SEC Power Poll (Week Ten): Two Sets of Tigers on Top; Military Mascots Bring Up the Rear

Fresh from Saturday’s victory between the hedges, I am back in the saddle and ready to cast my belated ballot to determine which of two scoundrels is the lesser evil in the Georgia gubernatorial race the order in which the twelve teams of the Southeastern Conference ought to be arranged. Here is how I see the league at this point in time:

1. Auburn Tigers (10-0): The good news for the Plainsmen is that they’re undefeated. The bad news for the Plainsmen is that, given the history of their program, an undefeated season at Auburn pretty much has to be accompanied by an NCAA investigation. It’s like convening a grand jury as soon as a new mayor is elected in Chicago; it just saves time.

2. LSU Tigers (8-1): Fortunately for the Bayou Bengals, a team’s record contains a number for "you win some" and another number for "you lose some," but not a number for "how you played the game." Seriously, were any of us surprised to learn that Les Miles is on grass?

3. Alabama Crimson Tide (7-2): Two ‘Bama losses this season? Who could have seen that coming?

4. Arkansas Razorbacks (7-2): For my birthday last week, my wife and children gave me a membership in Zingerman’s monthly bacon club, which began with Tanya Nueske’s Wisconsin Applewood-smoked bacon. That’s neither here nor there, really, but I thought I’d mention it in relation to the Hogs, for the benefit of upcoming Arkansas opponents who are interested in feasting on the flesh of the enemy. Clearly, that didn’t help South Carolina in this weekend’s battle of the barnyard, though.

5. Mississippi St. Bulldogs (7-2): How ‘bout them ‘Dogs?

6. Florida Gators (6-3): Deep down, we always knew the Sunshine State Saurians were going to cruise to a first-place finish in the SEC East. We just didn’t know that achieving that feat would be less impressive than winning the Big 12 North.

Star-divide

7. South Carolina Gamecocks (6-3): Columbia is home to a quality college baseball program that produced the 2010 national champion. Perhaps the Palmetto State Poultry’s solid diamond tradition explains their sports programs’ propensity for ceasing to play after the World Series ends in October.

8. Georgia Bulldogs (5-5): The Bulldogs rank fourth in the league in scoring offense, they rank fourth in the league in scoring defense, and they’re .500 ten games into the season. What’s wrong with this picture?

9. Kentucky Wildcats (5-5): That couple who got married at a tailgate before the Wildcats’ homecoming loss to Georgia will be relieved to learn that, in the Bluegrass State, John Calipari is vested with the authority to grant annulments.

10. Mississippi Rebels (4-5): Admiral Ackbar really dodged a bullet on that whole mascot selection thing.

11. Tennessee Volunteers (3-6): The Vols can hang half a hundred on an in-state opponent any time they like. It’s just those teams from the other 49 states that give them trouble.

12. Vanderbilt Commodores (2-7): Robbie Caldwell comes across as an exceptionally likable fellow. We all know where nice guys finish.

Honestly, those rankings seem pretty clearly set in stone to me, but I welcome your constructive criticisms in the comments below.

Bama

What an absolute horrible weekend for Bama… they lost to LSU and one of the teams they lost to got demolished… oh, and their rivals are sitting a top everyone.

RE: Les and grass
I think Goff used to chew on grass from time to time, also.

The story of the year is MSU

I said last year that they looked to be much improved, and even dangerous this year. I hope they win a few more for sure, particularly their bowl. Congrats to them.

Losing to Miss St

That loss doesn’t look as bad now, though I would like to play them again…..guess that won’t happen except in some parallel universe though.

The only Georgia game I have been able to attend in the last two years was in Boulder…..now THAT was a disgrace. See where Kansas (Kansas!!) came back from a 17-45 deficit in the last 11 minutes to beat the Buffs?…….how could we have possibly lost to that outfit…maybe THE most disgraceful loss in the last 20 years….not in the magnitude of the game or the score, just the sheer ineptitude of the opposition yet still got whupped

I reckon ineptitude of the opposition will not be an issue this Saturday.

Thats what losing 3 in a row will do to you...

When you lose 3 in a row you need to regroup…kind of hard to regroup when you have to travel 2000miles that week. I would imagine that would have been a win had it been in Sanford.

No doubt it was a horrible, horrible loss, but I would have been ready to hop on the fire Richt bandwagon if we were 3-1 going into that game.

You are still an ignorant twit for continuing to hate on Michael Adams instead of showing appreciation. But hey, its all about fitting in with the “in-crowd”, right?

That's fine.

However, while reasonable fans may disagree over the pros and cons and Michael Adams, I don’t think the independent auditors who raised very real concerns about his mismanagement of university funds are ignorant twits who were interested in fitting in with the “in” crowd. One can believe that not extending Vince Dooley’s contract was the right thing to do yet still conclude that Michael Adams has done more harm than good as president of the University of Georgia.

You need to update your Auburn hate page

All of your NCAA website links are bad. When you do update them, check out the ones from the late 50’s. Click on the links to the info. There’s nothing there. The NCAA is its own Ministry of Information.

The only account of it I have heard is from a simple biography called Shug that I found in a Birmingham library. In addition to learning about how Shug Jordan served as an engineer in the WWII campaigns of Sicily, Normandy, Northern Africa and in the Pacific, the author, citing Montgomery and Birmingham papers, stated that the incidents leading to the violations involved a student buying an AC with his father’s money, and when asked by NCAA both stated, under separate questioning, that he had been the one who bought it.

The NCAA claimed that one of them must by lying since they both said they bought the window AC.

The other major violation was that the same QB, I think Ron Fuell was his name, drove around his wife’s (yes, people got married early back then) car, and the NCAA said that Auburn bought it from them, when it can be shown that his in-laws bought it for his wife for a HS graduation gift.

Challenging the NCAA is difficult now. Challenging them then was impossible.

As for the rest of the hate page. Be clear- do you think Auburn’s football program should get the death penalty, or should all athletic programs there? Because Georgia’s way up there, too (I should also mention Pat Dye went there at this point) in total and in football violations, and the 2004 violation you cite didn’t have anything to do with football. It was basketball, and ,we’ve hired a Calipari product so I’m not holding my breath.

Also, speaking of Ministry of Information, is it me, or has the comments section on the Auburn hate page become shorter?

Keep the venom spewing, Kyle!

"The Auburn hate page"?

I’m not sure to what you are referring.

This one- the one you linked to in the entry about Auburn at the top of this post.

That was a posting written in response to a 2006 news report.

The links worked at the time; I’m sorry if they don’t now, but the information is accurate. I don’t update it because it was written in a particular news context, and, while certain details remain pertinent, it doesn’t make much sense for me to go back and re-edit old news from four and a half years ago.
