The Mark Richt Victory Watch
There are few things in life better than a Saturday night that ends with the opportunity to update the Mark Richt Victory Watch, but, lo and behold, we have ourselves another one.
When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail, so I guess it follows that, if all you have is Ryan Mallett, a game against a top-tier SEC team looks like an L. The defense got it done on third down and Joe Cox had a career night to give Coach Richt his 84th career victory. Coach Richt needs just 117 more wins to tie Vince Dooley for the top spot in the Georgia Bulldogs record book.
The win improves Coach Richt's ledger to 84-23 after 107 games on the Red and Black sideline. Mark Richt remains out in front of his predecessors who lasted that long with the Classic City Canines, as Wally Butts was 78-26-3 and Vince Dooley was 70-32-5 at the same point in their respective careers.
I'll have more on the game Sunday evening, but, for now, let's take a deep breath and relax. Georgia is 2-0 in conference play, and there ain't nothing better than that.
Go 'Dawgs!

It pains me to say it, but...
…good game. You guys made the plays when you had to. Now go beat Tennessee and Florida, please.
Don't mind if we do
It was a great game and the Razorbacks have themselves some playmakers. Good luck the rest of the year.
Go 'Dawgs!

Third Down Defense
Yeah, I saw that Arkansas was 3 for 14 on Third Down, too bad they usually scored on First and Second down. Willy Mo Must Go.

Just a side note on the game...
…in my opinion, what won us the game was great WR play against undermatched corners. AJ Green looked like an NFL player playing against high-school-sized players last night. Not to insult Ark, ‘cause their tall WR’s looked nearly as good against our smaller corners, but it is just one thing that caught me eye and really stood out.
AJ won us that game last night, along with some pretty balls from Cox (that didn’t sound right). And Mallett I was very impressed by him. I was watching the Michigan game when he took over for Henne (or did he start in place of Henne? Can’t remember) and remember seeing a lot of potential. I had forgot how darn tall he is, my god. He has NFL Combine written all over him. I hope, for yall’s sake, he stays for another year because it looks like the sky is the limit.
From a UGA standpoint, I don’t know if the ARK offense was that good and the USC game was a fluke, or if we’re making opponents look much better than they are. As the old saying goes, you aren’t as bad as people think and you aren’t as good as people think, so it is probably a healthy mix of both. And you add in a decent amount of youth on our side and that is only gonna further that point; BUT, and a big BUT, it is getting really frustrating seeing the same mistakes that derailed us all last year, and it seems like they get worse and worse. I’m not complaining about our 2-1 record ‘cause I’ll take it after how the games have been, but I mean…it really, REALLY needs to be addressed. If we didn’t have superior talent than Carolina and Arkansas, we could seriously be 0-3 right now.
Someone responded to my comments after the Oklahoma State loss and said I was a “glass half full” guy, and I really am, but this stuff just can’t be ignored. I said last night and I’ll repeat it, I am going to give the coaching staff all this week to really address the penalties, turnovers and secondary issues and, win or lose next week, if it continues I’m going to sign up as one of the guys that says our coaching staff needs to be looked at.
The defense is on Willy, but the turnovers are on Richt. I can’t say Richt doesn’t get in their ummm, butts, all week during practice because I don’t know, but if he does, well, it ain’t working. Sorry for the mini-rant, but it needs to be addressed.
We won a tough road game...
I do agree with Uga14 that many things need to be addressed-penalties, to’s, & slow address to the ball (looks as if sometimes we just lolly-gag to the ball then we only have 5-7 seconds left to 1-check defense 2-audible if needed & 3-snap the ball). These seem to be mistakes that should be corrected by CMR via discipline! But keep in mind we have a really young group, talented but young-mistakes will happen but those mistakes need to be addressed right away! Also keep in mind when Cox had time to overlook the D-he made some pretty good adjustments & got the ball where it needed to be.
Again these games are played by emotional 18-22 year olds which sort of explains that sometimes players can get UP for games & sometimes they don’t (Please see FSU vs BYU). Other times the breaks are with a team & vice versa-(Please see Southern Cal vs OSU & Southern Cal vs Wash). I’m a firm believer in that the positive “breaks” are manufactured by teams that plan & execute correctly. I also think we better get used to “shootouts” for the rest of this season-the GOOD: it seems our D makes plays when they ultimately have to to win games, the BAD: we cannot keep our D in these positions throughout the rest of the season, & the UGLY: the LSUs & Floridas have much better Ds than what we played against last night & will probably limit our shootout outcomes!
Hey we won a helluva game last night-let’s look forward to minimizing the mistakes & puttin’ a whooping on ASU!!
Sic ’em!!!

