Where to tailgate and watch the game from on Campus?
LSU fan here. Never been to Athens. I am pumped. It is going to be great.
I am looking for a place to watch the game after I am done w/ the tailgating. Do yo guys have any suggestions of good sports bars w/ big TVs to watch the game on?
Or, is there a particular place I should look for to tailgate and possibly watch the game there?
I have never been to Athens and am really looking forward to the experience. I have heard great things about the campus and the atmosphere. I had a great time w/ the UGA fans last year in BR and look forward to the same in Athens.
Thanks for any suggestions you guys might have.

If you're going to be in Athens anyway....
Why don’t you just purchase a ticket on the street and watch from INSIDE the stadium?!? Athens is set up like a true college town and there are cool little bars all over town, which is conveniently close to the stadium just in case you try to pick up a ticket with no luck.
If you’re lucky enough to find a monster tailgate with satellite and TVs, folks sometimes stay at the tailgate during the game because they don’t like the hassle of fighting the crowds (It’s hard to fathom, but I actually know some people who do this). If you can’t get into the game, it would be kind of cool to sit outside on a beautiful fall afternoon in Athens and watch the game at a tailgate while hearing the roar of the crowd during the big plays you are watching.
Since a lot of the bars change names so often, I’ll leave the specific suggestions to the knowledgeable experts on this board – I haven’t been to Athens yet this fall and wouldn’t want to mislead.
I’m a UGA student and normally tailgate on milledge at my fraternity house but, I’d say tailgate on north campus (the older part near downtown) but you’ll have to get there early to get a spot.
A great place to watch a game would be Sideways on Broad St just down the road from the arch. It’s a fairly lax bar with several big screens.
Later that night, head to Sideways for power hour (actually 2 hrs) from 9-11 they have pretty strong $1 well drinks, then maybe check out General Beauregard’s on Clayton St if it’s not too crowded. If you’re interested in seeing hammered college girls dance on tables try Bourbon St. on Broad. Or if you’d like a slightly more relaxed atmosphere try city bar on college ave or maybe Boar’s head (hancock I think). Anywhere downtown will be a lot of fun Saturday night but probably pretty crowded.
Have Fun!
As far as tailgating goes,
North Campus is your best bet. This is the oldest (and prettiest, in my opinion) area of campus and is located north of the stadium and south of downtown. Broad St. is the barrier between campus and downtown and is also the beginning of all the bars.
As long as you bring some supplies of your own (read: alcohol), I would venture to say that you will be welcome at most any tailgate on North Campus. As some posters have already stated, if you find a tailgate with people who are staying during the game to watch it on tv, do that. Otherwise, I would head downtown.
Once downtown, the only real sports bar that comes to mind is Wild Wing Cafe on Washington St. This is sure to packed, however, so you would have to get there early. If you are looking for food & drink, there is also a mellow mushroom ample bar room and tvs, but my recommendation would be to opt for Doc Chey’s Noodle House next door to Mellow Mushroom. There is a large projection screen to watch the game, and they have one large room with a very open atmosphere with long, cafeteria style tables where everyone sits together. While a noodle house may not seem like the typical place to watch a game, it’s actually very fun, with fans going back and forth at each other openly due to the style of seating, tables, etc. They have a full bar, so that’s not to worry, and a server to bring you your drinks, so you won’t have to fight for a spot at the bar.
If you are simply looking for a drink and food doesn’t matter, Boar’s Head on Washington Street is a pretty good bet. It has been around in Athens for years, so it is pretty well-known by visiting fans and they generally gather there in fairly large numbers. There is a large patio outside with two bars and tvs, plus a deck above the patio. Downstairs is a Cheers style bar (square), a shuffleboard table, and plenty of tvs to watch the game. Incidentally, the also have people outside who grill hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken breasts, and (only on gamedays) ribs. The grill is cash only, the bar, of course, is not.
