Matt Stafford: Can he start Week One for the Lions?
Hello, I am a fan of the Detroit Lions [yeah, yeah, get the jokes out of the way] and on our SB site, Pride of Detroit, we are having a spirited debate regarding who our starting QB should be; Stafford or Culpepper.
I am asking for your feedback as Georgia fans who have watched Stafford for the last three years, whether you think he can succeed/survive as an NFL QB from week one. Let me know what strengths or weaknesses he has that made you think that way.
I have asked the Minnesota fans for their feedback on Daunte Culpepper as well.
For the record, I was very happy with Detroit's selection of Matt Stafford and I believe he appears to have the confidence, intelligence, moxie, and physical abilities to be our QB from day one.
Let me know what you think!

It is certainly a very arguable question,
but yes, I think he can survive/succeed in the NFL (in that order).
From a basic pro-con standpoint, I think he has several factors in his favor. He has played in a pro-style offense for the last three years. He has also been forced to carry a team (though you could argue that Moreno did much of the carrying, as well). He was thrown into the fire very early in his college career and made significant improvements each year. There is no doubt that he can make any throw asked of an NFL quarterback.
However, I still question his ability to truly drop a touch pass over the top of a linebacker and underneath a free safety. Also, the flaw that strikes me the most is the drawback that probably brought him the most criticism within the UGA fan base. He has an uncanny ability to, atleast once per game, make a bonehead decision. This could come from trying to do too much, or, as was the case in two instances that stick out very strongly in my mind, simply make a mistake. I can think of both the Florida game in 2007 and Georgia Tech in 2008 when he lofted up a ball to no one but the opposing cornerback. Both instances resulted in touchdowns…for the other team.
The fact that he was/is prone to the untimely interception, however, does not (in my opinion) mean that he cannot be a day one quarterback. Matt Ryan’s detractors criticized him for this same flaw. If the Detroit coaching staff will start Stafford on day one, they are going to have to allow him to develop slowly, much like the Falcons did with Ryan. Allow Kevin Smith to carry the ball atleast twenty times a game and let Stafford gain his footing slowly, starting the game off by playing some pitch and catch with Johnson, McDonald, and Pettigrew. The last thing that I’ll say regarding his assets is that he knows how to play with a depleted line, which will definitely be helpful playing in Detroit. I think that as long as he has decent protection, he will be able to make a few plays with his feet and command the offense with success. He has the skill players to work with, let’s just see how he handles the spotlight.
In any case, I do think he is a better choice than Culpepper. Stafford is the future, without a doubt.
Thanks htg, Exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.
A couple of small things; Didn’t you guys beat Florida in 2007? I know the 2008 game was ugly but I thought Stafford played well in 2007. Also he did throw five TDs versus GT didn’t he?
We have made some improvements on our offensive line, but the changes are not significant. Our line gave up a lot of sacks mainly due to Kitna and Culpepper. They both hung on to the ball too long, then tried to use their feet to evade the rush. Our other QB, Orlovsky, was sacked at a rate less than half as often as the two veterans. He seemed to pick out his receiver [usually Calvin Johnson] early and released the ball a lot quicker. I am hoping to see the same thing from Stafford.
Thanks again!
My pleasure, and yes, we did beat Florida in '07,
but (without trying to seem like a smart-aleck), the one boneheaded play doesn’t always cost you the game. Sure, he made some good throws in the game against Florida in 2007, and we did win, but lofting up a ball for a cornerback to come and grab out of the air and run, untouched, into the endzone is not something you want to happen when you are playing a game against your biggest rival. Picture that happening against Minnesota, Chicago, or Green Bay…even if you win the game, it makes you wonder when it’s going to come back and bite you, doesn’t it?
On that point, it always left me wondering that question, and when referring to the Georgia Tech game last year, this was an instance where it DID come back and bite us. Sure, there are plenty of other factors that contributed to us losing that game by three points. However, I cannot emphasize enough that, all other touchdown passes aside, if Stafford doesn’t throw a bonehead pick six, the final score has Georgia in the lead.
Honestly, I just found myself asking the question all too often, “Why can’t he put together a complete game against a quality opponent without atleast one major goof?” That being said, I think he’ll win more games for a team than he will lose, and to give him his due, he certainly won a lot of games for Georgia in last minute heroics (Georgia Tech 2006, Alabama 2007, Kentucky 2008, Auburn 2008, just to name a few). He will, though, make the occasional bonehead mistake and (sometimes) lose the game. This may go away as he gets more and more experience, I just rather doubt it.

Staff cannot be worse than Kitna or Daunte
Picture that happening against Minnesota, Chicago, or Green Bay…
Unfortunately, with Kitna and Daunte as our QB last year it was a regular occurrence. Kitna threw two picks for TDs in the last ten minutes of the game against Green Bay last year. Daunte did the same against Tampa Bay and Jacksonville.
Brutal, just brutal.
To me he's most comparable to Eli Manning but witha stronger arm
Stafford reminds me of a stronger armed version of Eli Manning. In other words, he’s not as cerebral as say Matt Ryan but he’s definitely not the love child of the NFL combine (see Kyle Boler). To be a little more specific, I’m not sure he can come in from day one and put up rediculous numbers the way Peyton Manning did his rookie year, but if enough people step up around him (Pettigrew, Jones, and MEGATRON A/K/A Calvin Johnson [sorry had to throw the nickname in there cause its the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while]) then he could put up Rothlesburger type rookie numbers. Further to add to a point hailtogeorgia made above regarding the once per game bone headed play, Stafford’s got a little bit of Brett Farve in him in that he’ll make a total freshman mistake but then follow it up with a throw or two that only Stafford could make). If you youtube the UGA vs. UF game from 2007 you’ll see what’ I’m talking about. Also don’t put to much emphasis into his 08 Florida numbers, he got robbed on at least one INT in which his receiver was literally tackled by a defender which allowed the corner back to catch unopposed and return int the other way for the TD.
I am hoping with some good coaching and experience he cuts down on the mistakes.
But really, I can take the odd mistake from a guy if he makes plays more often than he screws up. He is only twenty-one right now. I am pretty excited about seeing him and Calvin teaming up for the next seven years or so.
Thanks for your feedback cd. One note though, we replaced our Jones with a Smith. One Kevin for another. I like both of those backs, Kevin Jones was slowed considerably by injury. He looked like he was going to be an outstanding NFL back. Kevin Smith is pretty good too. A worthwhile Millen pick for a change.
