Around SBN: Missouri Crashes The Top Line After Kansas Win

Saturday College Football Game Day Open Comment Thread

Just because the Red and Black will not be in action at any point this afternoon or evening doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy one another’s usual collegiality on an autumn Saturday, particular with a lineup before us that includes, but is not limited to, the following:

12:00 noon: Cincinnati Bearcats at Pittsburgh Panthers
12:00 noon: Houston Cougars at East Carolina Pirates
12:00 noon: West Virginia Mountaineers at Rutgers Scarlet Knights
4:00 p.m.: Alabama Crimson Tide v. Florida Gators
8:00 p.m.: Nebraska Cornhuskers v. Texas Longhorns
8:00 p.m.: Clemson Tigers v. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
11:30 p.m.: Wisconsin Badgers at Hawaii Warriors

That slate generates legitimate interest without requiring emotional investment; we care, though not so much that we’ll get too far down if things don’t go our way and yet still enough that, if we like what we see (if, say, certain teams whose names rhyme with Horrida Haters and Borgia Heck Fellow Packets happen to lose), we can get so jacked we’ll go eat a stick of butter.

Feel free to join in the fun, folks. I’m trusting podunkdawg to bring the brownies, tankertoad to bring the pessimism, and a good time to be had by all.

Go ‘Dawgs!

One day . . .

General Peachfuzz will learn that the fact that some bozo holding a microphone asks you a question doesn’t really mean that you have to answer it directly.

And my picks are a) Cincinnati, b) Houston, c) The State University of New Jersey, and d) Wisconsin in the games that I truly have no rooting (or other) interest in.

Elsewhere I’m afraid that ‘Bama won’t be able to stop Tebow on 3rd and 3 any better than the rest of us. That nauseates me, nevertheless I expect it. I still have no confidence in Greg McElroy Parker Wilson.

But for some bad bounces and some plays that have since been clarified to be illegal, Clemson would have beaten Tech in the regular season. I think they outmuscle the Jackets and Kevin Steele gets a little more expensive for whoever his employer is next season.

Finally, I think Texas struggles a little with Carl Pellini’s Nebraska defense (another guy we should look at for our opening, by the way), but eventually wins by enough to make it tp the BCS game but not enough to win Colt McCoy the Heisman.

by MaconDawg on Dec 5, 2009 11:59 AM EST reply actions

That's Brodie Parker McElroy to you, sir!

Interchangeable ’Bama-banged Crimson Tide quarterbacks . . . collect ’em all!

If Kevin Steele shows he can shut down Georgia Tech for 60 minutes (or, if only for 30 minutes, then for the second 30 minutes rather than the first), I have no problem with the employer that bears the burden of paying his salary to be based out of Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall.

My picks

Cincy because I like Skyline chili and it’s natural to root for red & black.

Houston will roll over skippy’s crew.

WVA cause the bloom is off Garden State U.

Clempsun…cause the nats ALWAYS choke!

Texas and Colt run to the Heisman awards.

Bama punches Tebow in the face… And SEC refs respond by awarding game to the Gpooe.

UGA faces Iowa St in Shreveport and no one notices. Willie sighted at Harrahs placing huge bet on the “over”.

What I would like to see....

Would love to see the Turds get beat tonight, but I honestly don’t think Bama has the offense to win.

Clemson beats the Nerds for the second time this year (although this one will actually count).

I really want to see the Bearcats win today, I have adopted them as my surrogate team this year (and as pointed out above they DO wear Red and Black).

I really really hope that Texas loses tonight so TCU gets a shot at the MNC.

by RocketDawg on Dec 5, 2009 12:23 PM EST reply actions

That would be fine with me...

TCU has been my surrogate team since I was 10 and realized their mascot was a purple horned frog… How awesome is that?