The four bars that camiller mentioned (Sideways, General Beauregard’s, Bourbon St. and City Bar) are all fun places, but the crowd you’re going to find there is generally greek college kids with few exceptions…although the crowd does change somewhat on gameday. Also, these four bars are all on the smaller side, so it will be pretty difficult to get a drink. But, by all means, try them out…I don’t want to discourage you.
Some other good bars to try that are at all ends of the spectrum regarding clientele are Allgood Lounge on Clayton St. (this is a larger bar with a full upstairs bar and patio), Nowhere Bar on Lumpkin St., Walker’s Pub on College Ave., Trappeze Bar on Washington St. (huge assortment of beers), or The Pub at Gameday on Clayton St.
Pretty much anywhere you go, you’re sure to have a good time, so I would recommend just wandering around downtown and see what tickles your fancy. Surely, you will find something.
And one other thing…you are not allowed to have an open container (that includes beer bottle, beer can, solo cup with alcohol, or even an already opened bottle of bourbon) on sidewalks in Athens. On campus, you are fine, but once you hit the sidewalk of any street, you can (and likely will) be ticketed. Athens-Clarke County Police love to write citations, so be sure to be careful, because it’s easy to forget.
Honestly y'all...
we have a bad enough problem with people tailgating on North Campus who don’t care about how it looks, how do you think an opponent fan will act? Nothing against Zandor, and he may well be a great caretaker if he does go there, but with all the problems on North Campus, the number of tailgaters packed in there needs to decrease until we can take the proper care of the place.

I know that the trash on North Campus is a problem after games...
and I understand you’re eager to prevent another aftermath like South Carolina from happening, but discouraging a visiting fan who is taking the time to ask advice on how he would best be able to enjoy his first visit to Athens is the wrong avenue to take.
The problem with trash after games is hardly a new issue. It has been a problem for atleast the past six to ten years, possibly longer than that. The difference is that this time, it was the perfect storm. The home opener was a night game against an SEC rival, giving fans longer to tailgate, drink, and generally, accumulate more trash. Larger news outlets got wind of the amount of trash, so it was much more publicized. Given that most of the people who tailgate on North Campus are regulars, I would venture to say that the trash issue is much more of a problem amongst our own fans, as opposed to the visitors.
Additionally, the number of tailgaters on North Campus simply isn’t going to decrease. It’s the area of campus between the bars and the stadium. Not only is it the prettiest part of the campus, it is centrally located to the two largest venues in Athens on gameday. Even if the number of tailgaters there were to decrease, the sheer volume of traffic that passes through North Campus on a gameday would not. UGA would have to literally blockade North Campus in order to minimize this, and that will never happen.
Zandor, I’m sure you will be a very gracious guest (as most LSU fans I’ve met are) and will treat our campus with the respect it deserves. I have always enjoyed the UGA/LSU rivalry that goes on, because it is a different kind of rivalry. We don’t play each other yearly, so it doesn’t take on the mean spirit that many rivalries do. I hope you enjoy your time in Athens, and I encourage you to see North Campus. The tailgating there made a huge impression upon me as a teenager, and I’m sure any first time visitor to Athens would say the same.
Go Dawgs!

Definitely
UGA is definitely my second favorite SEC team. With the cool mascot, a mutual hatred of Auburn and Florida and not playing each other very often, I have always pulled for the dawgs in the east.
It is going to be a fun one.
well said
I stand corrected. Let’s just hope South Carolina was a wake up call to our fans as well as just a “perfect storm” to show the problem.
You guys are great
Thanks for the responses. I am taking notes. We won’t be going into the stadium, just b/c of the associated hassle involved w/ finding tickets that are worth while. I have been to both Tuscaloosa and Auburn before w/o going into the stadium. Both times were absolutely awesome. I expect the same this weekend in Athens.
