As with Georgia Tech's hiring of Al Groh, I greet Florida's hiring of the Arizona Cardinals' secondary coach neither with laughter nor with weeping.

It's a perfectly respectable hire, but it doesn't scare me. I doubt seriously whether Coach Austin is an upgrade from Charlie Strong and I'm absolutely confident Todd Grantham is an improvement upon Willie Martinez, so at least we appear to have won the "offseason coaching change" portion of the competition.

Moral Victory Indeed

Mr King…get away from the dog bowl and stop slobbering about Florida Gators with nonsense. Read the articles at LEAST man. UF has CO COORDINATORS on defense and Coach Austin will be co coordinerator with Coach Chuck Heater.

You see Mr King…unlike other schools that have coaching disputes and back stabbing..we are fortunate to have Coach Meyer hire coaches who will have each others backs and not worry about egos. They dont need job titles.

Of course you have witness the powerfulness of Coach Meyers ability to surround himself with talented asst coaches who will bust butt to recruit, coach and be mentors to young adults. Maybe you caught glimpses of our school on tv recently and seen the success? Awww I know you have Mr King…probably cuddled up with a dawgie blankie and some popcorn wistfully wishing that it was red and black unis you could watch win BCS titles and SEC rings. Its ok ….Im sure the dawgs will return to prominence in the future, you arent too old are you? I mean…it could be 10-15 yrs from now.

My suggestion is watch more Orange and Blue games and take note…with pen and paper so you wont forget…then prepare suggestions for the coaching staff in Athens so that maybe they can start to succeed in the future. Yes, Mr King…I would be absorbed with the dawg staff and their duties rather than the staff assembled in Gainesville that continue to take the dawgs lunch money at recess..err WLOCP in Jax.

But if you must continue with your admiration of all things Gator, then please try to post correct information so as to not confuse the readers in puppyland….especially since they are used to being spanked with newspapers not with actually reading them. Coach Austin and his coach mates look forward to this years rendition of the WLOCP in Jax and Meyer and co. will show him how much fun it is to play and frolic with pups.

Exactly

Kyle,
Please be more careful to observe the correct titles and structure at the university of florida, e.g. Head Coach Interim Head Coach Offensive Coordinator Corch’s Personal Assistant and #2 Man That Still Sits at the Kiddie Table Steve Addazio
and
Former CO-Defensive Coordinator Recruiting Place Holder George Edwards
and
Former Head Corch On-hiatus Corch Back-at-work Head Corch and #1 Daddy-of-the-Year Urban Meyers

For a while i was a little concerned about the comment I made that got nominated for “comment of the week”. When I made it, it was in the context of the earlier discourse about whether Meyer knew or didn’t know about Coach Edwards’s departure and, if so, whether he should have told recruits, followed by a brief discussion of message-board abbreviations for coaches’ names (jeez, I can’t believe I’m actually spelling all this out). It wasn’t meant to be a direct insult at the Corch, but a little punchline from those other discussions.

But in honor of Reel Gator’s charm and good manners, I must ask you, fotodog, when listing the Corch’s various titles, not to forget “Lying Scumbag”.

You're allowed to say that . . .

. . . but can you refute his point?

I apologized for calling Urban Meyer a scumbag. Do you have any evidence for believing he is an honest man?

I know exactly what I’m talking about. I even explained it for those who may have missed the lead-up. With all due respect, I’m certain it is you who have no idea what you’re talking about. And I am certainly allowed to say it. I may even say it aloud.

I dont get what there is to not understand? If I am way out of line, then please correct me. Without reading into the threads I just assumed the whole Edwards leaving for the NFL led to the Lying Scum Bag. I dont know how the comment came about, I dont know if it was a joke and you didnt really beleive it. All I know is your still saying it. So if I was wrong for thinking you still believe it then my bad, but if I went around saying the Bulldogs suck becuase it was some sort of inside joke from another thread, I think a UGA fan would step in some where and say WTF. And that is me.

I guess I am just a nice guy, but I dont call people lying scum bags over speculation. And here is one link to why I think he isnt a scumbag, and no I cant prove he isnt a liar, but if you cant prove he is a liar in my opinion its pretty low to call him one.

Yeah, I figured that, and I followed it . . .

. . . and I saw that, almost a decade ago, a much younger Urban Meyer, despite having small children in his home, appears to have moved in with his players. That’s supposed to impress me . . . how, exactly?

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Feb 13, 2010 11:38 PM EST up reply actions

Why do I have this feeling of you already know what I will say, and your just waiting for me to say it?

Its supposed to show you what lengths Meyer will go, to connect with his players. He wants his players to feel comfortable around him. He cares about his players relationship between them. Why would a coach who cares about his players relationship also lie and try to trick them? I have heard no complaints from any of his players either, they all seem to be happy with him. So the only evidence that supports him being a lying scum bag are rumors that people spread such as he knew about Edwards being gone but kept it hush hush on purpose so the players Edwards didnt even recruit wouldnt change thier mind.

It was meant to be a joke

You see, there was a big fuss here recently over Meyer’s having been referred to as a “lying scumbag” (in case you hadn’t noticed, Meyer’s being a liar has been a theme for as long as he’s been Florida’s coach — accurate or not, like it or not, there it is; the fact that it’s a prevalent theme makes it fair game for humor, like Richt’s hyper-piety). You may not find it funny, and frankly, my attempt at humor likely was pulled from too many separate parts for anyone but regular visitors to this site to catch what I was trying to do.

