O.K., I'll ask "THE" question.

When is the announcement of Willie's firing or demotion coming?  Many posts on this site assured us that his demise was a "done deal," even if the defense showed improvement over the final three regular season games.  Notre Dame dropped her bomb, and FSU apparently dropped its bomb on Bobby, albeit just a little napalm__retire or come back with fewer responsibilities, particularly with respect to coaching staff decisions.  Is that deafening silence I hear from the Classic City?

THE Question?

No, Jujdog, we won’t marry you.

Well… I mean… I won’t. I’ll let podunkdawg speak for herself. :-)

Seriously, though… I would guess sometime in the next week.

How did I get dragged into this???????

I haven’t even admitted to being available on here I don’t think……..

More important question

Since Bowden is retiring, will FSU ask CMR to take their HC job, and if so, is he likely to accept it?

by podunkdawg on Nov 30, 2009 10:24 PM EST reply actions

Jimbo Fisher has already been designated coach-in-waiting

And will take over those duties nominally.

It would be interesting if we face them in a bowl game, however. It could happen.

by The ArchDawg on Nov 30, 2009 10:35 PM EST up reply actions

No and no

They locked in Jimbo Fisher in order to ensure continuity. They wouldn’t have done that if they’d thought there was the slightest chance of luring Mark Richt back to Tallahassee.

As the “head coach in waiting,” Coach Fisher is so assuredly Bobby Bowden’s replacement that there won’t even need to be a press conference to announce his “hiring”; since they owe him big bucks if he isn’t Coach Bowden’s successor, it’d require a press conference to announce that Jimbo wasn’t the guy.

Go 'Dawgs!

Thanks guys!!!

I feel much better knowing they won’t try to steal entice our beloved CMR to leave us

by podunkdawg on Nov 30, 2009 10:50 PM EST up reply actions

Well since Mickey Andrews is retiring.....

I wonder if CMR could send Willie to FSU as a “kind” gesture or at least as a Christmas gag gift!

I don't care about Martinez leaving

I care about winning more games and playing better defense next year. I encourage everyone to focus on the result and not just call for blood. Richt’s our coach – let him make the call.

I certainly think Martinez should go, but I’m a moron. I want a strong head coach – and I want that coach to be Mark Richt. Having a fanbase that knows it can call for a coordinator’s head and get it is a dangerous thing, and I don’t want to weaken the coach’s position in that way.

Make clear that the fans demand better, and make sure Richt knows that responsibility rests with him. If we don’t trust him to make this call, we don’t trust him to be our coach, right?

Dear first and thom,

Having “focused on the result”, I like many fans, are calling for change, not “blood.” If Richt does not know by now that “fans demand better” and that “responsibility rests with him”, I don’t know how he can be convinced of that. Whether Richt stays or goes is up to him, Georgia will survive, and who knows, might be better off if he left. “Silence” is not making this or any call.

by Jujdog on Dec 1, 2009 11:47 AM EST up reply actions

I hear you, Jujdog

But I still disagree. Let’s focus on better defense. If we’re right about Martinez being the problem then (1) either Richt is loyal to friends over the program or (2) Richt is blind to the problem.

What if Martinez ain’t the problem? What if we get a new DC but there’s no marked improvement? Won’t the excuse be that we’re breaking in a new guy, a new scheme?

The process of how this happens means almost as much as the result – and maybe more in the long run. We’ve got a dang fine coach. Let’s let him do his job. I know what I would do, but I ain’t the head coach at UGA.

of two minds on the question

1. you’d like to lock up a guy before the bowl, that way you get extra time in the system. That might not be feasible if:
2.you’re going after someone who’s playing in a BCS bowl. If that’s the case, then you might start the footsie now, and play out the string with Martinez until the bowl season is done (and, yes, I’m thinking that a run will be made for Kirby…especially if there is some “coach-in-waiting” clause. The latter is unlikely since Richt is young and has unfinished business. Moreso on Kirby’s end, such a move would be lateral for Smart, and, if he plays his cards right, he would be a “hot coordinator” in line for a HC gig in a year or so in any event).

First and thom, I thought that the call was on for Martinez's firing

toward the end of the 2008 season, and that this year (2009) was the year that results were to improve. How many more years are we going to adopt a wait and see attitude? The truth is that the record will be MUCH BETTER next year because the schedule is MUCH EASIER.

by Jujdog on Dec 1, 2009 3:56 PM EST reply actions

I agree with you on the poor play of the defense

…and I ain’t saying that we wait and see. I certainly am not here to say that I’ll be happy to have Martinez back next year. But I think I disagree with you about what we’re supposed to do. If Richt needs to fire Martinez but won’t do it, we’ve got a bigger problem than defense. This is about Richt, not Martinez.

On coordinators, the buck should stop with Richt. When we call for Willie’s head on a platter, we give Richt an out. I don’t care about a new coordinator now: fresh blood means nothing. All I want is better defense. I don’t care if that’s with or without Willie Martinez.

by first and thom on Dec 1, 2009 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

We all agree that we want better defense.....

therefore we HAVE to send Willie packing!! Willie has pretty much proved over the last couple of seasons that his inability to adjust his defense to the opposing offenses has directly led to losses!
We do need NEW BLOOD!! We have way too much talent on the field to get beat day in & day out with the same old scheme! When we allow the Cromptons, Garcias, & Newtons of the mediocre football world to tear us a new one-something has to change! That change should consist of a new scheme/schemes and a new personnel of coordinators to teach those new changes to our talented defense!!
Where’s Ears (Tuberville) when you need him?! I believe his contract states that as long as he doesn’t take a HC job Auburn still has to pay him!! What a deal-we could hire him at good $$$ for DC & Auburn would still have to pay him big $$$$$ (at least through 2013)!! Man talking about sticking it to the Plainsmen!!!

Well, I guess I got my answer.

Our own beloved Willie Martinez was awarded the Legends Nike Game Ball as NATIONAL defensive coordinator of the week for the team’s efforts against GT. Talk about winning the battle and losing the war__for UGA, that is. I’m starting to drink__heavily and often.

this cant be possible. i am in an alternate universe this year.

The same people awarded Bama's McElwain Nat'l Offensive Coordinator this week.

For his team’s great play, Jim McElwain is awarded the "Legends Nike Game Ball" for the National Offensive Coordinator of the Week.

I believe I’d take their awards with a whole salt lick.

I have no words

The D-Line played great and RJ had a game to redeem last year’s debacle, but the two pillars to UGA’s defense on Saturday are named Caleb King and Washaun Ealey. Shout out to the O-line as well.

And, to be fair, Bebe Thomas gets an honorable mention. But Willie?
