Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Martinez, Fabris & Jancek are fired.

According to the Online Athens Herald, Rivals at yahoo and the AJC (which we all know and love), Willie Two thumbs is in fact, not being retained for next season.  Also not being retained are Jon Fabris (defensive ends coach) and John Jancek (linebackers coach also listed as co-dc in the media guide.)

CMR's official statement (from the AJC)

"I cannot express enough my thanks to all three for their contributions to our program," Richt said in a statement. "However, in the final analysis, I'm charged with providing the leadership and direction for the Georgia program and sometimes that means making difficult decisions. This was one of them."

Richt has asked all three to coach through Georgia's bowl game.

Now the next step

Throw the bank at Kirby Smart and bring him back to UGA.

Isn't he already a DC at Alabama?

We would have to throw a lot of money at him to do it, and i doubt he would take a lateral move from an SEC Championship (and National Championship contender) to come to a place he’s familiar with.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t go after him. I’m just saying i doubt he’ll come.

Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win.

At least the other shoe finally dropped.

Waiting for the news to break was getting really old. Everyone knew that CWM’s head was coming, and Fabris’ canning isn’t really a surprise, either, though Jancek’s somewhat is.

It seems like all of these guys are good men, and I wish all three coaches the best of luck and great success at their next jobs.

by vineyarddawg on Dec 2, 2009 4:36 PM EST reply actions

I honestly think Willie would be a great DC in one of the smaller conferences.

Then again, his defense would probably be an excellent fit for the Big Ten as well.

I’m sure all 3 men will land on their feet and I wish them the best of luck.

I know lots of folks want Kirby Smart but I still can’t get over the mustachioed wonder at TCU. Patterson got a contract extensio to 2016 and nothing was mentioned about Bumpas… Interesting…

That is precisely the right attitude, vineyarddawg

Just as our aggravation with the performance of certain players does not justify booing them, neither does our dislike of the results of certain coaches’ efforts warrant thinking ill of them as human beings.

Kudos to Mark Richt for doing what had to be done. He is right . . . it is his job to evaluate the state of the program and the fact is that the defense hasn’t been getting it done, the special teams haven’t been getting it done, and the linebacker corps hasn’t been the same since Brian VanGorder left.

Our thanks and best wishes go with Jon Fabris, his wife Marcy, and their sons Jack and Mike; with John Jancek, his wife Kelly, and their sons Zachary, Brock, Jack, and Brady; and with Willie Martinez, his wife Kim, their daughters Christina and Ashley, and their son William.

I was quite proud of that.....

but it was pure luck. I just happen to look about 12 seconds after it was posted to rivals, so I rapidly checked both athens banner & ajc and when all 3 said it and there was a CMR quote – I knew it was honest & for true.

This is what I do to combat the insanity of the US Military’s contracting efforts, and they are in force this week. Especially on your KC-135’s.

Yup, I was one of those 1000

Just thankful CMR is making the changes! I wish he had made them last season, but, better late than never, I suppose.

it seems, in true Damon and Richt style

the Universtity handled this quietly and professionally. We dont need a 4 hour ESPN special ala Notre Damn to make this annoucement. I am very happy they didnt wait on it though – the timing is perfect.

Don’t expect an annoucement of a new DC until Jan though. maybe even mid Jan.

The only part that disappoints me

is we just fired three people 23 days before Christmas. Rarely do I think it is necessary to fire someone in December, usually January works just as well. Granted, we have asked them to stay on through the Bowl Game in late December/early January and yes this means they can look for opportunities now and all of those things. Just something about terminating people between 1 Dec and 25 Dec just doesn’t feel good.

by podunkdawg on Dec 2, 2009 5:05 PM EST up reply actions

tis the nature of football though. It would be more unfair to "pretend" and not give CWM a farewell bowl

perhaps. I want to think on that somemore. I would rather know then wait though myself.

I know, i just dont like the concept

of firing anyone between Thanksgiving and Christmas unless you really really really really must. And by that I mean they showed up at work with a loaded gun to shoot people kind of thing. In my own little bubble I want it either before Thanksgiving or after Christmas, just don’t ruin Christmas. Of course these guys make enough money that it’s probably not a problem for them and I’m probably just being a little sentimental about Christmas.

by podunkdawg on Dec 2, 2009 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

Unfortunately, that's just the nature of the timing of football season

Hiring and firing happens between the end of the regular season and the end of the bowl season, which means it largely happens between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.

It’s unfortunate, and it’s even sad, but this is the business they’ve chosen, secure in the knowledge that most coaches are hired to be fired.

