2009 N.F.L. Draft Open Comment Thread
This is it . . . the big day. I have heard a college football fan compare the N.F.L. draft to carousel from "Logan’s Run," in which youngsters reach a certain age and are carried up into the sky, never to be seen or heard from again, but I understand some folks actually follow the pros, and certainly we all are interested in the fates of Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Rockwell Moreno, Asher Allen, and their coevals.
Although no one will make a draft pick as prudent as bacon, it’s worth your time and trouble to follow the proceedings on the Worldwide Leader. Please feel free to use this as your N.F.L. draft open comment thread.

In case you hadn't heard . . .
. . . our boy is going No. 1. Here’s hoping he grows up to be Georgia’s T. Boone Pickens with all the coin he’s going to be making.
Go 'Dawgs!
I'm glad he's going number 1
It makes him leaving early not seem like a complete waste, and a bit more understandable. I would have been ticked if Detroit or Seattle passed on him and he dropped i would have been ticked.
That being said i would have rather seen him go to Seattle. Detriot is not a great organization and i feel Matt wanted to go to Detroit simply for the large contract., i could be wrong but i can’t help but be thinking that. Plus the fans are going to want him to be get them 8 wins or more immediately and MS can’t do it alone. Plus people are going to blame his contract for any trouble they have of getting more FA and signing other draft picks, which they need to blame ownership not MS for taking what is offered.

6 years . . .
and $41.7 million guaranteed, with over $70 million possible. Congrats to Stafford, but that kind of money equals pressure. They don’t pay more than any free agent deal to hold a clipboard and sign autographs at fan day.
60 years ago the Detroit Lions selected another Bulldog QB as the no. 1 choice in the 1949 NFL draft. That year, Johnny Rauch signed with the Lions for a whopping $10,000.00 bonus and a new car. When it was discovered the “new” car was not actually new, they gave him an additional $1,000.00. He was traded to the Boston Yanks shortly after (I guess they were embarrassed) for the no. 2 pick in that draft, Doak Walker. Johnny Rauch said that the “Yanks made the worst trade of all times on that trade”!!!
Congrats to Matthew. You’ve come a long ways baby!!!
Mike Mayock says . . .
on NFL Network’s coverage that KRM reminds him of Gayle Sayers and is the toughest runner he’s seen in the draft since Adrian Peterson (I assume the Oklahoma one, not the Georgia Southern one).
Marshall Faulk likes UConn’s Donald Brown and rates Knowshon as “serviceable”. Also says Knowshon’s not a “homerun hitter”. I think this is conclusive proof that he prepared for the draft by eating frozen waffles on his couch while watching Golden Girls reruns.
John Gruden scowls, then says Moreno’s the top back in his mind. Then scowls again.
MoMass
Todd McShay has him going in the second round to Miami. Its the highest i’ve seen him projected so far. Where ever he goes i hope he does well.
I’m also rooting for Brannan Southerland tomorrow. He was a beast for us and he deserves as much as any Bulldog to have a successful carreer in the NFL.

