Mailbag Time Again!: Answering More E-Mails From Auburn Fans
Since the last time I opened the ol' mailbag to reveal the nuggets that fans of the Auburn Tigers had left in my e-mail in-box, I have been sent another electronic correspondence from a booster of the Plainsmen, which I received this morning after being out of the office all day on Thursday:
Just thought I would let you know that the NCAA has declared Cam Newton eligible. Also, if you didn't know Auburn beat bama last week. WAR EAGLE you piece of crap.
I replied:
Thanks, _______! Yes, I saw both the Iron Bowl and the recent news reports, but I appreciate the heads up, just the same.
While I will be rooting for South Carolina tomorrow, I wish Auburn good luck and I fully expect to see the Tigers represent the SEC in the national championship game. You have an exceptional team there.
Please accept my best wishes for a merry Christmas and a happy new year for your family and you.
Sincerely,
Kyle King
For what it's worth, we have plenty heated rivalries with Florida, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, and Tennessee, and their fans don't do this.

Many Auburn fans are complete jerks. Also, the sky is blue, ice is cold...
… and other obvious things.
Personally, though, I think the reason that you don’t get this kind of stuff from more Florida fans is because they don’t really know how to use them computer-things and the world wide intertubes.
Maybe, . . .
. . . but that doesn’t explain the fact that the guys from the Georgia Institute of Technology are better behaved than some Auburn fans.
(Please note my use of the word “some.” Contrary to popular belief, I am not maligning all Auburn fans, just the percentage of the Auburn fan base that deserves it. I maintain, based upon at least the last quarter-century of personal experience, that a larger percentage of the Auburn fan base deserves it than the corresponding percentage of other fan bases, but others’ mileage may vary.)

Incidentally, . . .
. . . vineyarddawg hates Florida, and I hate Auburn. Someone needs to design a Venn diagram with one orange circle and one blue circle to graph the intensity of our views of major Georgia rivals. :)

As noted previously on this site . . .
as a Dawg Sports contributor raised in south Georgia during the 1990’s, I would be among the folks in the middle of that diagram.
I might just get on that.
Of course, with my fierce procrastination streak, I might just get on that tomorrow, too.
Kyle King,
As an Auburn fan, let me apologize for Auburn fans who have treated you so poorly. It’s been an embarassing season for us, but that is no excuse for bad behavior. I love the Georgia/Auburn rivalry and hate some have represented our fan base so badly.
"It's been an embarrassing season for us" is interesting
Because it’s been a heck of an impressive season for you as well. That Auburn team is no-joke good. It may also be no-joke bad. There is much for which to be proud, and (in some cases) perhaps much to be ashamed of.
In that respect, I think Nick Fairely is the paradigmatic player – not Cam Newton. Fairely is really good. But, after the play, he’s also pretty bad. He takes the game right up to the line and, if his conduct is within the rules, everyone acknowledges that what he often does will likely be forbidden soon.

You are correct sir, and even though
I have thoroughly enjoyed Auburn’s play, the press has been horrible. Terrible damper on a season that should be enjoyable. I agree with you on Fairley. My husband and I discussed this first after the LSU game. He’s a great, talented guy who sometimes goes over the line. I hope the AU coaches have addressed this adequately. We’ll see tomorrow!
Thanks, aubgrad.
As I have noted several times recently, my overall opinion of the Auburn fan base has improved by leaps and bounds in the last several years, due to the Auburn alumni and fans with whom I have become acquainted in that time (including jujdawg’s son-in-law, who deservedly received a favorable mention in another recent comment thread, and a number of the bloggers and commenters who represent the Tiger fan base). I recognize that every fan base (including the one of which I am a part) has both its good and its bad elements, and, while my experiences with Auburn fans have, on the whole, been less positive than my experiences with other rival fan bases, that is not universally true, and, thanks to fans like you, it is less true than it used to be.
Much obliged, aubgrad. I will be rooting for South Carolina tomorrow, but I wish the Tigers luck, and I wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Seriously...this is what I'm talking about below.
I mean, who else would properly capitalize their holiday well-wishes?

I will never understand how anyone who visits this site more than a couple of times...
…can get so worked up about what you say about their teams or fanbase. Your trash talk is about as refined and mannerly as it gets.
On second thought, maybe they’re intimidated by your high-falutin’ talk. Or your sparkling grammar.

Admittedly I've never trolled/trawled another programs blogs other than reading the occasional linked (usually insightful) article
So there may be some reason for the disconnect, but I just can’t imagine the thought/action process that goes into regularly checking in on an opposing team’s blog, searching out the proprieters email, and writing an email such as the one above (which more than likely will fall on deaf ears no less).
Furthermore, I would feel pretty terrible about representing the good folks of my fanbase (of which Auburn has many) so poorly.
Then again, I only engage in blatant douchebaggery on special occasions.

T Kyle King,
I wasn’t sure where to post this, but seeing as this was an Auburn related post, I will put it here.
Thanks for the kind words regarding Zac on TET. Things like that mean a lot, at least to this Auburn fan.
I would like to apologize for the hate mail you are getting from some Auburn fans. It is my hope and belief that their feelings do not represent the feelings of most Auburn fans. There is no excuse for it and I find it very distasteful. While it is not helping matters that you write posts like this and link them to RBR, I don’t think that the occasional poke between rivals deserves the kind of hate mail that you seem be receiving on a regular basis.
So again, on behalf of the like minded Auburn fans that I know would agree with me, I sincerely apologize for these continued attacks on your inbox and the ignorant Auburn trolls that may frequent your site. Good luck to your team, and may you and yours have wonderful and happy holiday season.

Thanks, Jumpn_JackFlash.
For the benefit of those who may not have seen it, Track ‘Em Tigers posted Zac Etheridge’s truly inspiring story. I often say the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry is institutional, not personal, and the tale of this extraordinary young man’s comeback from a terrible injury is the “feel good” story of the college football season. Regardless of whether you root for the Auburn Tigers, you have to be rooting for Zac Etheridge.
I appreciate the comment, Jumpn_JackFlash. You and many other writers and commenters from TET frequently represent your fan base well here, which I appreciate. I send my best wishes to you and your family this holiday season, as well; may it be a safe and joyous one for all.

By the way, . . .
. . . point taken on the “Ten Things Auburn Fans Should Do Before They Die” posting. Except when breaking news (which that was not) brings points of contention to the fore, I try not to poke the Tigers (as evidenced by the fact that I steered clear of the Cecil Newton saga when previewing the game), but I concede the point regarding that particular lapse.
