Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Coach Mark Richt - the next chapter

After a decade of painful memories involving "he's a bulldog" Coach Goff and "he's a great recruiter" Coach Donnan, UGA decided to get a little (read, a lot) more serious and search for a head coach that had raw talent & potential, and a chance to grow over time.  A hire that could be in place working more than just a few years in the "mercenary world" of the modern football era; someone that could give a decade or more of service.  A fascinating aspect about college football, and many of college sports is that it takes years of putting things into place to make runs.    This seems to go against the flood of fans that want instant results instead of a long term program.   Ultimately, as much as we may want a national championship, what you want is a team that can make runs.  We could argue endlessly about the percentage of luck involved, but no matter how you cut it, you need a solid, well rounded, well coached team and then a chunk of luck.   There is no control over a starting playmaker getting hurt, an odd recruiting year where you get stars but not the lineman you need (a perpetual UGA problem in my opinion) or a year where everything goes right but you lose to that one team in Jacksonville that screws it all up.

It's hard to be in the SEC East.   It's hard to win a national championship.   However, my alma mater should be able to make consistent runs with what we have.   It seems we are back on track for that once again.

CMR came in the door in 2001 and motivated us all with a great first season going 8-4 and gave Larry Munson an opportunity to utter another enduring line "We just stepped on them with a hob nailed boot" which ushered in a decade of a lot, let's face it, a lot, of wins.  Following that we were damn hard on him to start - giving not one bit of slack over the time out call (oops, we were out of time outs) in the Auburn game that year.  But CMR did something special:  he didn't place blame, he didn't cry, he sucked it up in the face of some really unfair treatment, and instead went 13-1 with an SEC championship and a Sugar Bowl victory the following year.    After 2006, another down year, he rebounded yet again in 2007, going 11-2 and beating the absolute tar out of Hawaii in the Sugar bowl, finishing AP # 2.

That's the kind of man he is.  Sports are a wave of successes and failures.  One measure of the man, the team, and the program is the response to those failures.   After a highly disappointing 2008 and a very lack luster 2009, Coach Richt is at it again, quietly, professionally removing 3 defensive coaches, one of whom is a good friend, and beginning a now much more powerful national search amongst the top coaches in the nation to find our next defensive staff.  Again, the pundits and naysayers can't wait a day to start suggesting he was failing, our program wasn't worthy, everyone else had their coaches in place but Georgia.  So what is Coach Richt's response?  He hires one of the finest defensive coaches in the nation.  Then he backed that up 3 days later with hiring a stellar secondary coach.  Because in the dog eat dog world of college football, particularly in the SEC, that's how you achieve more of those waves of success, by riding out the storm with grace and determination, sticking to your guns, accepting responsibility, and rising to the task once again.

To begin this new decade and new chapter of the Mark Richt era of UGA football, the future looks bright once again.  If he stays on track, you can expect a lot of wild fun, emotional victories, and a really good chance at a trip to Atlanta.   In the end, one lackluster year is easily worth the next three years Coach Richt is going to put in place for more runs at the East, the SEC, and a National Championship.  And perhaps, this round, lady luck might just shine our way.

GO DAWGS!

Tanker,

You have a Myy in there too but we all get the point. Very well put and I think we are all looking foward to what next season brings. Just a quick disclaimer on my previous post, I’m married with 2 little girls and perhaps another Dawg fan on the way. Just didn’t want to give anyone the wrong idea…

well put...

I believe we win the east and scare the crap out of saban in Atlanta this year. Maybe win it all.

Slow down now Dawg fans...

We have a completely untested QB, no matter who starts. Not ready for SEC speed just yet. We are young in the WR, RB and TE positions. O-line is still a question mark, and let’s not even get into that whole S&C rumors situation.

We have a new DC and staff, new scheme, no one we can be sure of on the D-line or in the expanded LB corps, and raw youth in the D backfield.

Our schedule remains the same brutal SEC East gauntlet as always, and though a couple of extra “weak” non-conference games this season, nothing is ever certain.

That said….WE ARE SO GONNA GATA AND WIN BIG BABY!!! GO U HAIRY DAWGS!!!!

Well Ausdawg85

The QB situation has never sat well with me, but CMR couldn’t exactly come out and say “Cox isn’t that good and we are a lot better in the future if we redshirt our freshman.” So, it is a little understandable. Looking at the roster, we arent that young relatively speaking in the positions you list – sophmore is the new junior afterall. Our RB core is solid, and we could use another WR but somone is likely to step up.

As I stated in other posts – I think the new Defensive staff can have immediate positive impacts – scheme is secondary to the huge fundamental issues we had. Based on CTGs ideas and MaconDawg’s takes – I am inclined to believe Coach Grantham may really move some guys around.

As for being young – its college football. There will almost always be more underclassman than uppers, and nowadays not that many seniors. Its achieving balance that is critical. Most every other team out there feels young or new as well.

For the SEC East, it’s tough, but it’s as open as ever. THe SEC doesn’t look to be as strong next fall. THe key is we have a chance – and we have the components. I personally would like a 10 win season with a win against florida – and a bowl win.

Mostly, my point is we are revamped yet again – and we have a lot to look forward too.

I am officially the only one curbing my enthusiasm

It’s not because I want to do so, mind you, but someone has to keep an even keel.

If you expect the worst, you’ll always be proven right or pleasantly surprised.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go worry about the Vanderbilt game. . . .

kyle, if our opponent comes out of the tunnel game one and goes yard - I am right back to where I was

but for a while, I want to enjoy hopeful enthusiasm, I havent had it in a while

I'm with you

Don’t get me wrong . . . I’m optimistic and I’m all on board for these hires.

We just don’t need to be talking crazy about winning the SEC, or even the East, until we’re shown something on the field.

2008 made me gun shy. I believe these changes represent real improvements, but I need to see progress before I’m prepared to believe in it.

besides Kyle - I got exactly what I wanted

I am either going to be very happy in the next years or eating a lot of crow on DawgSports.com – because our lastest two Defensive hires are perfectly what I was looking for. So, I got to be getting while the getting’s good!

this was a horribly edited post at first, and I cleaned it up out of embarrasment after kyle hung it

And getting hung on the main page is cool enough – but i was referenced in a couple of other blog spots, which was really shocking. I really thank you for the intense clapping.

Wasn't there some thought

that went something like “we should move Richard Samuel to LB”? How do you guys feel that helps or hurts our chances with the new D scheme and how do you think it affects the O?

by EricBDawg on Jan 19, 2010 11:07 PM EST reply actions

Coach Gata

He is certainly saying the right things. Ranking the players 1-50 and getting playmakers on the field. Aggressive…relentless. Gotta love it. Something tells me he would have played rambo instead of B Evans. Coach Lactose has some real talent to work with. Smith, Boykin and Cuff are talented. Rambo, Cummings and Pugh are also pretty talented. Plus we have Ogletree and Jakar Hamilton…he has guys to work with…cubbard is not bare.
There is definitely enough to get us excited. QB is the key…10 int’s or less and we should have a really good year. 9-10 wins. South Carolina is the key this year.

i would go to 1 INT a game - 12 INTs for the season.

you can only expect so much from a fresh starter that is not a 5th year senior. Mainly, I would like to see a, oh, 50% improvement in give aways.

As this post was referenced in other blog reports - i say - kyle should bump it!

Seriously though: I woke up that morning, sat in my leather chair and knocked this out. And it was horribly edited – and I thank Kyle for posting it anyhow. I promptly went back and cleaned up a lot of it. It just shows ya, coffee gets you going, but it doesn’t mean you are fully refreshed!
