BCS National Championship Game Open Comment Thread

It's the last college football game before Labor Day weekend, so let's enjoy it while we can. Join in the fun in the comments below.

Which way are you rooting? Will conference pride win out over having to deal with another SEC fan base that's won a national championship in the 21st century?

Here's hoping we do this again next year with Aaron Murray leading the Bulldogs to victory over Ohio State.

Go 'Dawgs!

i called Alabama week 1

and still do. Texas has a way of stepping up, but there is no doubt their schedule was very weak – especially by way of comparison. I expect to see Colt running around a whole lot – running scared.

Question of the day

How does Cody stack up against Suh, who dominated Texas up front? My personal prediction is a big-time coaching adjustment from TX’s offensive line coach resulting in Cody getting double-teamed most of the time. As a result, some defensive end or Rolando McLain is gonna look real good. The Horns’ line got embarrassed against the Huskers by not adjusting to the the 3/4 with a stud NT, probably not gonna happen in primetime twice.

I'm really conflicted on this one...who to pull for?

I went to grad school at Bama, have a niece that graduated from there as well. I have some good memories during the short time I was in T-Town (during the Bill Curry debacle), and many friends who I keep in touch with. Generally, I pull for the SEC (except Florida and certainly not for Ten-r-see while Kiffin is pooping the bed up there).

Flip a coin…

Hook ’em Horns!

Obviously, it's better for the SEC if Bama wins...

… but everybody and their brother thinks the Tide will roll, so that makes me think twice. Texas almost never comes in as a disrespected underdog, but here they are. I think the Horns will be super-motivated, and the historical record certainly doesn’t bode well for Alabama, who are coming into the game with the reigning Heisman Trophy winner.

I’m not exactly “rooting” for Alabama, but I guess I’d prefer that they win. I really think that Texas will win, however.

by vineyarddawg on Jan 7, 2010 7:57 PM EST reply actions

My rooting interests...

Some drinking buddy of my mom’s taught me to make the Texas “down horns” sign when I was, like, 1 year old. You don’t mess with rooting interests that were given you before you knew not to poop your pants.

The Southwestern Conference boycotted Tebow in the Heisman voting to favor McCoy and Bradford. I hope Bama stomps a mudhole in their asses as big as Texas.

Also, I figured ESPN would find a way to bring Pete Carroll and USC into the conversation. On the other hand, maybe Pete’s auditioning for a job if the Trojans finish in the middle of the Pac 10 again next year.

Interesting side note . . .

. . . at the 2008 Alabama game, a guy who was trying to fit two people into one seat came in and said, “We have seats 19 and 20.” I told him my seats were 20 and 21, and, without even making eye contact, he said, “Then we have seats 18 and 19.”

It was the first of many, many things that ticked me off that night, and, when I called my wife on the way home, I teed off on that (among other things), and I got so worked up that I rattled off the section, row, and seats of my season tickets and said, “I know that like I know my Social Security number is . . .” and I proceeded to misstate my Social Security number.

The fact that I forgot my Social Security number but remembered my season ticket seats in Sanford Stadium really, truly tells you everything you need to know about me.

Don’t pick the Eagle Tavern, though. The name is incredibly misleading, since it’s now in a city and county where it’s illegal to operate a bar. (Restaurants can serve beer and wine by the drink in Watkinsville, but no hard alcohol.)

I’m going to Boulder, so I would vote for a game besides the Colorado game.

by vineyarddawg on Jan 8, 2010 1:08 AM EST up reply actions

Actually...

I was jesting. The Eagle Tavern is a historical site/museum that was built around 1789 along an old stage coach route. When the land grant college that later became UGA was looking for a place to build, Watkinsville was nearly chosen. However, the founding fathers of UGA thought the evilness and general bad vibe that could come from a drankin’ establishment would have a negative effect on prospective students of higher learning. So, the school was built down the road in Athens. For the longest time the only thing Watkinsville had going for it was Booth’s Sundries, Rocket Field, two Golden Pantries and a bootlegger I used to frequent down the old Farmington road who sold beer (at an inflated price) on Sundays. Now, “the ’Ville” has a ton of great restaurants (it’s why my parents got so damn fat) but no bars…which is fine by me. Keeps the riff-raff over in Bogart.