Its college though -
and the “young group” was the angle last year. Cox is a senior and should no the system enough to know how to communicate and what the play is. I grant him a few games to get used to the noise and speed, but now its time for him man up in running the offense and not try and prove his arm.
The TOs and penalties have moved beyond the pale at this point. I blame the entire staff. Its too much, too often and for too long.
No angle or excuse for that matter.....
I’m not real sure our problems were “youth” last year… We had a very experienced QB & an experienced, not to mention reliable RB… Last year a lot of our problems had to deal with injuries & of course penalties and to’s… Yes we had an “O” line that needed to gel and a freshman WR that played like an NFL star! I do agree Cox SHOULD know the system, and I think he does-I just feel that the Offense last night took their time getting up to the ball & allowing Cox to look-over the D for possible mismatches!
By no means did I think that Cox tried to “prove his arm.” I think Cox has to keep building his confidence and last night hopefully did that! He even stated after the game to Erin Andrews that these games are “nerve-racking”- in his defense he was probably tongue-tied with her standing next to him!! I just got “chills” thinking about it!!
yes
AJ turned bad passes into catches and Moore had a coming out party. I dont remember ever seeing a UGA receiving corps get fired up like that. If stafford had that kind of catching he would have had a 600 yard game.
i know how you feel.
The arkansas secondary is just as bad as it was last year, if not worse. If our defensive coordinator doesn’t step it up, I would consider firing him.

Announcers comments.....
Did anyone hear Blackledge & the other announcer state that Erin Andrews (oooh did Erin make me crazy in her little school girl glasses! WOW!) anyway she stated that CWM’s comment " all they’re (Arkansas) doing is throwing grenades!" What the hell is that all about?? Those “grenades” were sometimes bombs to wide open receivers!! Not only did Petrino take advantage of the over the middle 5-7 yard passes but also took full advantage of the 15-20 yard deep passes b/t CBs (which Boykin made numerous mistakes) & our Safeties (can someone find a home for Evans?!)… I said this last week-and I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir-but it really gets me that CWM does not adjust his 2-deep zone when offenses start picking us apart!!
On a couple of those scores it looked as if CMR was glaring at Willie (but it was probably me thinking-he needs to go slap Willie in the head!) as if to say man you gotta do something about that!!
What do you make of Arkansas?
I was focused on the Carolina game at espn360, then W Va/Auburn after Mallett wussed out and slid at the 5. Are they the anti-Vols, doomed to be on the wrong end of 40-30 shootouts all season?
I’m starting to think our offensive output in Athens was not a fluke. At the very least, I think we can light up the scoreboard against bad to average defenses. I’ll have a more definitive answer this week, but I’m cautiously optimistic our returning DT’s and new offensive strategy of “scoring” could see us to a big win.
I still don’t know the Dawgs’ ceiling, but Cox’s Week 1 illness seems more and more serious with each passing week. A couple more performances like his last two, and I’m going to assume he was getting organ transplants at the half in Stillwater.

