I think those takeaways come basically with guys being in position to make those plays when they come about. I think you put yourself in position by being fundamentally sound and that's one of the things I bring to the table with those guys on the back end. It's just really for those guys to master the technique that we're asking them to play and to be fundamentally sound that when it comes time in the game to have the opportunity to run, to make a play, to make an interception, to strip a ball or pick up a loose ball, fundamentally we're prepare from practice through reps and emphasis and those things.

Also, for what it's worth . . .
. . . Scott Lakatos is an old friend of Todd Grantham’s and here is what he had to say about his relationship with Mark Richt:
We just met and spent some time this past weekend together. My relationship was with Todd. I know Todd was trying to get me hooked up with Coach Richt, so we had a chance to spend some time together. We’ve had a chance to talk over the past few days and gotten to know each other a little bit. He seems like obviously a very successful coach.
Clearly, Coach Richt said what he meant and meant what he said. He fired a close friend, hired a qualified defensive coordinator after a very deliberate search, trusted Coach Grantham’s judgment when assembling a defensive staff, and went outside his own circle of acquaintances in the coaching community to hire a new secondary coach.
Go get that list of gripes about Mark Richt you made after the Kentucky game. How many of those criticisms has he answered resoundingly since then?

Fundamentals
I think a large part of why we were all so frustrated with CWM is the absolute lack of fundamentals the last couple of seasons. It wasn’t the difficult stuff that was such a problem, but the simple fundamentals. How many times did we see unnecessary fouls because the players were undisciplined? How many times did they miss opportunities because of the fundamentals? It wasn’t as much that his schemes were lacking (though they were) but simply our guys did not seem to have mastered the basics of playing defense in the SEC.

Exactly
That was particularly true in the turnover area this year. While the offense was positively awful about giving the ball away, the defense routinely failed to be in a position to scoop up a loose football or pick off an errant pass when the opportunity presented itself.

And we got SO tired of hearing
“sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way.” Instead of what they should have said which was, we routinely fail to be in a position to make a play when we have an opportunity.

Agreed, agreed, agreed!!!!
All of those comments are true. Fundamental play is a key, having sufficient athleticism helps too. Playing fundamentally, I believe, will cause a team, a person, a player, to create their own luck. I believe Coach Wooden said luck is where oppotunity meets preparation.
As the old saying goes . . .
“the harder I work, the luckier I get.”
There were a lot of instances this season of our coverage just being awful. Linebackers were constantly in the wrong spots in zone coverage. Tight ends went uncovered. Coach Lakatos is right. The threshold requirement for making interceptions is to be around the ball with your body positioned so as to make a play on it.