I like my bubble

where the month between Thanksgiving & Christmas is sacred. It’s for baking goodies and loving your neighbors and thanking the people in uniform – all the people who work 24 hours a day, putting up with all the dumb rotten and down right mean things we do to one another as well as the accidental things – and being extra kind to one another and all manner of warm fuzzy inciting things (hot cocoa, christmas carols and the like.)
I think I’ll bake some more pumpkin bread tonight while I start planning for the Christmas feast I’m throwing at my house this year.

by podunkdawg on Dec 3, 2009 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

True, but in this "brave new college football world"...

… we have to think about things like recruiting. The faster we can make decisions and do as much damage control as possible, the more we’ll know about which recruits will leave and which will stay.

That’s also why they’ll try to get a new DC and replacements for the other coaches as quickly as possible. Of course, If they’re going to go after Bumpas, they’ll have to wait until after TCU plays its bowl game.

Trust me

they want to know NOW, not later. This is the time when coaching staffs turnover and opportunities arise. These coaches will want to start making plans now or putting previously made plans into action.

Most important omission from press releases

“Jon Fabris (defensive ends coach and special teams coordinator)

I hate to celebrate anyone losing their job (especially in our economy etc. etc.), but it’s definitely a weight off one shoulder. The other weight will come off when we see what kind of talent Richt and Evans can bring in in their place.

Per georgiadogs.com

“Defensive coordinator and secondary coach Willie Martinez, defensive co-coordinator and linebacker coach John Jancek, and defensive ends coach Jon Fabris will not return in 2010 according to Richt; however, he indicated that all three have been asked to coach through the bowl game.”

Odd that they don’t list Fabris as ST Coordinator.

Not really

It’s not like he did much to coordinate the special teams anyway.

I was getting quite nervous....

I was told by a buddy of mine that Willie was down in South GA yesterday recruiting….was there a news conference on this?? Were all three there (at the news conference)? I read the article about the turn-over ratio & CMR believes “everything’s correctable.”
I also noticed that many comments were bringing up Bumpas as DC & suggesting Pollack as a DE coach! WOW!!! You think he would give up his own TV show?

No surprise on the other two being let go-whomever comes in as DC will bring his own Assistants…..but Pollack would be a slam-dunk for DAWG-Nation!!!

by Dawgrees on Dec 2, 2009 5:43 PM EST reply actions

I'm all in favor of bringing David Pollack home . . .

. . . and, much like the Doctor’s regeneration from Tom Baker to Peter Davison at the end of “Logopolis,” the moment has been prepared for. (Sorry, both for the megageekitude of the reference and for ending the preceding sentence with a preposition, but I wanted to quote the line accurately.)

All three are great men

and all three are at least good coaches. They will land on their feet, and will have the gratitude of the Dawg Nation.

Let’s hope that we fine men of similar caliber who are also coaches with more talent. God Speed! May we all move on to arrangements that suit our strengths.

by first and thom on Dec 2, 2009 5:47 PM EST reply actions

Kinda bittersweet to me

I know it’s been the popular thing to do, but as someone else said I hate to see anyone lose their job, and I know it was a tough decision for CMR. All three guys seem like really good guys, and I believe Jancek is a good recruiter.

I just wish Willie and crew could’ve turned it around this year and stayed on strong, but it just wasn’t happening. I really hope all of them can find good success somewhere. The SEC has been really tough lately.

I am quite interested to know who we go after and get. Atlanta’s season is looking to go in the gutter, so maybe we can get Van Gorder back (joke…but come on, he pulled a Petrino by going to the NFL, then South Carolina for a month, then NFL). I’m always up for our guy down in Texas. I hear Tubberville would be a good DC in Athens but I don’t know enough about him to say.

I do, however, have a feeling that whoever we get will have a tremendous first year. I think it’ll be the same thing we see when a guy like Charlie Weiss takes over all the talent Ty Willingham left for him at ND and they have a really good year. We have plenty of talent at Georgia, and I think our overall individual talent will be much better next year than it was this year. Sometimes an outside philosophy is all you need to get the ball rolling for 2 or 3 years. I think it’s tough to have continued success as coordinators, because you have to have a balance of running what has always worked and bringing in new, creative ideas.

Anyway, hope all these guys do well somewhere else and this will give us something interesting for the offseason.

Tommy Tuberville has said he'd only accept a head coaching position . . .

