what i would like to see - early thoughts
As much as I hate to say it, I mean we all want a win with a sizable margin to help our ulcers, but I don't see it happening. Without getting into a full breakdown, what I see as a major problem - on O, D, ST, Coaches, penalties, players, trainers, et all, I would summarize this season as ball control failure.
So, rather than hope for a blow out, I am going to hope for ball control. If I see that, I will take that as strong evidence we can win more than most think this season, even if it is close. I want to see a dominating run game, lowered penalties (especially roughing and PFs), some nice time of possession, flipped fields, and no turnovers.
One of my grievances with Cox is he seems so determined to prove himself. I want to see him move his body and feet, head looking around, aware of the field, put the ball in the stadium as needed (not forcing = ball control), and understand that sometimes gaining 20 yards and a punt to flip the field isn’t a bad thing (flipping the field = ball control).
So, perhaps this Sat rather than complain about the play calling or Coach Martinez or fire “x” or Cox
“ain’t got it” (that was directed at myself) – let’s see if CMR got the team in order to play with determination and physical strength, yet style, class and poise. It may be close in the score, but I am going to be looking hard at turnovers, time of possession, the run game, and penalties. And it would be really nice to see 1st and 10s become 2nd and 5 or 6s.
We have the talent, the program, and, sincerely, our play calling is very hard to judge this year and last with such horrible execution, turnovers, and penalties (I understand these items fall to coaches, but that is not the play unto itself, but the discipline and playmaking coached to the players). I expect a win, probably by 10 points, but a 3 point win or a 20 point win wouldn’t surprise me either way. In conclusion, what I will take to heart is not the score, but the way we work the ball, the clock and the field: ball control.
