Lets talk Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins
This week, one of the biggest stories I have read out of the Senior Bowl has been the emergence of Jeff Owens and Geno Atkins. According to the AJC, both have practiced and played their way into higher draft slots, perhaps as high as the first round. Obviously, this is great news for them, but it is also somewhat astounding. We've long known that these two could be serious players. My question is this; why are these two nearly unblockable now, playing against some of the top linemen in the country, when they were anything but during last season? When comparing their performances from the past season to this past week, something seems to have changed.
I have heard a few different ideas as to why this happened the past day or two, ranging from a lack of motovation to the possibility that they are "workout warriors". I don't buy either of those reasons. I could never see someone who was credited as being such a great leader as Owens performing poorly because he was giving up on a subpar season. Also, as successful as both were in the Senior Bowl itself, they have clearly demonstrated that they can perform on the field. Not to beat a dead horse, but I think that their postseason performance speaks very poorly towards the defensive staff that had been coaching them, and their position coach in particular.
Anybody else have a thought? Am I way off base? Is this just another unanswered question from a lost season?

Did you see that video of Stafford running a game and talking to players in Detroit?
and Vineyarddawg’s answer to that was: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Those players both didnt have their own motivation as well as poor coaching leadership. We know how hot / cold the lines could be. Now it’s on the line to get paid and they stepped up.
CMR needs to learn to sit guys that arent motivated rather than let them play because they have the most skill. A guy on the bench knows he isnt getting scout time and maybe needs to get on it.
Oh, and I don’t think it will be an issue with CTG – he aint no willie.

CTG ain't no Willie, but
Their position coach is still with us. I’m not saying that’s a problem, mind you. And it will be intersting to see how RG takes to the 3-4.

Interesting perspective

We’ll see what the new season brings. Not to disparage either Geno or Jeff, but I am glad we’ve got some younger guys taking over on the line. I think they’ll be out to prove their mettle. I just wonder if Jeff played tentatively because of his knee injury against Georgia Southern in ’08 and if Geno just got tired by the end of the year because of double teams, etc.
I am just thrilled that we aren’t going to be witnessing the defensive status quo in 2010. Whatever happens, the change will be welcome. And if ever a team needed a change, this was it. The question is, will there be a need for more changes after the season ends? Time will tell.

But I thought....
The Senior Bowl was played by Tim Tebow and 21 other Tebow clones…
ESPN kept telling me all about Tebow’s week. I just assumed he was playing every position for both teams.

sorry to get off topic BTW....
I thought all the Football messiah worship would end after he left school. I just felt the need to share my frustration that it will clearly go own well into the next 22nd century.
I would have liked Jeff or Geno to get some national media coverage for their outstanding work during Senior Bowl week.
Nonetheless, thats no excuse to hijack the thread.

Don't worry...
I share your angst. And in the end, Tebow will become his generation’s Danny Wuerffel while Jeff and Geno will go on to bigger and better things in the NFL.
Of course, Tebow will POTUS in 2024, so there’s that.