GG-not taking anything away from Arkansas....
but when the D put some pressure on Mallet-he looked very nervous (as you could tell by his high & wide throws) and not very mobile in the pocket (go figure he’s 6’7")…..
When he had all the time in the world (and I timed it!) he made very accurate throws and he looks to throw a very “catchable” ball- i.e. the toss to the diving WR at the endzone-if that ball is thrown by say Stafford or Favre that WR doesn’t catch it!! As was pointed out by Blackledge & the other announcer he gets greedy at times & overlooks some smaller yardage throws (comment was made the RB was wide-open in the flat on an incomplete pass deeper down the field). The RB is a little quick fella that seems to hide behind the O-line & pops out if noone wraps up… Their D well to put it mildly-looked as if the Arkansas state detention center had an early release program for a couple or 4 players (1 player ejected for swinging at 2 of our players as well as shoulder-bumping an official!) The MLB seemed to fit this MO-he looked to be talkin’ trash throughout the game to anyone that would listen (even on the 80 yard run by Samuel-was that a beautiful run or what-he seemed to be getting faster as he left the defensive back-field by 10 no 20 yards, even the CB that thought he had a good angle was left behind!) with or w/o his helmet on (to conclude: if you take/get your helmet (knocked) off & you still run your mouth-well see Oregon’s Lagarrett Blount’s reaction!
DBs looked out of position throughout game not to mention that Cox made some pretty good & accurate throws himself!
I know that to’s & penalties are part of the game but there were 21 points scored in the 1st qtr that by playing smart and disciplined ball would/should not have been on the scoreboard for the Hogs.
As far as your offense goes- I think if Spurrier utilizes his running game (one of the backs needs to step up) more to open up the pass & has Garcia moving around more-y’all can score with the best of them.. your D should keep y’all in most games and may win a couple for ya…. As we saw yesterday Florida is not as over-powering as once believed! (And I’m sure Urban & Tebow wanted to shove Kiffykins words down his throat!) I haven’t paid a lot of attention to Crompton (Vols QB) this year but I don’t believe he is the next Peyton Manning, Tee Martin, or Heath Shuler for that matter! It seemed that the running game kept UT in the game against Florida- I’m sure Norwood & your front six could keep them in check!
On the DAWGS: I think Cox is moving forward as a legit QB! He’s had some physical ailments, some mental mistakes, but all in all he seems to be improving with every game-which is a good thing! I still think the DAWGS could be more explosive with Gray/Murray coming in for some series but I think CMR knows more than I do as far as a starting QB’s rhythm, confidence, etc.
We play to win the game, but it's supposed to be fun too
First off, let me say congratulations to the Georgia Bulldogs. They played a great game, and while it might have not been pretty the whole time, they got it done when it counted, and came away with the ‘W’. Our Dawgs are currently alone atop the SEC East, and the only SEC team at 2-0 in conference play. Great job Dawgs.
Secondly, let’s all give a hearty congratulations to Joe Cox, who was named National Offensive Player of the week by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. That is truly a special accomplishment and we should all be proud of how Joe C has played and carried the Dawgs to 2-0 in SEC play. I think both Bulldawg nation and the rest of the football world are starting to recognize that while Joe might not be the gunslinger that Matthew Stafford was, Joe doesn’t have to just be a game manager. He has enough talent himself and enough weapons around him to run a pretty special offense.
Now for the bad news. We all know the issues. Our defense has looked pedestrian at times. In Athens, we always expect our defense to be prolific, and stop all opponents with 3 and outs all game long, or maybe even create turnovers (huh, there’s a concept!). However, for whatever reason, that hasn’t been the case this year. I think it’s a combination of scheme (maybe) and execution (probably), as well as youth (definitely).
We can all dissect the last game ‘til the cows come home, but I’d like to look at the upcoming game against Arizona State. Now, I don’t think it’s going to be the cakewalk that a lot of my cohorts seem to think it’s going to be. We may very well blow ASU out, but let’s take an objective look at some ASU national team rankings of their stats so far (2-0 vs. Idaho State and Louisiana-Monroe).
ASU statistical team rankings, nationally:
Points per game: #9, 44 ppg
Rushing yards per game: #9, 250.5 ypg
Passing defense per game: #2, 84 ypg
Points allowed per game: #5, 8.5 ppg
Total yards allowed per game: #1, 149.5 ypg
Passing efficiency defense per game: #1, 64.4 passer rating
Turnover Margin: #1, 8 turnovers created, 0 turnovers committed
Now it doesn’t take a British theoretical physicist, known for his contributions to the fields of cosmology and quantum gravity, especially in the context of black holes (Stephen Hawking, ahem) to figure out what the Dawgs are going to need to spend some time working on going forward, especially this week. As you can see above, ASU is #1 nationally in turnover margin, having created 8 turnovers (6 INT, 2 fumbles gained), and have not turned the ball over once offensively. On the other hand, our mighty Dawgs have turned the ball over 9 times (3 INT, 6 fumbles lost) while forcing only 2 turnovers by their opponents (1 INT, 1 fumble). That just won’t cut it.
Our Bulldawgs might be able to get by ASU while losing the turnover battle. But we all know that when the games are against LSU, Tennessee, and Florida, the Dawgs are going to have to win the turnover battle to win those games. That’s just a fact of life (er, football). And I’m sure that the coaching staff will work this week to figure it out. ASU is the last real chance for the Classic City Canines (as Sir Kyle so eloquently calls them) to get a tune up against what many believe is an inferior opponent.
Turnovers come in bunches, and once a team gets a taste of interceptions and fumble recoveries they’re going to get and cause a lot more. Let’s all hope they spend plenty of time this week preparing for the perfect storm we all know as SEC play. Just don’t look too far ahead. Don’t forget about those stats earlier! ASU cannot be overlooked.
I bleed Red and Black, and I have faith that Coach Mark Richt, Coach Martinez, Coach Bobo, and the rest of the coaching staff in Athens are the right men for the job. They do their jobs well, and they do it the right way.
Let’s stay focused and give an MVP performance (as fans) for our Dawgs this Saturday night under the lights. Stay classy this week and let’s welcome those fine west coasters to the greatest college town in the land!
Go Dawgs! Sick ‘em! Woof woof woof woof woof!
Danny
woof woof woof
Faith in Willie?
Why would you have faith in Willie?
When is our last shutout?
When is the last season we averaged less than 20 pts per game given up?
