I’ve got a great deal of respect for Coach Richt and the job he has done there and the University of Georgia will also have a special place in my heart. Not only did I play there, but my wife played basketball there and we have a lot of friends at UGA.
At the end of the day, I just feel like this is where I am supposed to be and this is a special time to be at the University of Alabama.
Straight from the horse's mouth. (I don't know what it is with me today . . . equine metaphors, Bill Murray quotations, bad grammar. I'm all out of sorts.)

Hereafter
I shall refer to him as Anakin and leave it at that.
Both SEC teams from the state of Alabama
are running a close race for third on the list of Teams-I’d-Rather-Sit-Through-A-Celine-Dion-Heavy-Metal-Concert-Than-Root-For.
I’ll root for them against UT and UF, and probably for the MNC, but aside from that…. But again, it’s personal right now. Give it a few weeks, a solid DC hire, and a few gallons of liquor and I’ll probably change my tune.

Thats a bit harsh
I mean, I can’t fault him for staying. He is learning from probably the best defensive coach in football. If Smart feels like he needs some more time as an apprentice before he heads out on his own, then he is making the right call. I firmly believe he would be well served by coordinating a defense without Saban there before he takes a head coaching job, but that’s just me. If he things this is best for his career, then I can’t give him the Dead To Me treatment. Besides, Spurrier is already Darth Vader. Calling somebody else Anakin just wouldn’t make sense.
Yes, it's personal but
I have to agree with PWD here in that he KNEW this was coming weeks ago. He could have waved off then, or any time before now. I don’t necessarily believe the claim that he signed a “term sheet” and then backed out, but IF that’s true….. Words escape me
Agreed on the Spurrier analogy, but didn’t we decide that he’s more comedic genius than evil genius these days? As we all remember, as long as there’s an apprentice the Sith live on….

My thoughts
are not postable for public viewing. I shall go congratulate the boss.

Hmmm....maybe there is something to that
Head Coach in waiting (I know, I know…it was blogger propaganda). But, still….

I don't think so
I know Saban is liable to leave for any head coaching job anywhere as long as the pay is good enough, but that whole head coach in waiting thing only makes a lick of sense if the current head coach is nearing retirement. Rich Brooks and Joker Phillips? Fine by me. Mack Brown and Will Muschamp? Not so much. Richt or Saban and anybody? Not buying that for one hot second.
So basically,
he’s saying that he loves UGA, but he thinks that he will improve as a coach more under Saban, as well as get a better initial head coaching job by staying at Alabama. He’ll have more talent to work with and will have a better chance at winning another national championship. It would have been great to have him come, but you can’t really fault his logic.
That being said, I do disagree with the way he handled the situation. This is now a PR nightmare for Georgia. To recruits, we were just turned down by a UGA alumnus when we offered to double his salary, give him complete control of the defense and allow him to bring in his choices for assistants. I don’t blame Kirby for listening to the offer, but I do blame him in allowing the situation to turn into something this huge. He may still have an inroad or two to Athens, but they’ll definitely be lined with speed traps.
Oh…and I highly doubt he’s looking forward to his next trip home to Bainbridge.
Welcome to the internet culture. If you take 48 hours to make a life altering decision you’ve waited “too long.”
very fair point mdhenshaw
but – based on some other posts – Kirby new he was being looked at for weeks, saw this coming and perhaps could have turned it off a little quicker. It does at least appear he waited for a monster offer and then waited to see what Bama offered. And we dont know what Bama offered yet, but i bet it was at least a 25% raise

In case you didn't notice, the last month has been kind of eventful for the Alabama staff.
I’d say it’s pretty likely that Smart wanted to see what happened in Pasedena before deciding what to do.
What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

Two points
One-apparently, they weren’t aiming this high. I would rather swing and miss going for the best than to settle immediately to avoid a long wait
Two-their NFL target was a part of a team that missed the playoffs. I don’t like the fact that Dallas is winning in the playoffs, but I would rather hire a coach from a team whose defense is still playing in January.
Who?
No offense to the guy, but I’d never heard of him so it’s not like UF was swinging for the fences like we are. And they don’t really have to; MOST of thier fan base will be somewhat understanding if the new guy doesn’t live up to his predecessor (who got a HC gig) with all the talent they’re losing.
And I see below that SG and I are on the same page. So, um, what he said.

It would be very helpful if CMR did a 15 minute presser and stop the smoke and mirrors on this a little
he probably couldnt/wouldnt say much, but at least he could calm the seas and provide some leadership. Afterall, we just offered 700k to a former UGA guy and got turned down. We appeared somewhat desporate.

Man this is disappointing
I haven’t felt this bad since the Kentucky game (my last game as a student btw). I know the success of this search will be determined by success on the field, but right now it just feels like we’ve been shown up by a conference rival again. It’s going to be fun to see how Bradley, Schultz, and the rest of the clowns at the AJC spin this.

Do yourself a favor
Don’t read the Journal-Constitution. They weren’t that good when Grizzard was there and they’ve been awful ever since.
Go 'Dawgs!
but on the plus side
the douchebag dean of georgia sportswriters no longer pens his hateful bile columns for them anymore.
