Martinez demoted to co-coordinator?

Per Official UGA:

University of Georgia linebacker coach John Jancek has been named co-coordinator for the Bulldog defense according to UGA head coach Mark Richt.

"Willie Martinez is our defensive coordinator and as co-coordinator, John has been and will continue to be instrumental in our game planning on the defensive side of the ball," said Richt.

Forgive me for being extremely underwhelmed. Maybe someone who knows better can correct me, but I think the key portion of the above quote is:

" . . . John has been and will continue to be instrumental . . . "

. . . which makes me think this is only a change in title, with actual duties remaining the same. If he has been instrumental, and will be instrumental, what about his position is changing?

Also, the fact that Jancek recently got a good look from USF seems to indicate that this [the title upgrade] is part of the way he was convinced to stay I could be wrong, but it looks suspicious to me.

Thoughts?

I think it's an example of the . . .

“title inflation” going around college football (running game coordinators, etc.). My understanding is that the defensive coaches have always put together the gameplan as a group, and that likely won’t change. But yeah, this allows them to pay him more than a mere “linebackers coach”.

Agreed

There’s no question Willie Martinez was integrally involved in Brian VanGorder’s game-planning before becoming defensive coordinator, so I doubt whether this represents a substantive change.

That said, I don’t like the idea of “co-coordinators”—-when everyone’s in charge, no one’s in charge—-and I don’t know that John Jancek has really earned the promotion. While I fault Coach Martinez for failing to adjust adequately after the loss of Jeff Owens, he is running the same basic scheme that worked well under Coach VanGorder and has worked well more often than not under Coach Martinez.

At linebacker, though, a number of commentators have remarked on the drop-off at the position from the Coach VanGorder era to the Coach Jancek era.

At the end of the day, it comes down to one question: “At what point are the benefits of staff continuity lost to the risks of staff stagnation?”

I don’t think you can really say that linebacker is really a weakness

But that's merely because of Curran,

Everyone else is ok in my opinion, but not that great.

Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.

I'm not criticizing talent, I'm criticizing coaching . . .

. . . and I don’t think the quality of our linebacker play from 2005 to 2008 has been as consistently good as it was from 2001 to 2004.

Think of it like..

Pilot and co-Pilot. The Pilot is really in charge.

Co-coordinators...

Never a good idea.