Try not to take it personally. I was having fun at the harmless “expense” of Florida’s very successful head football coach, not your sister. And I seriously doubt anything I say in a blog comment will have an effect on Meyer’s reputation as honest or dishonest. That reputation’s a done deal.

by NCT on Feb 14, 2010 1:41 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

If it was just a joke as I said I apologise if I came off too defensive.

BTW- I dont like how todays society thinks it all fun and games to laugh at the expense of another, especially when the person is not laughing with you. The whole “treat others how you want to be treated” isnt in todays society anymore. Of course Meyer will probly never hear any of these comments but that is not the point. Any ways someone doesnt have to be a freind or family member for them to be defended.

Sadly his post does not suggest he possess this same knowledge. Perhaps this post is the exception rather than the rule.

Thanks, Reel Gator. I appreciate your respectful rejoinder to my controversial and derogatory statements that Teryl Austin represented “a perfectly respectable hire” but did not “scare me,” that I questioned whether the Gators’ new co-defensive coordinator was superior to Charlie Strong (who was an outstanding defensive coordinator or co-defensive coordinator in the Southeastern Conference for many years), and that I felt comfortable declaring Todd Grantham a better defensive coordinator than Willie Martinez. Clearly, these over-the-top statements crossed the line, and very well may have bordered on the libelous.

I think I’m just going to quit mentioning other teams altogether.

For what it's worth . . .

. . . here is the take of a sane and rational Gator fan:

In 2005 and ‘06, the Gators were successful with Greg Mattison and Charlie Strong, but those two had a previous relationship at Notre Dame. Heater will now be asked to work with a relative stranger. These coaches are professionals, but we already saw internal politics send Billy Gonzales to LSU, so don’t think these guys can’t get jealous or upset. Heater, if he wants to be sole coordinator, can point to 30 years experience in college football. But Austin offers things Heater does not have; young guy, NFL experience and two Super Bowl appearances.

Austin having what Heater lacks and vice versa might be the reason why Urban Mayer (and Steve Addazio) thinks this is a good fit. But I always wonder if too many coaches spoil the roster.

We may have "won" in relative terms

But considering that “an improvement over Willie Martinez” isn’t saying all that much, we may still be behind in absolute terms.

Leaving insightful football commentary and analysis to other people since 2006.

by wwcmrd? on Feb 12, 2010 1:57 AM EST reply actions

No doubt, wwcmrd?

However, given the clear superiority of the Gators’ 2009 coaching staff and the Gators’ 2010 recruiting class over the Bulldogs’ 2009 coaching staff and the Bulldogs’ 2010 recruiting class, we needed change in both directions, with Georgia getting better and Florida getting worse. In all likelihood, both of those things happened, albeit perhaps only incrementally so.

Will it be enough to overcome recent history? Two years ago, when the ‘Dawgs were coming off of their second victory over the Saurians in a four-year period and had suffered their last four series losses in Jacksonville by margins of seven (2002), three (2003), four (2005), and seven (2006) points, I’d have said probably so. After back-to-back beatdowns (which, while closer than the scores indicated, still were nowhere near close), I’m not so sure, but every little bit helps.

Let's Give Reel Gator What He Wants

“As with Georgia Tech’s hiring of Al Groh, I greet Florida’s hiring of the Arizona Cardinals’ secondary coach neither with [weeping] nor with [laughter].

I [do not] doubt seriously whether Coach Austin is an upgrade from Charlie Strong and I’m [not] absolutely confident Todd Grantham is an improvement upon Willie Martinez, so at least we appear to have [lost] the “offseason coaching change” portion of the competition."

Except for changing “won” to “lost,” I’m not sure what negating all the factual statements in the post actually changes. I do like the thought of “a less-than-respectable hire that scares me,” because that sounds a lot like Urban Meyer.

by first and thom on Feb 12, 2010 10:13 AM EST reply actions

Inevitably...

if the Gators struggle in 2010 they will blame the same coaches they’re so excited about today. I’ve lived in Florida now for over five years and most Florida fans believe that their team will be on top forever.

Georgia fans might find this attitude annoying, but it’s the Florida State fans who are the most annoyed. All runs comes to an end, and when this one does the “gator nation” is going to be a land of profound sadness.

Yes most Florida fans feel that way because where you had a couple buddys who enjoyed talking trash to you because it is clear it gets to you. “Most” of do not think we will be on top forever considering just last season we came in second in the SEC I dont consider that on top. 2007 Michigan made us look stupid. Now wouldnt you find it pretty ignorent if I said my sister in-law lives in GA and the UGA fans there think (insert rediculous comment)?

That's not a hypothetical question

We get that all the time. Take a look at the some of the comments here.

I have found that the best way to debunk opposing fans’ stereotypical views of my fan base is to behave in a way that refutes, rather than confirms, those stereotypes. Some Florida fans like skigator93, Year2, and renegator obviously use the same approach I do. Other Florida fans, just as obviously, do not.

They may blame the coaches...

But I’d venture to say they might also blame loss of important senior leadership and injuries (when and if they occur). You know, the same reasons we were lamenting in 2008 which so many of them mocked.
