As a playcaller, Richt was imaginative

I came across this YouTube link last night.  My purpose for attaching this video is to remind everyone that there was a time, not so long ago, when our head coach was calling the plays with the occasional flair of artistry...

This three-play sequence from the 2003 Auburn game illustrates my point.  The scoring drive is fast, and on two of the three plays, we used:

  • An end-around using the flanker.  Michael Johnson's pass was underthrown, but Gibson made a great catch.  I believe we've seen A.J. Green and Kris Durham make better ones...
  • A mini flea-flicker, incomplete...
  • A conservative enough, but perfectly executed fly route for a touchdown.  Notice the Auburn defender.  He never gets his head around (because it was probably spinning from the two previous plays).

With all of the talent we have at Tight End and Receiver, our creativity on offense is and has been too pedestrian.    Ultimately, defense wins games and championships, but a little bit of thinking "outside the box" on offense would certainly be welcome again.  The WildDawg does not count.  That's just a foolish play.  Just my .02 cents.  Your thoughts?

Oh, and I miss Larry Munson.