Gotta love ESPN
Stafford goes #1 with a record setting contract and all they can talk about is how a 16 game starter from USC is more prepared to play in the NFL.
I can’t believe I’m gonna say this but for once I’m glad Kiper is on the stage. Everybody else had already anointed Sanchez.
Behold, this year's College Gameday Sign:
"Joe Cox -- He circumcises ANGELS!"
Clearly, Sanchez is this year's Brady Quinn
Wherever he goes, the image we have of him is of him sitting in his home scowling while feeling he’s been robbed of what he was entitled to receive.
Go 'Dawgs!
And there he goes . . .
I mean, seriously. Mark Sanchez sits in a room in Irvine, Calif., because he can’t be bothered to come across the country to his new home town for the biggest day of his life, and the cameras show him slouching and frowning, then, when he gets the call, he has to put on his jacket while he’s on the phone and he never bothers to wear a tie. His dad or somebody has to reach up and straighten his collar for him on live television.
Meanwhile, Curry showed up in a three-piece suit, wept openly, hugged every member of his immediate family, and got to chat with Erin Andrews.
First impressions are lasting impressions, and any neutral observer has to say he hopes Curry goes on to have a great career and Sanchez winds up sitting on the bench and sulking while someone with a better work ethic starts in his stead. What a goober.
Go 'Dawgs!
Congratulations!
I’m stoked that Stafford went number 1. I found out on ESPN late last night and I couldn’t help but feel really proud that a Dawg was the first player drafted in the 09 Draft.
It goes without saying that this will help TREMENDOUSLY in recruiting. Although it remains to be seen how Stafford will perform in the NFL, you can’t deny that $41.7 million isn’t some incentive for HS recruits to see UGA as a training ground for the NFL (even though under CMR we’ve always produced great NFL prospects).
I’m also in agreement with Southern Dawg about Matthew’s decision to leave early. Him going numero uno takes away the sting a bit (for me anyway).
What’s the deal with this bogus GMC Sierra Fan Poll about who will have a better Pro Career? I bet the poll is taking place in Bristol, CT…
The poll is bogus
It’s like asking a nationwide audience in November 1946, “Which newly-elected freshman Congressman will have the better political career, John F. Kennedy or Richard M. Nixon?” Who could possibly presume to know that then? Heck, reasonable historians disagree now over their respective levels of achievement now that they’re dead; guessing at the start would have been utterly useless.
Go 'Dawgs!
I'm taking it that...
…you took Nixon, in the over/under, Kyle…
Gratulations to the Dawgs for having the first pick, and more grats to the SEC for having three of the top six…

KNOWSHON!
Wow I really don’t like the Broncos but dangit I’m glad he went #12! Looks like we had the best QB/RB tandem in the NCAA considering they were the first taken at their respective positions.
Since Cutler’s gone, I guess I can root for Champ Bailey and Knowshon. As a Falcons fan this hurts a bit but I’ll get over it. Can’t wait to see who ATL takes at #24. I’d like to see a LB like a Laurenitis or English…maybe in round 2 we could pick up MoMass? He’d look stellar in a Falcon uniform IMO.
Congrats to Knowshon, whom we can all agree WAS and IS a DGD.
What's not to like about the Broncos?
Terrell Davis and Olandis Gary played for Denver, so it’s clearly a place where a Georgia tailback can thrive.
I generally hate to see Bulldogs squandered on the black hole that is Falcons football, but, if there’s even the slightest chance of seeing D.J. Shockley throw to MoMass, I’m for it.
Good for Stafford and good for Moreno, but, man, seeing our two biggest stars taken in the top twelve only serves to underscore the fact that what Steve Spurrier said about Georgia (“I guess something just happens to them at Georgia”) has some truth to it.
When you look at the colleges that have produced the most current N.F.L. players, the list of the top ten or twelve consists of teams that have won national championships in the last 15 years, and Georgia. There is absolutely no reason why the Bulldogs shouldn’t have been perennial national championship contenders year in and year out for the last two decades.
Boy did the 2008 season ever suck. Is the 2009 season here yet?
Go 'Dawgs!
This Georgia/Denver fan..
Is beyond ecstatic. Unreal. Thank God.

I don't get the love for Josh Freeman
What did he do in college that makes him worthy of a 1st round pick? Is it because he’s big? This is why I don’t understand the NFL. Do they not watch the film? It’s like all the criticism that was heaped on Knowshon because he isn’t track star fast. Dude has the ability to turn a 2 yard loss into a 3 yard run. I don’t get it.
http://hobnailboot.wordpress.com/
not really..
We had a M.A.S.H. unit at the position last year.
You bring in a top-line guy in the draft and another couple veterans whom you let compete in camp, and go with the best few of the bunch.

It's not all that confusing...
I figure McDaniel woke up at about 6:15 this morning and finally realized that Kyle Orton was his QB.
The average NFL game has 62.5 offensive plays. That means the featured back will need to run ~32 times and you’ll need two other backs to run 15 times apiece.
Behold, this year's College Gameday Sign:
"Joe Cox -- He circumcises ANGELS!"
Throwing elbows in the paint that is college recruiting?
Georgia coach Mark Richt said, “our system allows these guys to take their talents and do the very same skills that the NFL is going to expect them to do and answers a lot of those questions.”
