BCS National Championship Game Open Comment Thread
It's the last college football game before Labor Day weekend, so let's enjoy it while we can. Join in the fun in the comments below.
Which way are you rooting? Will conference pride win out over having to deal with another SEC fan base that's won a national championship in the 21st century?
Here's hoping we do this again next year with Aaron Murray leading the Bulldogs to victory over Ohio State.
Go 'Dawgs!

i called Alabama week 1
and still do. Texas has a way of stepping up, but there is no doubt their schedule was very weak – especially by way of comparison. I expect to see Colt running around a whole lot – running scared.

Question of the day
How does Cody stack up against Suh, who dominated Texas up front? My personal prediction is a big-time coaching adjustment from TX’s offensive line coach resulting in Cody getting double-teamed most of the time. As a result, some defensive end or Rolando McLain is gonna look real good. The Horns’ line got embarrassed against the Huskers by not adjusting to the the 3/4 with a stud NT, probably not gonna happen in primetime twice.
I'm really conflicted on this one...who to pull for?
I went to grad school at Bama, have a niece that graduated from there as well. I have some good memories during the short time I was in T-Town (during the Bill Curry debacle), and many friends who I keep in touch with. Generally, I pull for the SEC (except Florida and certainly not for Ten-r-see while Kiffin is pooping the bed up there).
Flip a coin…
Hook ’em Horns!

uh, you picked the horns over a school you went too....??
Dave!

I'm a grad student at Tech
Trust me, ain’t that hard.
I have absolutely no allegiances to 'Bama...
and the Dreamland is overrated.
"If we score, we may win. If they never score, we'll never lose."
-Erk Russell
dreamland is a tad overrated - good, but, uh, a dump
"Sometimes, you just can't get rid of a bomb." - batman
Obviously, it's better for the SEC if Bama wins...
… but everybody and their brother thinks the Tide will roll, so that makes me think twice. Texas almost never comes in as a disrespected underdog, but here they are. I think the Horns will be super-motivated, and the historical record certainly doesn’t bode well for Alabama, who are coming into the game with the reigning Heisman Trophy winner.
I’m not exactly “rooting” for Alabama, but I guess I’d prefer that they win. I really think that Texas will win, however.
My rooting interests...
Some drinking buddy of my mom’s taught me to make the Texas “down horns” sign when I was, like, 1 year old. You don’t mess with rooting interests that were given you before you knew not to poop your pants.
Hook ’em.
It's the original gang sign.
"If we score, we may win. If they never score, we'll never lose."

SEC
The Southwestern Conference boycotted Tebow in the Heisman voting to favor McCoy and Bradford. I hope Bama stomps a mudhole in their asses as big as Texas.
For the second time in my life...
I say “Roll Tide, Roll”
It makes me physically ill, but it must be done.
Also, I figured ESPN would find a way to bring Pete Carroll and USC into the conversation. On the other hand, maybe Pete’s auditioning for a job if the Trojans finish in the middle of the Pac 10 again next year.

I wish this game was played on New Year's night.
At this rate this game will played sometime in mid-February.

well, all the commentary is stale
but i will say Herby and Musenberger do pretty good.
BTW – how does the Rose Bowl get two Rose Bowls, thats a good deal!
"Sometimes, you just can't get rid of a bomb." - batman
It may be stale...
… but at least they’re not calling their first college game of the year.
God, I hate Thom Brenneman. (Pronounced with a soft “th,” of course, just to angry up the blood.)
Just getting in . . .
rooting for the SEC because we may need the “SEC superiority” argument one day. I hope.
Predicting 20-13 Texas, with a late ’Bama turnover figuring heavily in the outcome.
I was thinking along those lines as well...
For some reason I think the downtime affects ’Bama more.
"If we score, we may win. If they never score, we'll never lose."

they are closing schools here for the cold. no precip, just cold and wind.
"Sometimes, you just can't get rid of a bomb." - batman
I think all our schools are closed as well
same reason – too stinking cold!

getting my checkride tomorrow...
It is going to be below zero with the wind chill when I show tomorrow. Perfect checkride day!
I think Erk Russell could have kicked Clint Eastwood and John Wayne's butts with a corn cob and one hand tied behind his back. GATA!
Good luck with that, AeroDawg!
I’m a private pilot, and my checkride days have been some of the most exciting and nerve-wracking days of my life.
Godspeed and good luck.

Sad to admit this -

Getting Keith Jackson to do the coin toss . . .
. . . almost makes up for getting Josh Groban to sing the national anthem.
Almost.
Go 'Dawgs!
Hit the post button instead of preview.
See Houston, Whitney – Super Bowl XXV, 1991. Now that’s how you perform the national anthem.
I prefer Smokey Robinson . . .
. . . but I see your point.
I never forgave Whitney for what she did to that Dolly Parton song.
Go 'Dawgs!
Can't argue with you there.
I honestly don’t like Whitney that much, either. That Super Bowl performance was her most shining moment for me.
Good to see Keith Jackson...
wish he’d go to work for the SEC on ESPN. He’s a Bama homer, but loves the conference.

