G-Day Game Day Open Comment Thread
While you may be bummed out that Bloggerpalooza ’09 was cancelled, and while you may even be watching Georgia’s spring scrimmage on ESPN instead of attending, G-Day is still G-Day and it’s the last Bulldog football you’re going to get between now and Labor Day weekend, so sit back and enjoy it.
No, I won’t be naming a Dawg Sports honorary game captain---even I think that would be going overboard---but I will be attending this afternoon’s exhibition in Sanford Stadium. My thoughts about the contest will be up after a while (maybe after a great while, as the Diamond Dogs are playing a doubleheader today), but, for now, your thoughts about the contest go in the comments below. Think of it as spring practice for fans.
Go ‘Dawgs!

I was going to . . .
do this as a standalone post, but it makes more sense for it to be in the open comment thread, so here goes. Over or under?
a) the broadcast crew will mention Knowshon Moreno and Matthew Stafford a combined 14.9 times, even if neither is actually in attendance.
b) Florida’s Chris Rainey and/or Brandon James will be mentioned 1.9 times in relation to Carlton Thomas.
c) Joe Cox will complete 59.9 percent of his passing attempts.
d) Aaron Murray will toss 0.9 touchdown passes.
e) The defenses will combine for 2.9 interceptions.
f) MaconDawg will consume 5.9 Krispy Kreme doughnuts (hint: to paraphrase Bon Jovi, woooaahhh, I’m halfway there . . .)
g) Herbie and the gang will mention Nick Saban 3.9 times during the broadcast.
h) Herbie and the gang will mention The Masters 0.9 times during the broadcast.
i) Caleb King will average 4.9 yards per carry.
A) is easy
No question… A) is OVER. I put the number at 15 each.
B) The love affair between the Worldwide Leader in Sports and the flagship university of the sunshine state is well documented, so I’d have to go OVER on this one, too.
C) I think the defenses will be likely to get the better of the offenses in this game, and our WR corps is relatively inexperienced, so I’ll have to go UNDER.
D) UNDER – I don’t think he’ll get enough PT to get the TD pass.
E) OVER – I think defenses will dominate this game.
F) OVER – Your name isn’t Phil, is it, MaconDawg?
G) OVER – The ESPN crew won’t be able to resist talking about how Nick Saban spoiled Georgia’s blackout last year, how Nick Saban has created a huge stir at Alabama with such early success, how Nick Saban is now starting to take some of the top recruits from Georgia… that’s 3 right there.
H) OVER – They’ll probably mention in during the intro as they talk about this being a “busy sports weekend” in Georgia
I) This is a tough one… but I’ll have to go UNDER.
Saban Reference # 4
If Sanford Stadium isn’t filled to capacity, there will be a comment to the effect that Saban has the fans so interested that they fill up their stadium for Spring games.
If Sanford Stadium is filled there will be a comparison to Saban and Bama.

If you count the pregame...
… they’ve just mentioned Stafford and Moreno 5 times in the first 5 minutes of the onsite feed during the last part of College Football Live.
Interesting List
a) Just over. about 7-10 for each. The story of the uga game is who will replace them.
b) i’ll take the under. I’m tempted to say over only because they might mention last years spring game.
c) Over. Cause i’m an optimist and i just want him to do well.
d) Under. He’ll have a good game but won’t get as lucky this time. The defense won’t be burned again.
e) Under. Again i’m an optimist and just a little bit of a gambler.
f) OVER . I’m sure you are on 7 already.
g) Under.
h) Over. Its ESPN come on.
i)Under. The D-line is too good.

So we are starting the spring off as usual....
….dropping passes.
I guess Zach Renner is used to blocking footballs away during a punt formation and not catching them.
Carlton Thomas was back catching the punts. I really, really, really, want to see him return one!

Attendance
I think the Attendance is well above the past 2 years. It looks like both sides of the lower level are mostly full (not the endzones, but the sidelines). That would be about 30-40,000… pretty good turnout historically for the G-Day game.
Stafford/Moreno check
At the end of the first quarter, there have been 6 Stafford references and 4 Moreno references.
This is the easiest over bet I’ve ever seen. :-)
Aaron White
I like him, he gets open and can be a big threat, but dude work on those hands! WE NEED YOU!!!!

Anybody know who the guy was who got hurt during the alumni game?
They mentioned it briefly on the telecast, but didn’t say who it was.
Zach Mettenberger
rough start, must be a freshman.

