A case against CWM
Crunching a few numbers for fun, I discovered the following in 11 games thus far:
Our defense gives up just short of 27 points a game. That includes Tenn Tech putting up a doughnut and Vandy putting up 10.
If you take the non Div 1-A school of TT out of the picture, our defense gives up 29 points a game. We have given up over 40 points 3 times this season. We have given up over 30 points 5 times this season - which would be 50% of the time if you exclude the TT game.
If you follow my game day threads, you know I absolutely believe the O and ST throw the D under the bus on a regular basis with big returns and turnovers. But these kind of numbers speak directly to the defense. Especially when you look at games like SC and Ark where our offense was scoring big and fast.
I am sure the stats folks like Kyle can jump in with even more, and I look forward to it.

Martinez has made the case against himself.
Nothing else needs to be added.
The numbers are bad...
… and I ain’t here to defend Martinez. But numbers don’t speak – we have to give them meaning, by putting them in context with other numbers and with qualitative judgments as well. I trust our coaches to look at the right numbers and make the right qualitative judgments.
Other important numbers: turnovers, takeaways, opponent’s average starting field position. And the qualitative numbers are too many to count.
Again – this is no defense of Martinez. But I think the decision to keep or fire him is up to Richt. And we in the mass public don’t control Richt, and we shouldn’t want to if we could. Our influence is over Richt’s boss.
I will repeat what I said earlier: firing Martinez will buy Richt no slack with me if results don’t improve. Richt has never sought to hand responsibility to someone else, and I trust that he is both (1) a proven winner who is the best coach for UGA and (2) a man who will do what it takes to win with honor.
I want UGA to win with class. Whether that happens with or without Martinez, I don’t care.*
*(Okay, my blood pressure cares. The guy drives me crazy, and I think I know more about defense than he does. But I am – thankfully – more than my delusions of smart football and all-to-real hypertension)