Hey, how about that...
… a directional kick by Texas. Did they hire Fabris over the last couple of weeks?
(Yes, I know Fabris is at Louisville now.)
alabama comes out tight after Nick decides to take the ball....ouch

Still fun to say it….

-Erk Russell
Who do they think they are?
Boise State?
"If we score, we may win. If they never score, we'll never lose."
-Erk Russell
That INT was actually bad for Texas.
It cost them about 20 yards of field position. He should have just batted it down.
yes, but hard not to catch a ball coming to you
"Sometimes, you just can't get rid of a bomb." - batman
You're both right
It always maddens me to see a guy pick off a pass on fourth down, but it’s good to have that ingrained in them. It’s like a defensive end who leads the team in sacks; he’s going to get a few offsides penalties along the way.
Go 'Dawgs!
Well Bama certainly looks like they're planning to represent the conference well.

Wow
I’m very forgiving of fakes, because they always look terrible if they don’t work. That, however, was genuinely terrible.
Did Musberger just say . . .
. . . Saban went against his coaching philosophy by pulling a Bellichick move?
I’m not sure that follows.

Dangit...
… the whims of fate are going to cost me my “friendly wager” that Texas would pull the upset.

I know this ain't the Super Bowl...
… but can I just make a comment on this Taco Bell commercial that’s been playing virtually every commercial break during the bowl season?
It’s annoying and I hate it. (Not as much as I hate Florida… but almost.) I want to punch that guy in the face every time he starts talking.
I liked the one
where they were playing “One More Time” by Joe Jackson.

This is why we need to play all bowl games on January 1

yea Kyle, on the same page again
and so, so, so much hype.

it’s turning into the Super Bowl. It’s just plain wrong not having the season wrapped up by midnight on January 1.

Geez, man... everybody just trying to do something crazy early in the game.
Bama faking a punt at their own 20… Texas practically kicking an onside kick…
What next, a drop kick by the backup Texas QB nobody’s ever heard of before?
my Gosh, Alabama with the ball in good field position

So I heard..
I was pretty liquored up that night. Hope I didn’t give out my social security number.
"If we score, we may win. If they never score, we'll never lose."
-Erk Russell
Interesting side note . . .
. . . at the 2008 Alabama game, a guy who was trying to fit two people into one seat came in and said, “We have seats 19 and 20.” I told him my seats were 20 and 21, and, without even making eye contact, he said, “Then we have seats 18 and 19.”
It was the first of many, many things that ticked me off that night, and, when I called my wife on the way home, I teed off on that (among other things), and I got so worked up that I rattled off the section, row, and seats of my season tickets and said, “I know that like I know my Social Security number is . . .” and I proceeded to misstate my Social Security number.
The fact that I forgot my Social Security number but remembered my season ticket seats in Sanford Stadium really, truly tells you everything you need to know about me.

This could get ugly for the Horns. I take back my previous prediction. New prediction: 35-6, Bama.
That's really a damn shame.

Well, I maintain...

It's David Greene's revenge

no kidding
I will not lie… I laughed out loud harder than I have in a long time when I saw that girl in the Boise State band. And then I worried about my possible future damnation when I found out she looked that way because she was blind.

He was a voodoo-practicing major league baseball player, a President that got assassinated because he committed the cardinal sin of hanging around Jack Bauer, and now an insurance salesman… guess he opted to keep taking a step down, eh?
Yeah, but he's working...
and will probably play Obama in the Lifetime Movie about him one day.

It's almost scary to imagine
what would happen if we were all in the same sports bar watching a game.

That SHOULD be arranged.
Next fall, we should all get some designated drivers and meet up at the Eagle Tavern in Watkinsville or something.

10/30 – Jacksonville
11/13 – Auburn

My gut instinct . . .
. . . is to say Mississippi State or Kentucky. I think we’d all be happier with a game we’re likely to win.
Go 'Dawgs!
I'm in.
Don’t pick the Eagle Tavern, though. The name is incredibly misleading, since it’s now in a city and county where it’s illegal to operate a bar. (Restaurants can serve beer and wine by the drink in Watkinsville, but no hard alcohol.)
I’m going to Boulder, so I would vote for a game besides the Colorado game.
Actually...
I was jesting. The Eagle Tavern is a historical site/museum that was built around 1789 along an old stage coach route. When the land grant college that later became UGA was looking for a place to build, Watkinsville was nearly chosen. However, the founding fathers of UGA thought the evilness and general bad vibe that could come from a drankin’ establishment would have a negative effect on prospective students of higher learning. So, the school was built down the road in Athens. For the longest time the only thing Watkinsville had going for it was Booth’s Sundries, Rocket Field, two Golden Pantries and a bootlegger I used to frequent down the old Farmington road who sold beer (at an inflated price) on Sundays. Now, “the ’Ville” has a ton of great restaurants (it’s why my parents got so damn fat) but no bars…which is fine by me. Keeps the riff-raff over in Bogart.
But I would love to meet some of ya’ll in the Classic City, tip a few, and cheer on the road Dawgs. Going to have to get some grass-roots mo’ going on this!
"If we score, we may win. If they never score, we'll never lose."
-Erk Russell
addendum...
The actual lodging facility was built around 1789…the Tavern part opened around 1820…but according to the Oconee county history website, the Eagle Tavern actually existed before 1750. UGA was founded in 1785.
Essentially, the pre-Eagle Tavern which dissuaded the powers-that-be to not locate UGA in Watkinsville, was perhaps the nation’s first drive-up package store. The irony in all of this is that there is 2 package stores in Athens for every student.

