Kirby is going to be staying here at the University of Alabama with us.

From the mouth of Nick Saban. Well, crap. (Hat tip: bammer.) This is what I get for writing the "welcome home" posting before the announcement!

Yea. Bad news: McClain is going pro. Good news: Smart is staying.

I hope you guys find a good DC (just not from Bama’s staff!). I’d love to play someone besides UF in the SEC championship, and I’d rather it not be UT!

Same as Miami?

I mean, didn’t he say “I’m staying at Miami, I haven’t talked to the University of Alabama” or something to that effect?

The man doesn’t have the best track record for being “truthful” and “trustworthy”…

by LucasA on Jan 11, 2010 3:00 PM EST reply actions

That's different

When he said he was staying at Miami, he planned to stay at Miami, but circumstances changed.

Kirby got this offer a couple of days ago, Alabama said they’d do what they had to do to keep him, and the Armani Bear wouldn’t have made a definitive statement unless the deal was done.

It’s over. We lost. Dang.

I know better than to do the postgame writeup before the clock hits triple-zeroes. . . .

Well, then...

… I would have liked to have Kirby, but if he doesn’t want to come, then we move on. As tankertoad and others have pointed out, there are many other qualified candidates.

To be honest, I just want to have somebody as the DC. We need to have some stability here.

by vineyarddawg on Jan 11, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

There are....

I just hate for 2010 to start on such a crappy note. I was hoping that was left behind in 2009. Oh well, at least Evans’ last hire seems to be working out (he wasn’t our first choice either).

by RedCrake on Jan 11, 2010 3:11 PM EST up reply actions

We didn't lose

The end game is not the hire. It is wins and losses on the field. Just because Kirby said no, then yes, and now no again, that doesn’t mean that wins and losses will be affected for either team. It just means we still don’t know who the DC will be in 2010.

Personally, I think this is ideal for Richt. I don’t think Kirby was the guy he really wanted. I could be wrong, but now Kirby is the bad guy, and Richt can go out and get Grantham or whomever is still on his radar without the fans comparing the hire to the myth that Kirby had become.

So, for me, this may be a win… although bittersweet.

The dude abides.

by imarealist on Jan 11, 2010 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

who says how Kirby fairs without Nick? We gave him the chance to “come home to Mama” and he chose to stay with his daddy……

by Lakepoets on Jan 11, 2010 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

I don't begrudge him his choice

Right now, being the defensive coordinator for Alabama is more prestigious and more likely to lead to a head coaching spot in a year or two than being the defensive coordinator for Georgia. I don’t hold it against him any more than I held the “funeral” remark against him in 2008. He made a choice that makes sense for him, even if it isn’t the one I wanted him to make. He’s still a damn good ’Dawg.

Agreed.

I can’t quite figure out what is going on with this search. I thought being a UGA DC would be a prime coaching gig as far as assistants are concerned, and with the money we’re presumably offering, I don’t understand why we keep getting turned down.

This is very frustrating.

I’ve never met an ACC fan who hasn’t used that line…usually after an ass kicking. I have not to my knowledge ever worked for anyone from the ACC. As a matter of fact, I think most of my bosses came from non-AQ conference schools.

And if your school stinks at football and you don’t have the sense to root for someone else…. and as you say, you are my boss…. why are you surfing UGA blogs at 3 in the afternoon? That’s real ACC logic.

Strange situation...

Smart stays at Alabama under Saben’s shadow. That’s a better situation than coming to Georgia and getting the credit for defensive turnaround. Maybe he thinks it’s not a “simple turnaround.”

by mdhenshaw on Jan 11, 2010 3:11 PM EST reply actions

Alabama is losing a lot of starters on defense, but we’re pretty loaded on talent. If our defense does really well this year, he will get a lot of credit for that. I can see him being a very hot prospect for a head coaching job. Possibly even the UGA job if Richt doesn’t improve. It may seem absurd, but look at what happened to Tubberville and Fulmer.

Again with the Richt firings

This is not gonna happen. Not. Gonna. Happen.

Even if your wildest dreams come true, and Richt leaves for whatever reason, Smart has burned every bridge twixt here and Tuscaloosa, so that’s also NEVER. GONNA. HAPPEN.

It was nice knowing you, Kirby. Your status as member of the Bulldog Family has been revoked.

by imarealist on Jan 11, 2010 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think that's fair

Viewed objectively, he made a sensible decision. Right now, the Nick Saban coaching tree is considerably more impressive than the Mark Richt coaching tree.

I hope we don’t need a head coach for a while, but I’m not writing off Kirby Smart over this.

by T Kyle King on Jan 11, 2010 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

I'm curious, realist . . .

. . . do you think Auburn should oust Vince Dooley from the family because he rejected their offer to remain at Georgia in 1980?

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Jan 11, 2010 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

Yes.

He means far more to Georgia at this point than Auburn, no? He is an adopted son of Georgia. Had he left for Auburn and coached there for another ten years, then who knows, but he’s basically as Georgia as Munson or Uga at this point.

The dude abides.

by imarealist on Jan 11, 2010 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

All right, fair enough

I disagree (I’m pretty sure Auburn fans are fond of Vince’s 11-13-1 record against the Plainsmen), but I understand where you’re coming from. Thanks.

For the record, I’ll still applaud for Kirby Smart when and if he’s ever at the 50 yard line for the anniversary of some Georgia team on which he played, but now it’s time to move on. I hope we never have occasion to call him about a job, because it would require making him our head coach, but, should that day come, I certainly wouldn’t want Damon Evans to lose his number.

I’m so out of sorts, I’m ending sentences with prepositions right and left. The next thing you know, I’ll be splitting my infinitives.

I promise

There are worse things to be guilty of. Than to casually split infinitives, I mean. Or even to write in sentence fragments.

by NCT on Jan 11, 2010 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

Auburn still considers Dooley their own...

… and if/when Richt is fired, don’t be surprised if Smart gets a call.

by rxmaster on Jan 11, 2010 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

It is much more likely

that Smart becomes the head coach at Alabama than UGA. Seriously, now, how long is Saban gonna stay now that he as a MNC there?

by Lakepoets on Jan 11, 2010 3:36 PM EST up reply actions

Had Smart just said thanks, but no thanks...

then that’s one thing. If he were perfectly happy with his current situation and had no desire to come, then he could have given Richt a handshake and a smile, and all would be well. But, basically agreeing in principle, signing a term sheet, going back to Tuscaloosa, and then changing his mind is entirely different.

He has every right to change his mind and make the decision that is in the best interest of his professional aspirations. But, he could have done that without the proverbial spit-in-the-face of his alma mater. Using UGA’s opening for a pay raise is a quick way to lose your hometown fans.

The dude abides.

by imarealist on Jan 11, 2010 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

When someone offers to double your pay...

for a lateral gig, at a place you’re comfy with, you listen, no?

I don’t think for one second this was a cynical ploy…

I'm gonna try to swallow the tears and look on the bright side here....

If Richt hadn’t made a run at Kirby and the defense struggles at all next year, there would have been widespread criticism. Now, say Richt goes out and gets Grantham or the moustachoied wonder… he won’t be second guessed about not getting Kirby.

I’m not Lane Kiffin, so I’m not pretending this is some kind of a master plan… and I do wish Kirby had come, but it is a small benefit.

What if, heaven forbid, Dallas keeps winning? Seriously, then what? Can the program afford to wait another month until the Super Bowl is over? Pro Bowl weekend is between the conference championships and the Super Bowl, so it is effectively a bye week. Teams are allowed to talk to prospective coaches during the coach’s bye week.
