Thursday College Football/NFL/Veterans Day Game Night Open Comment Thread

I missed last night’s fog-bound Bowling Green-Miami (Ohio) game, but I won’t be forgetting tonight’s critical Big East tilt between the Connecticut Huskies and the Pittsburgh Panthers, as the Pitt-UConn clash serves as an appetizer for real football this weekend’s rivalry showdown on the Plains.

Also, for those of you who are into that sort of thing, I hear there’s some pro game on tonight, too. Feel free to talk about all of it here in this special Veterans Day edition of the Thursday night open comment thread!

Well, since no one else is commenting...

… I’ll just comment on the latest news about the Plains Newton. Kenny Rogers was quoted on a radio show today not only confirming John Bond’s allegations, but also offering a bit of new information.

Rogers stated that the pater familias of the Newton family specifically mentioned money during a meeting with both Rogers and some Mississippi State coaches in attendance, at which time the MSU coaches recoiled and said they, “didn’t want to have anything to do with that.”

The Tiglesmen and their fans are firmly burying their heads in the sand on this one, refusing to acknowledge that the light at the end of the tunnel is, in fact, a freight train speeding at them, even though they’ve felt the rail vibrating and heard a mysterious whistle breaking through the darkness.

In fairness to the Plainsmen, though, they’ve already got 10 wins that must be vacated if Newton is ruled to have broken the rules… you’re already this far down the line, you might as well see if you can get 4 more before you have to vacate them, too.

The ESPN story I linked to wasn't updated with the MSU coaches' story.

That claim by Rogers is stated here, however.

Most people with a measure of both objectivity and common sense know to keep from passing judgment on any allegations until solid, proven facts are known which substantiate the claims. One thing that’s hard to ignore, though, is how very specific Rogers’ allegations are. The following quote is from the CBS Sports link above:

Kenny Rogers told ESPN radio in Dallas on Thursday that when he and Cecil Newton met with two MSU coaches at a hotel in Starkville, Miss., last Nov. 27, one of the coaches said “no, no I don’t want to hear that,” when Cecil Newton asked about the payment for Cam Newton to attend Mississippi State.

I actually heard a clip of that interview, and not only did Rogers state the date, he also specifically said that it was the “Hilton Garden Inn at ____.” I don’t remember the exact location he mentioned… but when he’s naming specific hotels and dates… that’s a whole lot of specific facts for an unproven allegation that is a couple of weeks old (and has gotten a lot of play time already).

I predict that this will not end well for the Tiglesmen.

I'm here...

waiting on the Falcons game to cap off a great veterans day. As far as the Cam Scam goes, where there is smoke there is fire. There is no way Cam sits this weekend because they are so far down the road this season. I plan on attending the game this weekend and I look forward to seeing how CTG handles him…

Kyle, since I know you hate Auburn..

You may have seen this before (and too bad they are bama fans, but it’ll do). But I think given what week it is, it bears another viewing

At least the Stache has a common-sense approach to choosing who gets playing time:

the hot hand stays on the field. Offensive play-calling where a coach leaves in a productive player rather than trying someone or something that doesn’t work? What a novel idea.

Rise Up Falcons!!!

I think the Falcons should permanently switch back to the old uniforms. Bring back the red helmets!! I think that would propel the team into the Super Bowl discussion.

by skigator93 on Nov 11, 2010 10:05 PM EST reply actions

Agreed!

I was very excited when the Falcons announced the retro uniforms were coming back.

Anyone know why the helmet has the gold stripe on it??? (Easy question, I know)

Looks very close to the UGA black uniform with the red helmet, which I still love.

Think it has something to do with some other school in Georgia

I can’t be sure which one :-)

I knew it was a cupcake

Those nerds can’t stand to be the “other” team in the state of Georgia…and they certainly couldn’t let the Falcons have exclusive UGA colors as their own.

I break the other way on this one, skigator93.

I was born in Atlanta in 1968, so the Falcons have been my hometown team my entire life, and it has never ceased to amaze me how many different ways the local NFL squad has managed to screw up red and black.

Upon reading these posts and thinking on it -

I agree – unless the NCAA comes in right now, Cam is playing Saturday – because, what difference does it make at this point?

Well

Looks like the NCAA might recommend Cam to sit based on this new development.

Rogers said he was referred to a Mississippi State booster named Bill Bell. Rogers said he left Bell a message telling him he was with Cecil Newton, who wanted to know if the deal was going to happen.

