, any attempt at in-depth analysis on my part would be woefully inadequate.
Rather than ignore the sport altogether, I choose to offer more emotional/visceral reactions, which I admit are a poor substitute for detailed examination, but which are better than nothing, since, to repeat, in-depth analysis by me would be inadequate.
As always, I welcome and encourage the posting of fanposts by more learned fans than me, which I will happily promote to the front page where warranted.
Go 'Dawgs!
I will start complaining about the men's basketball recaps...
… when said team wins its third national championship, thereby surpassing one-quarter of the total that the gymnastics team has already won. Unfortunately, the Foxhounds are still three national championships away from that number.
Until that time, I remain of the opinion that Stegeman Coliseum is that Gymnastics venue where the women’s basketball team also plays… and I think another team might, as well.

And opinions like this...
is one of the big hurdles Georgia men’s hoops is having to clear to become the program it’s capable of being. It’s pretty tought to become respectable when your own won’t even support you.
Well, to be fair...
… I’m probably not representative of the typical Georgia fan. I went to women’s basketball games and gymnastics meets far more than men’s basketball games when I was in school, and that even encompassed the 2 “glory years” under Tubby Smith. Men’s basketball has always outdrawn the women, even though the women have been to 4 final fours and their tickets only cost $1 a game to non-students (and students get in free).
The uncomfortable fact is that, as with virtually every athletics program not located in Columbia, South Carolina, the fans follow the programs that win. It’s the reason why the Gym Dogs sell out the Stegosaurus for virtually every meet, while the men historically can’t even sell out the arena for the Kentucky game (and even that’s with 50% Kentucky fans).
I understand that Damon Evans wants Georgia’s men’s basketball program to be just as good as the football program is, and I support the Steg Dawgs if for no other reason than the fact that they are a team that carry the name “Georgia Bulldogs.” It will take a period of years, though, for the fan base to approach what it now is at other SEC powers. Thompson-Boling Arena in Knox-vegas certainly wasn’t a bustling place during men’s games before Bruce Pearl, and I’ll wager that the O’Connell Center in Gainesville was about as inspiring a venue as the Steg before Billy Donovan rolled into town.
I hope the men’s program does win a SEC and national championship, and go on to become one of the perennial basketball powers in the SEC. Personally, though, I’ll still be far more likely to go to a gymnastics meet or a women’s game. (Or, for that matter, a baseball game. Foley Field is a great place to watch the game that used to be America’s pastime.)

The men have sold out Steg...
althought that is generally a half-season lag behind a high level of success (Tubby, Harrick’s latter years). I think Fox will begin to resume that success.
As for GymDogs “sell outs”, do they still give away 1000s of tickets to local youth organizations? I know they used to and would count those as tickets sold padding the numbers.
But back on men’s hoops. We are developing into a good team, who plays the game soundly and are enjoyable to watch. I think as Fox begins to establish himself, we will likely see an increase in ticket sales and interest next year, and if we can have some early season success, sell 75+% of tickets for SEC games with 2011-2012 selling out most games. It’s a slow process, but the level of high school talent around the state, and the financial resources of both the University and that comes from a successful hoops program mean we need to do more work to fail at men’s hoops than to succeed. But, many fans (and you are not uncommon vineyard) care more about football primarily and still seem to dismiss men’s hoops as a problem child they don’t want ciphoning off precious football resources or bringing an NCAA eye onto the program as a whole, with perhaps a few secondary sports with personal ties (I call them secondary just on financial reasons).
And Steg, when it’s over half full and has an energetic fan base, is a great place to watch a basketball game. The sound really gets trapped under the concrete roof, and there isn’t a bad seat in the place.

Yes, it really is. From the games I’ve attended, I am certain that our students and non-student fans (mostly alumni, I suppose) are yearning for an excuse to go crazy. We’re 3-7 in the conference, right? I am certain that the point at which people feel we have a reasonable shot at going .500 is the point at which Stegeman becomes something new and terrifying. Better than .500 and we will beg to get in.
Glad to hear this
and there isn’t a bad seat in the place
I’m heading up on the 27th for the Florida game and I think my seats might be in the last row (but near midcourt if I recall).
I have been to the Coliseum several times for basketball games and even for a gymnastics meet. I took my daughters to the “tie” meet when Florida came to town a few years ago…..speaking of controversy, Florida was leading by 5/100ths of a point heading into the final rotation where both teams earned the same score total on their last events….BUT after “recalculating” the scores from earlier, it seems, that the meet ended in a deadlock, instead of a 5/100ths of a point Gator victory….hmmmmm I demand an investigation!!
Nah, Suzanne and I go way back....
She used to ask me for spots back when the Spacecenter first opened (while she was lifting weights – not spots for her gymnasts – she knew better than that!!)