My main priority is to find a spot to see the game. Food during the game is only for sustenance. Alcohol, not as important. I am just so pumped to experience the tailgating, take in the scenery, and be able to watch the game. Football season is only 13-14 weeks long. I am just trying to pack as much fun into them as I can.
hailtogeorgia – thanks for the warning on the alcohol as well. I have now been warned a couple of times by a few different people. I have a friend who says he was arrested for “public intoxication” on the street. I don’t know the details, but “be careful”…noted.
Thanks
I've never tailgated without going to the game
To me, it seems like stretching behind the startnig line and then going home to watch the race on TV instead of running. Any seat in a college stadium on gameday is better than the best seat in any bar watching the game (my opinion). If money is an issue, then I totally understand as tickets to bigger games can be really pricey. However, I’ve only been to 2 games in my life where tickets were seemingly impossible to find and we still found some (1994 SECCG & 2006 BCSCG – Bama and Ohio St. fans travel like you wouldn’t believe!).
Just curious where you’re coming in from – are you coming all the way from LA?
Hope you enjoy the day-
heading over from Birmingham
Price is the main reason. Just can’t justify dropping almost $100 to sit in the corner of the upper deck. I feel like I’m watching the game on google earth.
I will admit, I used to have your mentality and only did the tailgate, then scurry to a bar to watch the game thing just because we couldn’t find tickets. It turned out to be so much fun, that I thought I would try it again…w/ equal results.
Of course, that isn’t to say that the bar beats good seats at a game. Being in the lower level close to the action is awesome. But for this trip, it will have to be tail gating watching at the bar.
Though I love watching games inside the stadium too...
my recent grad status—and the fact that student tickets are on IDs now—means that I’m probably not going to be in the stadium either (unless I can find scalped tickets at a reasonable price). But you can’t go wrong with North Campus for the day, downtown for the night in Athens. That’s me and my buddy’s plans this weekend. Have a great time, man, you can’t help but do so.

Well that makes sense then
Birmingham isn’t that far away and tickets will be pricey for this one.
I’m not as choosy on where tickets are though. I went to Lexington last weekend (first visit). Our seats were in the very last row of the stadium and it was fine. UGA’s stadium is a tad bigger than Kentucky’s though!
Since money is an issue – you’re going to love Athens. Food and drink is very inexpensive!
come tailgate with us
Zandor,
we will be on North Campus behind Old College and you are welcome to join us. I had a great time with the Tiger fans in Baton Rouge last year.
thanks for the invite
We would love to stop by. What should we look for? Or would you rather send an email to me? If so, send to zandor435@yahoo.com.
If y'all wind up tailgating together . . .
. . . it’d be great if one or both of you could publish a fanpost about it afterward. It’s always nice to get reports of cordial interactions between opposing fans in Bulldog Nation, like this one.
Go 'Dawgs!
Great link to Pitchfork Nation
I went to the game (my first in 3 years) and I had a blast. I made it a point, without going overboard, to welcome every ASU fan I ran into. They all seemed to be enjoying themselves tremendously. I can’t be there for the LSU game (1st wedding anniversary, and all. Talk about competing priorities. The anniversary isn’t technically until Sunday. You’d think that kind of logic – let’s celebrate our anniversary on our actual anniversary – would carry some weight… but it doesn’t. Oh well, I managed to pick our wedding date on Georgia’s bye week last year, so I shouldn’t complain too much. I digress), but I hope all the Tiger faithful enjoy themselves and hope more for a clean, fun, and Georgia-winning football game.
Great Game!
Guys,
thanks for all of the suggestions. Athens was a blast. I think the campus and set up you guys have is really a lot of fun. We hopped around to different bars all day and got to see a lot of the different areas of campus.
Good luck to you guys the rest of the way. That was a great game.
Thanks, Zandor
Best of luck to y’all, as well. I was sorry to be on the short end of that score, but both teams put forth a first-class effort and everyone there got his money’s worth.
Go 'Dawgs!