Bell, when contacted Thursday night by ESPN.com, confirmed Cecil Newton did ask for money in exchange for Cam Newton signing with Mississippi State. Bell said he was contacted by the NCAA about the matter and spoke to an investigator earlier this week.

“That’s all I want to say about it at this point,” Bell said.

It’s about to go nuclear on the Plains, folks. Auburn would be stupid to play Newton if the NCAA recommends sitting him.

If I am Auburn, I don't sit him no matter what. Better to win and roll the dice, than lose and things come out alright.

But hey – live by the sword………….

But if they play him, after

an NCAA recommendation not to, and he’s then found to be ineligible, they face greater sanctions. Besides that, I’m not convinced they need Cam to beat us, are you?

Uh, absolutely
Besides that, I’m not convinced they need Cam to beat us, are you?

Call me biased, but that team is just Cam Newton and some accessories. They lose to Kentucky/Clemson/sakerlina without him. I don’t believe it’s a stretch of the imagination to say they could easily be 7-3/6-4 without him.

In the still-incredibly-unlikely circumstance that Cam Newton does not play...

… Georgia would mop the turf with the Tiglesmen the way they have previously done with Tennessee, Vandy, and Kentucky.

Les Miles says roll the dice

1) Put an ill fitting hat on Gene Chizik

2) Have Newton come out with illegal eye black that reads “Suck it NCAA”.

3) Palm clap.

4) Profit!

The Tiglesmen will keep Newton on the field until the cows... uh, yeah.

They’ve already got 10 wins that they’ll have to vacate if the Plains Newton is declared ineligible… what will they gain by sitting him now?

The only possible scenario that I could see with Cammy sitting is if the NCAA does make the “recommendation” that Auburn sit him out… and that would probably be a call by the AD to prevent the hammer from really coming down. (The NCAA kinda gets a little ornery when you purposely ignore them or try to pretend they just don’t exist… see bama, Ala; and SC, U of.)

by vineyarddawg on Nov 11, 2010 11:57 PM EST up reply actions

Kinda makes you wonder...

If there was any funny business on the Plains, did Cecil Newton accept cattle in lieu of cash?

Bartering may indeed be alive and well in the 21st century.

freaking computers

recommendation is crap. either he is suspended or not. I hate the NCAA – they need to go away. he will play unless told otherwise. like you said – they already have 10 wins with him – what difference does it make?

If they make the recommendation to sit him, and Auburn ignores it, what happens in January? Can Auburn ignore that suggestion and actually play (with or without him) in the championship? Because while it’s all well and good to vacate wins, it strikes me as BS to deny other teams the chance to get those wins by playing an eligible team…

With all that's coming out now...

… I’m going to go out on a limb (but only slightly) and say that with all the clouds around the Tiglesmen now, they could go 13-0 and they would still be no better than 3rd in the final human polls of the regular season. Even though they are currently #2, I highly suspect they would get “Georgia’ed,” and at least one team currently below them would move above them in the final rankings that decide the BCS.

Here's an idea

Maybe you can just beat Auburn with Newton. That way, you won’ thave to listen to “UGA beat Auburn….BUT is was only because……yadda yadda….”

I prefer to play teams at full strength. That way, when my team wins, the only complaints I have to hear is about the officiating.

by skigator93 on Nov 12, 2010 3:54 PM EST reply actions

Yes, but y'all have been winning a lot lately.

I’d’ve enjoyed hearing y’all whine about not having Chris Rainey after losing to Georgia in Jacksonville a lot more than I enjoyed going to overtime with a fully-loaded Florida squad and losing. The whining about Tim Tebow’s bum shoulder in 2007 bothered me not at all; if the Bulldogs beat the Tigers with Cam Newton sitting on the sideline, I will answer any snide comments from the other side of the aisle with the most effective retort in sports: “Scoreboard.”

No excuses from me for 2007

We scored 30 points that year which should have been enough to win. Tebow’s shoulder had nothing to do with us not being able to stop Mr. Moreno….whom I hope can stay healthy by the way, because I drafted him a little high this season!

Good luck against Auburn. We’re hoping we can win tomorrow and get our own crack at them!

by skigator93 on Nov 12, 2010 9:43 PM EST up reply actions

Doesn't really matter at this point...

If we beat them now (with Newton playing) it’ll be because he was distracted.