Weird

I was under the impression that the Big 10 didn’t allow games this late in the season. I wonder how Wisconsin got the okay for this trip cross country? Is it because the Big Tweleven doesn’t think anyone will stay up to watch? I mean, essentially, they aren’t actually playing a game, since no one will see it, but still…

by blackertai on Dec 5, 2009 1:23 PM EST reply actions

The Big Ten requires conference games to be completed by Thanksgiving

If a Big Ten school wants to schedule a non-conference game after that point, it is free to do so, because teams control their own non-conference schedules. In Wisconsin’s case, they’re taking advantage of the rule that allows teams who play at Hawaii to schedule an extra game to defray the travel expenses (a rule Alabama also availed itself of to play road games against the Rainbow Warriors after the Auburn game during the two years they weren’t eligible for postseason play).

That . . .

. . . or a way of avoiding rust from having their bass-ackwards conference force them into the clubhouse a week or two earlier than every other league in America.

I do know that Mark Richt should not contact the DC’s of Cincinnati or Pitt.

I know the Pitt D is ranked fairly high in red zone defense, but there are shades of Willie Martinez all up in this game.

We've had cause to hate Pitt since well before that, ausdawg85

Being tied by them in 1973 at the start of the Panthers’ glory run, losing to them in 1975, and losing to them again in the Sugar Bowl at the end of the 1976 season all poisoned us against Pitt. The Sugar Bowl at the end of the 1981 season was just the icing on the cake.

Basically, we played them four times during the only decade in which the Panthers didn’t suck, so we’re 0-3-1 against them. Had we played them in any other period, we’d have beaten them handily.

Yes, I include this year.

I’m watching the Cincinnati game, and this is the first time I’ve listened to the McDonough/Millen broadcast team all season (I was listening to Scott call the game last week). I have to say that it’s a shame that Matt Millen will forever be branded as the architect of 0-16, because he’s a good analyst with pretty good football IQ.

A few observations on the day:

1. I will never, never, never again pick a Dave Wannstedt-coached team to win a meaningful game. When you’re up by three touchdowns at home in a snowstorm and you end up losing on a botched extra point, you’re just inept beyond the power of words to describe.

2. My six-year-old rooted for Cincinnati because the logo on the Bearcats’ helmets reminded him of the Chick-fil-A logo.

3. It is possible not to dislike Tim Tebow, since he genuinely seems to be a fine young man. It is not possible not to be sick of Tim Tebow, though.

4. It is not possible not to dislike Riley Cooper.

5. The Gator fans need to quit giving us a hard time about our uniform changes (even though we need to quit changing our uniform). This business of trotting out italicized-F helmets and all-white unis (are they throwback or what?) gives them no room to criticize.

The only reason they weren't on my list

was because they weren’t playing today. If I were to do a full list, it would look like this:
1. Georgia
2. I hate Auburn, therefore whoever’s playing Auburn
3. I hate Florida, therefore whoever’s playing Florida
4. I hate Tech, therefore whoever’s playing Tech.

We could then get into who do you root for if say Florida’s playing Auburn, in which case I’d probably have to root against both teams.

Too late.

Georgia jumped the shark when running out at a neutral site in black helmets and black pants… without telling fans beforehand that a blackout was planned. At that moment, it became just a gimmick instead of an event…. a “happening.”

by vineyarddawg on Dec 5, 2009 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Correct, correct, correct, correct, correct

Jujdog is right . . . start the year in white britches at home and red britches on the road; switch to silver britches when the team earns it. (This team wouldn’t have earned it until after the Georgia Tech game.)

Otherwise, red helmets, silver britches, red jerseys at home, white jerseys on the road.

No variations for at least three or four years to overcome the stain. Bring back the blackout for a big game following a big win (a la Auburn 2007).

By the way . . . the Gators trotted out different helmets for the SEC championship game; Alabama wore what they’ve worn for 100 years. ’Bama won. Maybe blocking, tackling, scheming, and execution matter more than wardrobe changes and sideline rants. Just a thought.

It might impact us . . .

. . . insofar as a Nebraska win could mean two Big 12 teams in the BCS (Nebraska as the Big 12 champs, Texas as an at-large), which could affect which Big 12 team goes to the Independence Bowl.

