Georgia Bulldogs at South Carolina Gamecocks Basketball Game Night Open Comment Thread

Georgia Bulldogs at South Carolina Gamecocks, Jan 30, 2010 7:00 PM EST

The South Carolina Gamecocks are coming off of what probably is the biggest win in their program's history. The Georgia Bulldogs are coming off of a stomping administered to them on the road by the accursed Florida Gators. Does that mean the Classic City Canines are in a position to upend the Palmetto State Poultry in a basketball season in which no one seems to be able to cope with success?

I hope so, but, once again, I'm not holding my breath until the Fox Hounds prove they can win on the road. A fired-up Mark Fox drew a technical foul in Gainesville, so I'm sure he has the troops fired up for this critical conference test. Whether the Hoop Dogs win or lose, however, you are welcome to join the conversation in the comments below.

For what it's worth . . .

. . . I was at my son’s Upward basketball game this morning (by the way, Thomas earned a grey star for offense and scored a goal in a 26-20 victory in which his team, the Bulldogs, overcame an early 10-0 deficit) when a friend of mine (whose son plays on a team in the same league) told me he had two tickets to the game tonight and couldn’t go.

I wasn’t in a position to take them, and (after attending the 1996 and 2000 Georgia-South Carolina football games in Williams-Brice Stadium) I am disinclined to go to sporting events in Columbia, but, man, it would have been nice. . . .

Man, I'm glad . . .

. . . I didn’t take those tickets.

Being in Columbia with gloating South Carolina fans? Not fun. They’re like Georgia Tech fans, minus about 75 IQ points.

Beat those Cocks!

I think we match up better with SCAR — particularly because 2 of their big men are gone for the year. Nonetheless, our ability to cover Downey in the first 5 minutes or so should tell us everything we need to know.

Good points RedCrake . . .

I think that if we can keep the turnovers to a minimum and play our game in the front court, we should be in good shape. I’d also like to see Trey Thompkins stay out of foul trouble. We don’t need to be without him on the road if this one goes down to the wire. I’m counting on South Carolina to come out a bit soft after the kentucky victory.

On an unrelated note, you’ll be pleased to know that Georgia has picked up its second football commitment for the class of 2011, Griffin H.S. safety Corey Moore. Moore is 6’2 and 195 pounds midway through his junior season. He could ultimately grow into a linebacker or stay at safety.

On a somewhat related note, mea culpa for obscuring the open comment thread. I think this is the first time Kyle and i have ever set two posts to automatically appear at the same time, which is kind of amazing given the number of posts on this site over the past 2+ years.

Seriously...

all you need to really know is that

A: Albert Jackson is good on defense, not so good on offense (#34 in your program)
B: Trey Thompkins (#33) should handle the ball at least once in every possession, unless it’s a fast transition
C: Travis Leslie is going to have to register with the FAA.
D: You can’t twist off a Sam Adams with your bare hands.

Halftime Stats:

Field Goals:
Georgia: 14 of 31 (45.2%)
South Carolina: 15 of 33 (45.5%)

3-Pt. Field Goals:
Georgia: 2 of 6 (33.3%)
South Carolina: 5 of 9 (55.6%)

Free Throws:
Georgia: 8 of 13 (61.5%)
South Carolina: 4 of 7 (57.1%)

Prior to the final five minutes, the Bulldogs were leading in all three of those categories, but they let it get away from them at the end.

More Halftime Stats:

Free Throws:
Georgia: 8 of 13 (61.5%)
South Carolina: 4 of 7 (57.1%)

Rebounds:
Georgia: 17 (7 offensive/10 defensive)
South Carolina: 18 (8 offensive/10 defensive)

Turnovers:
Georgia: 4
South Carolina: 7

Points Off Turnovers:
Georgia: 9
South Carolina: 8

Points in the Paint:
Georgia: 20
South Carolina: 16

Bench Points:
Georgia: 6
South Carolina: 9

Second-Chance Points:
Georgia: 6
South Carolina: 10

Again, all of those numbers were better for the Bulldogs before the final five minutes prior to the break. I’ve got a bad feeling about this. This one could get away from us quickly.

How the hell did we lose this game? We are clearly the better team.

That is crazy. It is never good to lose to a podunk bunch from east of us in anything.

How did that happen? Some scub name Muldrow has the game of his life and a horrible shooting team shoots 53% from 3? That is crazy. We are much better than they are and I cannot believe we pee’d this one away.

Can anybody who knows basketball better than I do...

tell me why we didn’t put anybody on the line for Ware’s FT at the end? I get that he’s a good shooter, but still — we essentially conceded the ball back to SC with almost no time left. I assume we wanted to have guys back to prevent Carolina going the other way, but already down one with three seconds left, who cares? We had to have a rebound there.

Oh well. I’m never happy with just keeping it competitive, but if we show ANY improvement in Year Two, we can win a ton of games. Sure hope Thompkins and Leslie come back…

by NMdawg on Jan 30, 2010 9:09 PM EST reply actions

That's a good question...

and i’ll be interested to see what coach Fox says about it. Hang with this team, though.. These tough losses are tough lessons and will bode well for the future. And if Leslie and/or Thompkins returns the future is indeed very bright.

This is a good team. They just can’t close. We need Alec Baldwin’s character from Glengarry/Glen Ross to give ’em a pep talk, methinks.

Just skimming through the comments . . .

. . . I scanned by that picture and momentarily thought it was Dale Cooper giving the lecture outdoors in front of the blackboard in “Twin Peaks.”

By the way, Alec Baldwin’s pep talk involved telling everyone they didn’t deserve coffee and ought to be fired. I don’t see that going over too well.

I hope you’re right, Dave, but I remember Willie Martinez’s defense sustaining some tough losses that taught some tough lessons in 2008. They did not bode well for 2009.

Granted, there are many ways to attack that analogy, which I hope is incorrect, but I have abandoned all hope that sucking now is a prelude to succeeding later. Sucking now may merely be a harbinger of sucking yet to come.

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Jan 30, 2010 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

No one is getting fired...

but if the team is not rewarded with an espresso on the ride home, that’s okay.

One of Willie’s well chronicled criticisms was that he never adjusted. At least Fox makes adjustments on-the-fly. We can’t help it if they launch bombs from Ft. Sumter that strip the net.

A wise man once wrote:

“To do is to be,
To be is to do,
Do be do be do.”

That really has nothing to do with sucking, but I really believe this team will suck less than they sucked tonight or last Wednesday night-next Wednesday night. And next year, the suck factor will decrease in it’s suckitude provided we don’t lose a few key players to the pro’s early, which would indeed suck. It’s too early to say if past sucking is a harbinger to future sucking for this team, but I really believe that sucking is all relative (and some relatives suck), and as long as we keep the overall sucking to a minimum and keep playing hard every night without sucking too much wind, our long basketball national nightmare won’t suck nearly as bad as it has traditionally sucked in the past.

I hope you're right, Dave

I’m about one more bad week of Georgia athletics away from writing a posting asking what we possibly could have done to deserve this. Aside from the Lady Dogs’ resurgence after a fairly lengthy (by Andy Landers’s standards) downcycle, we now suck at everything.

I will grant that, in the midst of all the suckage, there are glimmers of hope that the day may come when it will cease to suck, but I’ve been burned one time too many to believe it until I see it. When you expect the worst, your only options are to be proven correct or pleasantly surprised, but, damn, I’m ready to be pleasantly surprised just once . . . about something to do with Georgia athletics. I’m about ready to change the name of the site to “Suck Sports.”