But I would love to meet some of ya’ll in the Classic City, tip a few, and cheer on the road Dawgs. Going to have to get some grass-roots mo’ going on this!

"If we score, we may win. If they never score, we'll never lose."
-Erk Russell

by DavetheDawg on Jan 8, 2010 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

addendum...

The actual lodging facility was built around 1789…the Tavern part opened around 1820…but according to the Oconee county history website, the Eagle Tavern actually existed before 1750. UGA was founded in 1785.

Essentially, the pre-Eagle Tavern which dissuaded the powers-that-be to not locate UGA in Watkinsville, was perhaps the nation’s first drive-up package store. The irony in all of this is that there is 2 package stores in Athens for every student.

Every SEC football fan is thinking “Eat Mor Longhorn” right about now.

While we’re on the subject, if South Carolina ever makes it to Atlanta on New Year’s Eve, they need to go back to calling it the Peach Bowl, because calling it the Chick-fil-A Bowl would just inspire a lot of “Beat Mor Chikin” T-shirts worn by the other team’s fans.

It did, however, give rise to the “South America’s Team” moniker after all the drug problems surfaced.

I continue to maintain that no one should hate the Dallas Cowboys more than someone who was a Cowboys fan in the Landry/Staubach era, given the way that once-respectable franchise has been sullied since.

Can't help it - again with apologies to Toby Keith

We got winners, we got losers
Chain smokers and boozers
And we got yuppies, we got bikers
We got thirsty hitchhikers
And the girls next door dress up like movie stars
Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar

We got cowboys, we got truckers
Broken-hearted fools and suckers
And we got hustlers, we got fighters
Early birds and all-nighters
And the veterans talk about their battle scars

Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar

[Chorus:]
I love this bar
It’s my kind of place
Just walkin’ through the front door
Puts a big smile on my face
It ain’t too far, come as you are
Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar

I’ve seen short skirts, we got high-techs
Blue-collar boys and rednecks
And we got lovers, lots of lookers
And I’ve even seen dancing girls and hookers
And we like to drink our beer from a mason jar

Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar
Yes I do

I like my truck (I like my truck)
I like my girlfriend (I like my girlfriend)
I like to take her out to dinner
I like a movie now and then

But I love this bar
It’s my kind of place
Just trollin’ around the dance floor
Puts a big smile on my face
No cover charge, come as you are
Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar
Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar

We got divorcees and a big bouncer man
An old jukebox and a real bad band
We got waitresses and we got barflies
A dumb-ass and a wise-guy
If you get too drunk just sleep out in your car

Reason number 672 why

Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar
Play it on out boys
Beer-thirty’s over
Got to take it on home

Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar
I just love it

I will be very, very positive this fall. He is exactly the kind of guy i wanted and exactly why i wasnt worried for a mid Jan announcement. Maybe he isnt the guy, but it sure is what i am looking for.

Granted

All you need to know to know that is that the list of the dozen or so most well-represented college teams in the NFL consists of Georgia and eleven teams that have won national titles in the last 15 years.

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Jan 8, 2010 12:09 AM EST up reply actions

one cannot measure a program simply by national titles...

…otherwise, there’s only one success and 119 failures every season. Would you honestly trade one miracle national title season for a dozen of abject mediocrity. I know I wouldn’t. Like many things, football is process-based, not product-based. Thank God that CMR walks our sidelines and wins 10 games a year. The only other two programs in the country with that kind of sustained consistency over the past decade are in Austin and LA.

by allhailcale on Jan 8, 2010 2:36 AM EST up reply actions

Well said . . . and absolutely correct

This is one of the many reasons I oppose a playoff. The BCS is bad enough already, but the last thing college football needs is a system that makes the national championship even more of a be-all and end-all than it already is. Winning your conference championship, beating your rivals, and winning a major bowl game all count for something, but, with a playoff, you’re either No. 1 or no one.

As the 2009 - 2010 College Football Season draws to a close

I just want to say how much I have enjoyed spending the season here with y’all. It was so much more fun to watch the games with “my people” as Lewis would say. Y’all made a painful season more tolerable. Burdens shared being lighter and all that fun stuff. So thanks for that. Now the long wait til the first kick off on September 4th begins. I’ll bring the brownies!