Halftime check
A) 6 Stafford references, 6 Moreno references. Just 3 more for the over…
B) No references to specific Florida players yet. (I’m personally astounded Herbie hasn’t spoken Tebow’s name in a hushed, reverent tone yet.)
C) I don’t know the stats, but it seems like Cox is well below 60%.
D) Murray hasn’t played yet
E) No interceptions yet (!)
F) Everyone knows this over hit before MaconDawg got tailgating good.
G) No Saban references yet (thank God)
H) Over has already hit with a long exchange at the end of the first half.
I) Again, no stats, but I’m betting this is an under right now
Justin Houston looks awesome.
I am excited about this.

The defense has played well...
… but, to be fair, the Wide Receiver corps has stunk it up something fierce.
Good passing by Murray!
I’m going to have to change some of my “positive thoughts” of our recieving corps.

This is probably way to early to say this...
But I don’t think there’s any way Mettenberger ever beats our Murray when their time comes.

It's way too early
Neither one of them really knows the playbook. Murray’s athleticism is definitely shining, but I’d like to see what they do when both know the playbook.

Honestly i think they are dead even right now.
Cause both look good. Other than Zach’s INT i think he’s been good.

Seriously AJ Green catching a punt?
Is this just to go ahead and have him out there when the Red offense gets on the field? Or is CMR really going to put him back there to return punts?

Well, I think this exciting game...
… has ensured that ESPN will never come back to televise a G-Day game.
I mean, really… 6-3? The defense has done well throughout the game, but there were also far too many easy drops by the wide receivers. That’s one of those things that isn’t too fixable between spring ball and fall practice. You can practice catching all you want, but some guys just don’t respond well in game-pressure situations.
I thought the defense would dominate this game, and they have. To see such poor receiver, play, however, is very disturbing. That kind of stuff will cost you a game or two when it counts.
Post-game wrap-up
Well, Carlton Thomas provided excitement at the end, and I was ecstatic when Brad Nessler caused the Stafford/Moreno over to hit during the final seconds of the broadcast. I haven’t seen any stats from the game so far, so I can’t say if all of MaconDawg’s stat overs or unders hit. This is what I have, though:
A) OVER – Nessler mentioned Stafford’s name as the broadcast ended, bringing the total Stafford references to 9, complemented by 6 Moreno references. Why do these overs and unders always hit so close?
B) UNDER – Other than Tim Tebow, Herbie and company actually managed to avoid saying the names of any specific Florida players. (He mentioned Corch Urban Meyers many times, though, along with waxing poetic about how much better their crowd was last year than ours this year.)
C) I don’t know if Cox reached the 60% mark, but his passing numbers improved markedly in the second half
D) UNDER – no TD passes for Murray
E) UNDER – surprisingly, only 1 interception for the combined defenses, and that was on a pass that flew more like a punt by Zach Mettenberger
F) OVER – See previous examples of our poking fun at MaconDawg’s ritual consumption of our most popular Southern breakfast foodstuff.
G) UNDER – I only counted one mention of the Great Satban’s name, thank goodness.
H) OVER – Way, waaay over
I) I would guess that King’s impressive second half performance put him over the 4.9 YPC stat, but I don’t know for sure.
As a Georgia fan it was enjoyable for me
It is a Spring game for crying out loud. I watched a bit of the UT spring game and it wasn’t any more exciting than ours. I think everybody will have something to say about the drops, and they were apparent and egregious. But i did see a lot of positives. So here’s my list of 3 up and 3 down.
down
1. Dropsies. lets just pray this isn’t 2006-2007 again with the drop balls. I say the coaches should pour hot glue on all the receivers hands as punishment tomorrow.
2. Caleb King. He had some decent runs, but didn’t show me what i was looking for today. And a bad dropped ball.
3. Inconsistent O-line. Sometimes they would give good protection, but sometimes they would whittle under the blitz
UP
1. Justin Houston. Savior of the UGA pash rush, thy name is Justin Houston, Great job Today.
2. Quarterbacks. Cox and Logan both looked good, and for the most part looked accurate. The Freshman acted like freshman but still showed they could play on Saturday.
3. Carlton Thomas. Is this really any surprise. His last two runs may have been the product of a somewhat lazy D at the end of a Spring game. Yet he just darts across the field quickly. Had some trouble staying on his feet today, but looked great and was the only one to touch the endzone.
3(b) Aaron White. I can’t not mention him. He was a favorite target of the day for Joe Cox and Zach. He did drop a few but he still battled and made some good catches down field. I like him a lot and i think he’ll help open up the offense for UGA.

My thoughts
Cox will be fine this year. He won’t make All-SEC, he won’t be Joe T
I am not sold on our WR’s not namd Green or Moore
King is a bust