I am happy for Alabama, though, and more importantly for the SEC. Remember this, BCS, when a 1-loss Georgia team is competing for a spot in the title game in the not-too-distant future.
Exactly a 1 loss SEC team is much more likely to make the NCG

in Texas’ halftime show song selection? It’s the tune used for the old, “Beef, it’s what’s for dinner” commercials in the ’90s.

It's by Aaron Copland :(

Dawgs are always before anything in the pros...
…but I’ve suffered too much this year. Cheered for the Cowboys as a youngster in Athens, so the seeds for both were planted at an early age.

Yeah, I do hate that term
I even hate it when it’s applied to the Braves, for whom it is much more applicable due to Ted Turner’s widespread broadcasts in cable TV’s infancy.
It did, however, give rise to the “South America’s Team” moniker after all the drug problems surfaced.
I continue to maintain that no one should hate the Dallas Cowboys more than someone who was a Cowboys fan in the Landry/Staubach era, given the way that once-respectable franchise has been sullied since.

I predict he'll go in the draft before Colt.
Which really pisses off the UT fans…until they think about it an kind of agree.

Shipley maybe my second favorite wide out in the nation

I hate it when they call "touchdown!" before the guy actually breaks the plane
It’ll only take a second, Brent. Just wait.

I'm still holding on the fact that Bama wins
If Texas didn’t throw that interception for a touchdown, it would be an interesting game

My wife just got a text message that school is closed. I looked out, and my back porch (Uga statue and all) is covered with a dusting of snow! It was just flurrying (is that a word?) when I drove home.

This just got interesting
I hate it when Brent talks about players “growing up before our eyes.” He does that every game! They’re legal adults, Brent!

Dawg Fans, if we get the man in Dallas to be our next DC
I will be very, very positive this fall. He is exactly the kind of guy i wanted and exactly why i wasnt worried for a mid Jan announcement. Maybe he isnt the guy, but it sure is what i am looking for.

I bow to your wisdom.
Also – Hale reported yesterday – “Yahoo! anonymously sources information that seems to be the common opinion these days that Todd Grantham is going to be Georgia’s next defensive coordinator.”

Actually, 37-21
Not that it matters.
Funny thing is, that’s probably a representative final score, but it was arrived out in a crazy way.
Go 'Dawgs!
that's two Bama and two LSU, and 1 UT and 3 Gator NC's (at a quick count) since UGA 80

or is it it 2 Tenn (UT = Tenn), i kinda blocked out some of the 90s

Tennessee just has the one
Luckiest national title ever.
I put Clint Stoerner in the same category with Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain . . . almost.
Go 'Dawgs!
roger, but you know what my point is - we are underachieving in the last two decades, severely
"Sometimes, you just can't get rid of a bomb." - batman
Granted
All you need to know to know that is that the list of the dozen or so most well-represented college teams in the NFL consists of Georgia and eleven teams that have won national titles in the last 15 years.
Go 'Dawgs!
one cannot measure a program simply by national titles...
…otherwise, there’s only one success and 119 failures every season. Would you honestly trade one miracle national title season for a dozen of abject mediocrity. I know I wouldn’t. Like many things, football is process-based, not product-based. Thank God that CMR walks our sidelines and wins 10 games a year. The only other two programs in the country with that kind of sustained consistency over the past decade are in Austin and LA.
Well said . . . and absolutely correct
This is one of the many reasons I oppose a playoff. The BCS is bad enough already, but the last thing college football needs is a system that makes the national championship even more of a be-all and end-all than it already is. Winning your conference championship, beating your rivals, and winning a major bowl game all count for something, but, with a playoff, you’re either No. 1 or no one.

As the 2009 - 2010 College Football Season draws to a close
I just want to say how much I have enjoyed spending the season here with y’all. It was so much more fun to watch the games with “my people” as Lewis would say. Y’all made a painful season more tolerable. Burdens shared being lighter and all that fun stuff. So thanks for that. Now the long wait til the first kick off on September 4th begins. I’ll bring the brownies!

By the way, if they had time to talk about Mark Ingram’s dad being in prison, they couldn’t have taken two seconds to point out that both defensive coordinators were Georgia grads? Unbelievable!
Thanks for joining in, everyone. Over and out. Stay warm. Good night.

Agreed
That’s an interesting storyline regardless of which school they came from. They fact that their both from UGA makes it interesting to us. But they missed the boat on that one.