. . . and Will Muschamp isn’t just the defensive coordinator, he’s the head coach in waiting. Muschamp couldn’t be pried away from Austin with anything less than an offer to be a head coach, and probably not even then. Kirby Smart may be a long shot, but Tuberville and Muschamp are off the table, so much so that it wouldn’t even be worth the long-distance phone call.

by T Kyle King on Dec 2, 2009 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

True, but there's an image issue to consider

Think back to the basketball coaching search, in which we offered guys we had no chance of getting. It put Mark Fox behind the eight ball from the outset as the obvious third choice. Maybe he can overcome that, but it weakened him straight out of the gate. I want the first guy we call to take the job so Mark Richt can say, “He was my first choice all along.”

Go 'Dawgs!

by T Kyle King on Dec 2, 2009 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

Probably offering is a bad idea, but

I’d say making the phone call to find out if they would be interested might not be out of the realm of possibilities.

by podunkdawg on Dec 2, 2009 10:35 PM EST up reply actions

And somewhere I read that Logan Gray is being moved to wide receiver.

Kudos to Richt and Evans for making the decision(s). I would say that Richt has a busy Christmas season coming up. It seems to me that a DC needs to be in place ASAP so that recruits won’t be left wondering or (shudder) committing elsewhere because of a lack of knowledge about who is coming in. It would seem naming the DC is the first order of business with the bowl game preparation coming in third behind recruting efforts. But then what do I know.

by Jujdog on Dec 2, 2009 7:16 PM EST reply actions

Strange if true about Gray

Guess it truly is Aaron Murray’s year. Pretty excited for him.

Now, what’s the over/under on the number of snaps Richard Samuel plays at RB next year.

I think our new DC will have a new LB to coach…

by UgaBulldog14 on Dec 2, 2009 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

If the over/under on Richard Samuel's snaps at running back is one . . .

. . . take the under. The running back rotation is one of the few areas in which the ’Dawgs demonstrably improved in 2009.

Wish I could remember where I saw that about Gray, but it

was posted yesterday somewhere I think. Post also mentioned that such a move would be vital to landing the top rated QB in Ga since the QB job would be without any perceived frontrunner.

by Jujdog on Dec 2, 2009 7:40 PM EST reply actions

I saw that somewhere, too . . .

. . . but I honestly don’t recall where.

You didn’t just imagine it, though, unless we’re both hallucinating (which isn’t terribly unlikely) and are having the same hallucinations (which I think is highly improbable).

by T Kyle King on Dec 2, 2009 8:19 PM EST up reply actions

I believe it was in the AJC

They had an article about UGA offering a quarterback from Lassiter High School, and he was told that Gray would be moving to wide receiver, which would leave the third spot open for a true freshman.

by SG Standard on Dec 2, 2009 11:07 PM EST up reply actions

Now is the time to go after Dick Bumpas.

I think, now more than ever, that he will be more likely to be swayed by the argument that you can go undefeated and not play for a national championship at TCU, but you can have up to 2 losses and still win the national championship in the SEC.

by vineyarddawg on Dec 2, 2009 10:39 PM EST reply actions

As for me, I think I'd wait a few days to see who contacted UGA

about the job. I would think there would be a lot of trash inquiries, but, who knows, maybe a great coach would contact Mark. I would suspect that football coaches “network” like business people, lawyers, etc. and have discussed such things as “if you ever have an opening, I’d be interested in talking to you.” I really don’t know that we need to jump out there and go seeking people we aren’t sure we can get.

by Jujdog on Dec 3, 2009 8:11 AM EST up reply actions

Well, I meant "now" in the philosophical sense...

… not “now” as in “today.” As in, “Now is the winter of our discontent.” It’s not just right now, but tomorrow, and the next day… and the next day…

by vineyarddawg on Dec 3, 2009 9:13 AM EST up reply actions

Albeit inarticulate on my part, my point was that I'm not sure we should be "going after"

anyone in particular without some strong indication on his (gosh, I hope I can use the masculine pronoun when referring to a potential football defensive coordinator without offending the universe) part that he (there, I’ve done it again) would come. Hopefully, discreet inquiries by someone not directly connected with UGA could get that info and pass it along to Richt. It was very embarrassing when we sought out replacements for Dooley who flat turned us down, causing us to turn to Ray. While we believe the UGA job is a great one, I, at the risk of the wrath of those who read this, doubt that all great coaches in the country would agree with that evaluation.

by Jujdog on Dec 3, 2009 10:13 AM EST up reply actions

As a girl, I find your use of the masculine pronoun

appropriate. I don’t doubt there is a woman around who could be our DC (shoot, I’d take the job myself), but 1) I find nazi-style feminism distasteful at best, 2) 99.9% of all qualified candidates are, to the best of my knowledge and belief, male, and finally 3) there are much more important things to worry about than whether or not someone includes all genders in their comments.