Otherwise, no, it’s just football, but not football that affects us emotionally.

That photograph is so awesome . . .

. . . that I’m going to go eat a stick of butter!

In all sincerity, it is clear that Tim Tebow is an upstanding young man who is devoted to his faith and I admire the strength of his convictions, particularly since he doesn’t seem to seek out the attention (e.g., he only said he was saving himself for marriage after Clay Travis asked him, rather than advertising his virginity in any holier-than-thou way). I can’t bring myself to dislike him, or even to disrespect him.

I’m just, frankly, sick and damned tired of it. The media adulation. The shouting on the sideline. The 24/7 focus on Tebow Tebow Tebow. It’s just revolting. Herschel never enjoyed this kind of hagiographic treatment in the national news media, yet he was every bit as admirable an individual.

I hope Tim Tebow goes and does great works for the Lord. I’ll admire him for it the same way I admire Danny Wuerrfel (pardon me if I misspelled that, but I’m not going and looking up the correct spellings of Florida quarterbacks’ last names), but I’m just tired of hearing about him.

A few thoughts on the ACC championship game:

1. I know he’s sending in signals, but, whenever Dabo Swinney does that thing where he puts his fists to his forehead, he looks like he’s announcing, “Look at me! I’m the devil!”

2. It is now safe to scratch Kevin Steele’s name off of MaconDawg’s list. He has coached himself out of contention for the Georgia job tonight.

3. I’m pulling for Clemson, of course, but there really isn’t a bad outcome for Bulldog Nation. If Georgia Tech loses, well, a Georgia Tech loss is, by definition, a good thing. If Georgia Tech wins, well, hey: “Bulldogs 30, ACC Champs 24.”

4. It really sucks that the jokers in charge of the Outback Bowl pulled their usual shenanigans and screwed up the bowl order. If they hadn’t pulled that nonsense, a Clemson loss tonight almost certainly would have meant a Georgia-Clemson Chick-fil-A Bowl, which would have been cool beyond measure. Yeah, I know, I’d be worried about C.J. Spiller, too, but honestly . . . wouldn’t renewing the rivalry be worth the risk, and wouldn’t you have to feel at least a little bit good about the Bulldogs’ chances against a team that went 0-3 against South Carolina and Georgia Tech squads against whom we went 2-0? (By “you,” of course, I mean “you, as long as you’re not tankertoad,” because he doesn’t feel good about anything Georgia football-related right now, and I love him for that.)

5. Geaux Tigers! (Wait . . . wrong Tigers . . . I’m rooting for the ones from Death Valley . . . dang it, now I’m confused. . . .)

You have a shut-down defense...

…the opposing QB has thrown 3 picks

…you have nothing to lose

…so you tell your kicker to “directionally kick a squib” and it goes OB.

How is this intelligent? How did this get into so many coaches playbooks? How can you not at least kick the high pooch to be fair caught, or kick it hard on the ground up the middle?

Or better yet, why not just kick the damn ball deep?

Another nail in the coffin of college football….

Texas is completely one dimensional on offense

And McCoy has looked average at best against teams with good defenses. They are going to get absolutely smacked around by Alabama.

Consider this: in any year, you probably could name Texas’ tailback off the top of your head. Try to do that this year.

Think bout it….UT struggled, Cincy struggled, and Fla lost big. That means TCU could move to #2. That also means a “non” BCS team gets in and that shuts up everyone b/c Boise cant bitch then about gettin jewed outta the game because everyone knows TCU> BS.

I think that picture proves our point

Look at that: Nick has both arms raised all the way above his head in symmetrical fashion and his expression is one of intensity and achievement. Smart’s elbows are bent to too great a degree, his thumbs are at inconsistent heights, and his facial expression is boyish by comparison.

I think Saban justifiably was embarrassed by Kirby’s poor form. The double-thumbs-up is a complex football maneuver requiring concentration and proper technique, and Smart lacks full extension. On a football field, that kind of second-rate effort is the kind of thing that gets you beat. Weak.
