Around SBN: Dana White: Carlos Condit Accepts Rematch With Nick Diaz

I don't want to portray this as anything other than a passing comment made to me by a fellow Georgia fan, but I have heard Romeo Crennel's name mentioned as a possibility for the vacant defensive coordinator spot in Athens.

Once again, I have no basis for repeating that as anything other than 100 per cent rumor, but Coach Crennel appears to be available and, while he is no spring chicken, he has been a defensive coordinator at the next level, where he coached under Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick.

It may be completely unfounded speculation---in fact, that would be the way to bet---but it ain't the worst idea I've ever heard.

I just dunno about this one....

There’s this, which is good,

Before becoming the head coach of the Browns, Crennel won three Super Bowls in four seasons as the defensive coordinator of the New England Patriots. Crennel has participated in six Super Bowls winning five of them during his coaching career.

But then there’s….

After one season as a graduate assistant with Western Kentucky (1970), Crennel served as the defensive line coach for three seasons (1971–1974). He then became an assistant for defensive coordinator Bill Parcells and head coach Steve Sloan at Texas Tech for three seasons (1975–1977). Crennel finished his collegiate career with two seasons as the defensive ends coach for Mississippi (1978–1979) and one season as the defensive line coach for Georgia Tech (1980).

and this:

Crennel went 6-10 and 4-12 in his first two seasons with the Browns, finishing last or tied for last in the AFC North and missing the playoffs each year. The Browns finished the 2007 season with a 10-6 record, just falling short of making the playoffs. Crennel’s success in the 2007 season earned him a two-year contract extension in January 2008.2 On December 29, 2008, following a disappointing 4-12 season, Crennel was fired by the Browns.

and finally this:

Crennel had hip replacement surgery in early 2009 and decided to sit-out the 2009 football season while recuperating. 4

Just not sure he 1) wants to keep coaching or 2) would be the great DC we need or 3) would be willing to go from NFL HC to SEC DC? Does seem like a pretty harsh demotion.

he meets a lot of my criteria, but i am not sure he is motivated

and he is way out of shape. DC needs to be able to get out on the practice field.

That's not going to happen

You don’t go from winning Super Bowls as DC to a college DC. Especially given what Super Bowl winning DCs are worth on the open market.

I just don’t see there as being any way.

Rumors rampant, but . . .

don’t you think that this search is already really close if not a done deal? It is hard for me to believe that Richt made the move he made without having something close, if not definite in the works. I mean, really, what good can it do the program for others in the search for a DC to be interviewing and hiring__see FSU, e.g. I thought Curren’s quote about the importance of the next coordinator on his decision whether to stay another year to be somewhat “prophetic.” It would seem that recruits would want to know ASAP. Just my opinion.

Not bad

Crennel would be a good hire. Who knows if that’s something he’d be interested in, but, other NFL guys have made the move to college. Heck, ol’ Buck Belue said he “heard” one of the Packers assistants was interested in the linebackers coach position at UGA. Who says our rumors have to be free of head-scratching?

But, back to the point: if Crennel isn’t finding any job openings he likes in the NFL, returning to college might be something he’d be open to. I’ve pondered a lot lately on whether Richt will pursue someone from the NFL, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he was somewhere on the list of potentials.
