Why Ruffin McNeill Should Not Be the New Head Coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders
Lubbock is no stranger to controversy, having welcomed Bobby Knight after the militaristic disciplinarian's latest lapse of self-discipline in a career defined by such lapses saw him ousted by the Indiana Hoosiers. However, the Texas Tech Red Raiders presently are at the center of a firestorm in which no one comes across looking like the good guy.
In that climate, is it really in the school's best interests to hire a head coach whose first name is a penalty?
Get him to change his name to Legal Hit McNeill and he'd be perfect for the job, though.

You asked for it . . .
Leaving insightful football commentary and analysis to other people since 2006.
If McNeill doesn't get the TT Head Coach job...
…does he become a candidate for our DC job? And if so, do we want him?
And with recent activity in Lubbock...
Tommy Tuberville has interviewed today on campus of TTU. Seeing as Tubs is a coach with a defensive background who occasionally (but not always) was the defensive play-caller of his team, wouldn’t that render Grimace without a job? If Tubs is hired, my supposition is that Ruffin is out.
So my question remains, does he become a candidate for our DC job? And if so, do we want him?
I think hiring a guy whose first name is a penalty is the last thing our defense needs . . .
. . . but it would be better than hiring, for instance, Personal Foul McDougal.
In all seriousness, I haven’t followed the man’s career closely enough to draw a bead on him, but I will say that it sure seemed like Texas Tech was involved in a lot of shootouts. Of course, Will Muschamp’s Texas defense gave up a boatload of points to the Red Raiders in 2008, and I’d be thrilled if Will could be lured home (which, of course, he couldn’t).
